Jens Lehmann is set to extend his comeback from retirement by signing for German side Schalke, according to Stuttgarter Zeitung.

The Bundesliga outfit, who reached the semi-finals of this season’s Champions League, are thought to be looking for cover for 22-year-old Ralf Faehrmann who was signed as a replacement for Bayern Munich bound Manuel Neuer.

Lehmann is understood to be negotiating a one year deal at the Veltins-Arena having spent the last four months of the Premier League season with Arsenal. The former German international was coaxed from retirement by Arsene Wenger in the New Year after injury robbed the French tactician of the services of his four first choice stoppers.

The 41-year-old made a single appearance for the Gunners during his second spell at the club, keeping goal in a 3-1 away win against Blackpool in April. Lehmann had originally quit the Emirates in 2008 and spent two seasons with Stuttgart before hanging up his gloves.
