Match Report: Bolton 0-0 Arsenal

Britain Soccer Premier League

Arsenal finally broke their run of Premier League defeats in 2012, although a 0-0 draw with Bolton Wanderers feels like another loss given the vital points dropped in the quest for a top four finish.

In a remarkably open game both sides had plenty of chances to seal victory, but it was a case of squandered opportunities, which again cost the Gunners dear.

Arsene Wenger’s side started very well. On the 8 minute mark a cross put in by Vermaelen was headed goalwards by Van Persie. The Dutchman’s effort beat Bogdan but was cleared off the line comfortably by Wheater.

A minute later RVP turned provider as he slotted a Bergkamp-esque ball to Ramsey who couldn’t quite find his inner Freddie to finish. It was a tame effort on the slide by the Welshman – his finishing of late has been very poor.

We weren’t playing with a high tempo, but the passing was neat and tidy. More great work from Van Persie teed up Oxlade-Chamberlain, but the youngster fired high and wide. Again, it should have been a goal. As if the Trotters needed it, the captain fired another warning over the bar on 15 minutes.

David Ngog, who once scored past Manuel Almunia at Anfield for Liverpool, had a decent effort at the near post saved by Szczesny. In response Chamberlain weaved his way up the field, created space and fired over. Ngog, almost taking the game to Arsenal on his own, replied again by causing havoc between Koscielny and Mertesacker before squeezing a second effort in quick succession just wide.

It was hard to believe a goal hadn’t been scored. At this point my stream cut out, but Twitter made it very clear that Theo Walcott had been somewhat retarded in front of goal. A missed one-on-one apparently. It didn’t come as a huge surprise.

The new stream came with an East European commentary – surprisingly I preferred it to some of the crap that is usually spouted on Sky. Song and Vermaelen both picked up yellows from Olympic gold medalist Sir Chris Hoy, the Belgian incredibly unlucky after Mark Davies took a massive dive to con the cycle-loving ref. Suddenly in the mood he also cautioned Steinsson after The Ox was cynically scythed down.

At half time it was hard to believe that a goal hadn’t been scored. We were playing pretty well, although that nagging sense that the missed chances could prove costly was familiar of many away days this season.

The Ox continued his impressive performance in the second half making several darting runs before the hour mark. Along with Mikel Arteta, who controlled the midfield with quiet authority, the young winger was our best player. Twice more my stream cut out, twice more I went in search of the dulcet co-commentary tones of Dean Sturridge on Fox Sports.

From what I could tell we were getting frustrated. Bolton weren’t affording us the same space as in the first 45 minutes and the clear-cut chances had dried up. But wait a moment; a cross from Sagna whipped to the near post saw Van Persie clip the woodwork. Seconds later Chamberlain did his best Christopher Wreh impression, only for Bogdan to tip over. RVP then had a header wide from a corner. The momentum was back.

On 68 minutes Thierry Henry entered the fray for Chamberlain. The youngster had been impressive and Wenger critics might have suggested (not for the first time) that Walcott should have been the one to make way.

Bolton started to come strong and enjoyed a string of corners as they chipped away at the Gunners defence. In open play Martin Petrov whipped in a fine ball which forced a brave block from Laurent Koscielny. Throwing caution and elbows to the wind, Owen Coyle sent on Kevin Davies for the last 15 minutes. Again my stream went down!

Another frantic search returned a stuttering Dutch version. I couldn’t see anything. Another frantic search. This time Italian.

As some stupid advert counted down I saw Van Persie channeling the quality of both Ian Wright vs Leeds United circa 1995 and Dennis Bergkamp vs Bayer Leverkusen 2002 (?) with a delightful chip that hit the bar. Walcott then lashed a volley wide. The sublime and the ridiculous.

We were into the last ten minutes. How the fuck had we not scored? Rosicky came on for Ramsey. The game suddenly became stupidly stretched with players on both sides carrying the ball sixty yards through the midfield before playing pathetic passes back to opponents.

Bolton had three great chances to score. Mark Davies skipping through on goal only to be thwarted by terrific goalkeeping by Szczesny. As the ball spilled cleared it was played to Muamba who then shot wide. Heading into the last minute it looked more likely the home side would win it. Davies, who had been a constant thorn in the side all game, fought his way into the area before dispatching a low drive just wide.

After three minutes of injury-time the ref blew for full-time. Despite a poor final ten minutes, the number of squandered chances certainly meant that this was two points dropped rather than one gained.

Another frustrating night, the likes of which we just can’t afford. The gap between us and fourth place is widening by the week. Grim times.

I can’t allow that. as an arsenal fan. if we just allow these kind of periods where we win 0 games in our last 5 or 6 then we are in trouble as a club. something needs to change and somehow arsenal need to win. drawing against 17th place bolton is poor. finishing out of the top 4 when we pay the highest ticket prices is not acceptable.

Anyone who speaks out is branded a plastic supporter and not a true fan………. total bollocks if you ask me as where I sit there are many true diehard gooners who are extremely unhappy at the moment.
On a side note how convenient was it that the true extent of Jacks injury wasn’t disclosed until the transfer window had closed, No doubt the young German kid is all we could afford for back up which in reality he is. Its about time silent fucking Stan started to sort this shit out, if it continues I cannot see Robin staying around and which top class striker are we going to sign as a replacement if we find ourselves out of the ECL? lets hope it doesn’t come to that.

Any manager who have world class players like Fab or RVP would have built a team around them and won something. Not play Fab with Denlison and Diaby or RVP with Theo and Arshavin. We were lucky those two players come once every generation. Sadly, we did not take advantage of what we have.

The only thing I am dreading is that, he start becoming a laughing stock in press conferences and on the touch line, or watch him decline and abused. I hope for old time sake he just leave with diginty as he can’t see anything anymore.

And to add to this. If you play at the top of a midfield three, just behind the lone striker, YOU ARE THE SECOND STRICKER! I can understand all the anger towards theo but all i can’t understand are the excuses for ramsey. You read on blogs in previews how he needs a rest because he’s been tired lately. I say no. Drop him because he’s been poor all season along with theo. Give rosicky the spot he has deserved from the games he has played. If he breaks down he breaks down. Plus play yossi more often. This bullshit about rambo’s work rate, it counts but if you play behind the stricker and you can’t score or create more often then it counts for nothing. Even players in the blue square premiership have work rate and ‘they don’t hide’ that doesn’t make them good enough to play in the hole for AFC. We have played the whole season up to now with the best stricker in the league with very unproductive wingers and zero attacking threat from the man behind RVP.

And yet again, January passed with no new arrivals to strengthen the squad to give us the best possible chance of finishing in the top 4. I’m not saying wenger out, but something has to change. Yet there’s no need to bring anyone in the transfer window… Fuck me it took djibril cisse 12 minutes to score a goal this morning, are you saying we can’t spend a little cash and get a decent back up? Fucking stop this free transfer, final 6 months on their contract shopping and just stop trying to prove you can win something with this philosophy, because you’ve already proved yourself wrong with the last 7 years.

What to even say…I’ll just list positives and negatives. Positives – Sagna was a breath of fresh air. Ox will be an amazing player in the future. Already miles ahead of Theo. Thought the defense was mostly good, although Song was not helping most of the night. We created some good chances, but that leads to the negatives. Ramsey’s and Walcott’s finishing is just abysmal, face it. Those two chances in the first half would be taken by better players. How Wenger takes off Ox instead of Theo just blows my mind. And poor Song, passing, control, defensive awareness….he just had a terrible game. This side is going to have trouble competing for top 4, as much as that hurts to say.

Like I said before, against Chelski he looked like a world-beater, but whereas Henry, Pires, Freddie maintained these standards week in, week out, he only plays well in bursts. Not enough.

I am a big Wengerite – but I just can’t come to grips with him as a tactician most of the time.

Firstly, you really can’t blame too many of the players. Why is Wenger playing exactly those individuals who need rest? Rosicky had a stellar game against Villa. Why not give the labouring Ramsey a fucking rest? (it seems to me as if Wenger is trying to mould him into Fabregas whether Aaron likes it or not). Song was fucking exhausted. And tbh, he never gets a rest either.

Walcott was absolutely abysmal yet again. The guy is, flat out, not a good enough footballer to play for Arsenal. He wants to be a striker – he has zilch composure in front of goal – he is one of the most technically limited players, not just at Arsenal, but in the PL.

You just wonder – why, Arsene, don’t you sub Aaron in the 70th minute rather than 80th, why do you persist with Walcott over empirically better players? Arsene’s faith in him has led to total complaceny on Theo’s part – he doesn’t strive to better himself, he doesn’t seem to be at all self-critical – for me – his attitude is terrible. Even his goal celebration against Villa stunk of arrogance (the game wasn’t even won at that point).

I don’t mean to vent at just one player – but I’m fed up with Theo. If Theo tries to play any games with a new contract, then Arsene needs to be bold and show him the fucking door. Arsene has found so many great talents, but I’m starting to think that his excess of conviction in so many unrealised prospects in recent years is one of the reasons we’re in the situation we now find ourselves.

I’m frustrated with Arsene – I would never want him to leave, I think he’s one of the best managers and innovators in world football – but we’re always coming up short!

Why are we coming short if he was that good? We used the money excuse for him to death. We were suppose to spend this summer 50 millionsn to re-build we ened up making 20 millions.

Arigo Sacci built one of the best team to ever play football, he use to be called in the late 80s the man who plays the football of the future, he had alot of writing that coatchs study and his achievements Arsene can only dream of. What happened to him, he lost it, his second spell at AC was a joke, he was laughed at as he was thinking all wrong and he was right, he can see what others can’t and he is just unsackable.

I personally think the lack of a David Dein character behind the scenes is why we’re coming up short. I know we can call him a big profiteer – whose arsewipe of a son is hellbent on drawing all our player away from the club – but he would always give Arsene a nudge in the transfer market.

I honestly think that, at this club, which is one of the only self-sustaining elite clubs across the entire European continent, there is no more suited a manager. I don’t think many other top class managers would be able to compete with the budget we have. Mourihno would require at least £50m more each summer, Mancini (£200m), even Fergie splurges £30m on unused squad players.

Last summer, there was clearly complete disharmony behind the scenes. It defies common human logic that that transfer spree was the result of carefully planned acquisitions. Benayoun and Park merely make up the numbers for me – yet, you have Arsene complaining in January that his squad is too big to bring in any other players – I personally think Arsene’s hands are being tied somewhere down the line – and the board are using Wenger as cannon fodder – he’s just got too much class to say anything about it.

It is boring to keep the “his hand tied behind his back” excuse, it is gone beyond that. Which part of he is lost it and stuck in the past don’t you get?

I give the Sacci example to show you a manager can be left in the past if he is big headed and stubborn to change and move on with time. Arsene Squad system still 1998, he thinks a football squad should be 14 and the rest from the under 17 team. Arsene plans the sub at the 67th minutes and who is going to change before the game no matter how good or bad you play.

We are so big that fans booing mean nothing to them if people decide not to go to games there are people waiting to take up them seats and as sad as it is will not make a difference as the demand is there. Theo Walcott, how is he a premiership footballer? He never lifts his head when in a dangerous area, once his pace goes he won’t get a side on a Sunday league team.

Don’t understand Wenger’s thinking, we have no creativity coming from midfield, Wilshire suffers a major set back, yet Pizzaro goes to City. Do we not even bother making any inquiries any more?

This is the worst Arsenal team I can remember. I would keep around five players, the rest are not good enough. They are a disgrace to the shirt.

Has to be his last year, I love the man but his tactics, insistence of playing 4-3-3 and lack of any work on the defence mean he can’t stay. I would say the only decent buys in four years have been Arteta and Verm. Gone are the days of Edu struggling to get a game and strikers of Kanu, Wiltord, Reyes, Bergkamp, Suker. Instead we have VP and then nothing. He said in January it would be stupid to drop points because we didn’t have a recognised left back….hmmm that went well.

I’ve lost all hope, I used to enjoy watching Arsenal, even if they didn’t win trophies, but this arsenal team can’t even string a decent move together these days.

We have shit potential like Ramsey who people are willing to give endless chances too. What happens if he fails like Theo Wlacott? What happens if he’s another Denilson. Stop it. This is all too familiar for me. Believeing in a player who has given us no reason to believe in him. He fails to perform match after match. And all I keep heraing is ‘potential’. fuck potential. you’re talking about selling players, right now the transfer window is closed. we have to make do with what we have right now. This season can be salvaged, it requires a drastic change tho, i cant say what but the current set-up is obviously failing.

i agree with you that arshavins time is up, but walcott definately has quality to be used as an impact sub. i’ve always felt that he gives his best performances when defenders are tired and he’s fresh.

On ramsey tho, i think you’re wrong. while i agree that maybe he shouldnt be exposed to as much 1st team football/responsibilities. let’s not forget this is his 1st full season as a starter, and he was rushed into the 1st team with improper preseason planning with regards transfers. Ramsey is composed with the ball and has a eye for a pass, something which with experience he will improve, as well as improving his positional sense and awareness.

The fact remains that it is not the ramsey’s fault that we are poor, he should be a squad player this season, someone to call on when injuries hit. it’s clear that many of the filler players in the squad(a la park) should be shot(or sold), and first team quality players added(i.e. players wenger is willing to use) leaving us with backups like walcott and ramsey to supplement the first team.

Also for me there still lies a doubt in our tactical set-up, too many times have we watched mediocre-to-poor man utd teams beat us(gibson and oshea ffs), clearly this shows with an improved set-up/tactics maybe performances would shift. As well as this perhaps it’s time for arsene to adopt a policy whereby he sets out his team with thought towards the opponent rather than foolishly believe that it is only our own gameplan that matters.

Let’s be honest, for every 1 star that he gets (Henry, Viera, Fabregas), he gets 10 wrong (Squillaci, Park, Chamakh, Brown, Cygan, Dennilson, Jeffers, Bischorff, etc…)

Please, the only reason Ferguson (longest serving manager) is still on the job is because he wins (about 12 league titles, 2 champions league). Ferguson worst season in the last 20years is better than Wengers best in the past 8yrs. TRUTH>

Our lack of quality in movement and creativeness is a worry atm, none of the free flowing movement that we became accustomed to during the golden years. We haven’t been great to watch as a pure football side since then, people say we are as we used to be but we haven’t been for a while.
I remember during the Henry years we really did play better and more attractive football than Barca, look how the have kept improving while we seem to have been systematically dismantled. When sp**rs play better football you know your fucked.
But there is hope, with a few players in key positions which know how to hold on tot the ball and make good passes we CAN still turn it around.
M’Villa, Gotze, Podolski.. All three players we could realistically get, all good with the ball. Podolski can play in the whole, upfront and on the left, and works hard, M’Villa gore and Wiltshire in the middle, with song arteta and Ramsey for rotation and resting, ox on the right Gervinho as back up. I don’t mind our defence, maybe Gibbs is a bit injury prone, but with a better mid we hold the ball more like we used to and won’t give it away so much in retarded positions like theo and Ramsey do every two minutes.
Obviously this would mean winger spending on proper talent and when was the last time we did that in quite a few seasons, and off holding onto vp if we don’t have CL football.
Just wish we, for once, went that extra mile and bought a few stars. We always fell short the last few years as we were one or two off, pls pls lets just do it next year…

It’s only Feb and lots of footy left to be played, but it really doesn’t seem like we are going to get that all elusive 4th place. I hope like hell I’m wrong, but the present squad is simply not good enough. I can understand the Boss not buying as the return of Jack could have been the creative spark plug and catalyst that could unlock games like today. But with Jack pretty much crocked until May and the transfer deadline come and gone, we are pretty much stuck with what we have. We need to go on another 2 month run of games again. The same group of players have done it once so it isn’t impossible and beyond them, but how much would you honestly wager on them pulling a run like that again? A few pence rather than squids if truth be told. Our only hope is that Chelsea and Liverpool seem to be just as inconsistent as we are so points will definitely be dropped by them. Jack’s 2nd stress fracture is bad luck, but I can’t believe the boss didn’t have a back up plan. For this tactical error, our run in the Champions League will most likely come to an end after this season. We all know the after effects of that which will be Bye Bye Robin.

Biggest problem is we are over relliant on youth this league requires most of the players to be 25 and up for the phsyical demands. Hence fab injured so much gibbs jenkinson walcott last season wiltshire this season and many others.
We wont keep robin anymore than Cesc with the current transfer policy you can have a few young players but not your whole midfield. Ramsey is a decent player but hes out on his feet and will get broken down like wiltshire Robin we will kill him also with no decent cover before the seasons over.

When will they effing wake up last season when they knew Cesc and Nasri was going, deals for Goetz and Hazard should have been already done and in place. Lets face it benayoun on loan and Arteta whos doing ok isnt the answer. Average players producing average results just not good enough.

Wow!So much frustration and understandably. IMHO I think arsene is under-utilising players in the squad. For example, Ramsey is getting so much stick now because he’s been asked to be cesc. When we bought Arteta, I thought he’d be the creative guy but what does arsene do? That’s right he drops him alongside Song. This is a player who excelled at Everton by being the creative player. I don’t blame Ramsey. Try moving Arteta forward and putting Ramsey back in his normal role.
As for Walcott, arsene has left it too long to convert him to a central striker and he’s playing from.the wrong side of the week. Theo pre-arsenal used to like to cut in and curl one in. Overall my assessment is that Arsene is a poor technician and his reading of the game is mediocre.

    Warning!

Trading Standards Officials have asked all football fans to be on their guard against a scam being carried out by a certain north London football club. The aim of the scam is to trick supporters out of thousands of pounds by getting them to buy tickets in the mistaken belief that their club is actually trying to win trophies. Having collected the supporters’ money, the club makes no effort to finish higher than fourth in the Premier League and are easily knocked out of cup competitions. The club also makes large amounts of money out of UEFA by consistently entering and then failing in the Champions’ League. The con artists have cleverly worked out that they can make considerable amounts of cash while not actually winning anything, and have ruthlessly exploited this loophole. It’s believed that both scams have been running for more than six years.

It’s thought that a number of people are involved in the scams; however, the ringleader is believed to be a short-sighted Frenchman who is often seen sporting a slightly effeminate bouffant hairstyle. As the head of the gang, he makes the important decisions pertaining to the buying and selling of players, and has managed to set up the club so that it makes massive amounts of money while spending as little as possible. While doing so he has somehow managed to delude tens of thousands of supporters into believing that he is some kind of messiah. It’s known that he personally makes more than seven million pounds a year from the scam. Last summer he sold two of the club’s best players, pocketing tens of millions of pounds for himself and the other members of the gang. And by buying cheap, second-rate replacement players, the fraudsters hoped that the club’s supporters would be fooled. They have made well over 100 million pounds in the last five years alone with this cunning ploy.

The gang is thought to be overseen by a shadowy American figure, who never gives interviews. It’s believed that he also directs other scams in North America and other parts of the world. Despite being extremely wealthy he is known to have an insatiable appetite for money and never spends unless he absolutely has to.

By sucking the club dry, the fraudsters have turned it into a mid-table laughing stock, unable to compete with its free-spending competitors. The club now has no viable future as a competitive outfit, as it refuses to buy quality players or pay the going wage rates for top-class talent.

Supporters are strongly advised not to buy tickets or any merchandise from this club until there is a change in ownership and management.
