Match Report: Sunderland 2-0 Arsenal

Sunderland v Arsenal - FA Cup Fifth Round

Barring a miracle in the Champions League, Arsenal will have to wait until 2013 to win a trophy after Sunderland ruthlessly dumped the Gunners out of the FA Cup with a 2-0 win at the Stadium of Light. A deflected Kieran Richardson effort gave Martin O’Neill’s men the lead before half-time, before an Alex Oxlade Chamberlain own goal compounded Arsene Wenger’s misery with fifteen minutes left on the clock.

Things looked to be going OK for five minutes. We controlled possession in the opening exchanges, knocking the ball around with confidence and showing no sign of a hangover from the rout in the San Siro. After great build up play Van Persie was taken down by a Sunderland man and Arteta lined up the resulting free-kick. His decent effort whipped past the post from 25 yards. After that though it was all down hill.

While Kieran Gibbs had been expected to start at left-back, the England man was nowhere to be seen when the teams stepped out on to the field of play. Francis Coquelin was his replacement, but somewhat typically given our season, he went down after nine minutes clutching his hamstring. Vermaelen was shifted out to the left again and everybody’s favourite French defender Sebastien Squillaci came on to make up a makeshift partnership with Djourou in the middle.

The injury to Coquelin interrupted our early rhythm and nervousness returned to the fore. Sessegnon had a snap shot from outside the box which didn’t trouble Fabianski. Ramsey and Song both hit the turf and gingerly limped back into the action while Djourou and Sagna seemed to repeatedly lose their footing when attempting clearances. We were rattled.

On 27 minutes a break led by Van Persie saw Gervinho, making his first start since returning from the African Cup of Nations, charge through on goal. His first touch controlled the ball, his second teed it up, his third hit a fierce effort which Mignolet parried over. It was an encouraging bright spark during a turgid period of play.

Four minutes later Van Persie drove into the box chasing a Song through ball. The Dutchman was felled by an untidy challenge by John O’Shea and Arsene Wenger immediately called for a penalty. You wouldn’t have been surprised if it had been given, although our captain didn’t make a big fuss about it. Back on the front foot we again controlled possession although clear cut chances were few and far between.

Five minutes before half-time clumsiness by Djourou led to a booking for the Swiss and free-kick to Sunderland on the right corner of the Arsenal box. Despite the ball being cleared by Vermaelen it was returned with venom by Kieran Richardson from the edge of the area and crashed past Fabianski. Replays showed the shot clipped Squillaci on the way, a touch which diverted it goalwards. 1-0 to the hosts.

The second 45 minutes started as the first finished – indecisiveness by Bacary Sagna leading to a foul on McLean and a booking for the Frenchman. Larsson from the edge of the box curled the resulting free-kick just over.

Aaron Ramsey, who appeared to pick up a knock early, was replaced by Tomas Rosicky on 51 minutes and to add to the ridiculousness of our injury crisis sub Squillaci also limped off the field with Theo Walcott coming on. Alex Song became the auxiliary centre-back again. We were all over the shop, indiscipline rife through the ranks. Vermaelen the latest to be handed a caution for a stupid challenge on the touchline.

The pitch wasn’t helping matters. Last week Per Mertesacker rolled his ankle, this week Sunderland’s Bardsley was the victim as the turf continued to give way. The hosts were aggressive in the tackle and closed down with real passion. Having had a week to mull over Thierry Henry’s last gasp winner they appeared in the mood for revenge.

In truth, not much happened for about 20 minutes. It was a scrappy affair, both sides struggling to string passes together, Arsenal more so than the Black Cats. With fifteen minutes to go Vermaelen sent a tepid header goalwards. Certainly not much to shout about. To rub salt into the wounds within a minute we went 2-0 down.

A break by Sunderland saw Sessegnon running directly at the Arsenal defence. Arteta fell over chasing back, the Benin international fed Larsson whose shot hit the post. As the ball rolled across the goal line Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain who had raced back to help defend inadvertently diverted the ball over the line. An own goal. 2-0. Game over. Season over.

In the last ten minutes there should have been a reaction…a show of heart, passion, a sense of responsibility towards the badge and the travelling fans. Instead there was nothing. Nothing at all. We were nothing short of a joke.

Somehow we have to find focus to fight for a top four finish in the final three months of the season. Not even the most fervent gambler would be back us right now.

We all love Wenger but changes need to be done as we are not progressing or improving.1) Get fresh ideas, bring in Dennis Bergkamp & Tony Adams as assistants 2) Sign some quality experienced top drawer international players like Hazzard,Goetze, Christian Erikson,Benzema,Hamsik & Mvillaa.3)Get a specilaised defence coach and pay attention to defensive coaching/set pieces 4)Stop living in our past glories and looking at players like Campbell & Henry for Salvation 4/Become tactically more astute and flexible, we cannot play the same way all the time and against all opposition

The amazing thing is that the other teams chasing 4th place are

Any other Gooners out there feel like they might be being conned? 5th wealthiest team in the world that doesn’t win anything? Aims to finish 4th to qualify for a championship that we have no chance of winning with the squad we have? Who is reaping the profit? Certainly not us fans who have to put up with the same failure at the same time year in, year out. Does Arsene really think that Djouru, Scillachi and Chamakh are good enough to play for us? Who motivates this team to continually under perform, they lack passion and a winning mentality. There needs to be a revolution this summer.

      who should we get?

-The Manager should be doing better than Wenger at a big league(serie a ,la liga, epl, ligue 1) ie Better than 4th place and winning trophies

-He should be available or have a short term contract ,so the Board can hire or pay his clause

-He should be open to the job and they shouldn’t be from the opposition, So leave Fergie,Mourinho, that Bayern Coach,Arry Redknapp.Capelo etc etc out

you’ll find out there almost no candidates , just look Chelsea ,with all the money they’ve got they had to get AVB who’s doing a worse job with bigger resource than Wenger

So with the above requirements ,I made a list of managers who are doing well with their teams

      1. Jose Mourinho : won’t want to come ,plus get high wages so the board can’t pay the release clause + he’ll bring cunts like Pepe and Carvalho with him

2.Pep Guardiola , there is a possibility ,but very little

3.Vicente Del Bosque : very unrealistic

      4.Capello : hates England

5.Joachim Low : said he’ll see out his contract

6.Unai Emery : he is doing the same thing Wenger is doing with Arsenal , Finishing in the top 4 and selling his best players but in an easier league

      7.Arry Redknapp : no thanks

8.Francesco Guidolin(udinese) :he is doing the same thing Wenger is doing with Arsenal , Finishing in the top 4 and selling his best players but in an easier league

9.Lucien Favre(Borussia Mönchengladbach) : great coach ,plays lovely football ,doing great with a small team in Bundesliga,I’d love him at Arsenal just not sure he’ll be better than Wenger

      10.Jurgen Klopp(Borussia Dortmund) . read Lucien Favre

      11.Alex Ferguson : NO

12.Jupp Heynckes : Why leave Bayern , plus his release clause will be expensive

13:Rudi Garcia(Lille) : Maybe he is great or Maybe he is another AVB

14:Any Manager of top 20 National team : Joining Arsenal will be a step down

That about sums up the manager that are better than or the same as Wenger , Most of the are unlikely to join us or not good enough for us. the ones not mentioned are mostly unproven ,so we can’t really be counting on them to be better than Wenger .

I am not an AKB fan(maybe a little bit) , I think they should change some things and start to show a little more ambition ,they should take financial risks like the way they take football risks(eg not replacing Fabregas, relying on walcott) that and some other stuff.

Changing the manager won’t guarantee anything , we might end up like Liverpool having a shit manager and while spending lots of money on average player to suit his style of play . Althoug we are not winning trophies but we have had consistence for the past 7 years which means some tweaking will do us good than firing the manager. Thank you for reading my Essay

Let’s assume it’s all arsene’s fault, selling our best players and not spending money on quality — then getting a new manager, who’d get rid of all the deadwood and make some quality additions, would solve our all problems. But I just don’t see the board sending this new bloke on a shopping spree, spending all the money which arsene has saved in the last couple of years…a thing people who are crying for the sacking of wenger should bear in mind, I suppose. And I would take this point even further and say that he people running this football club would be fucked big time without arsene — which actually doesn’t even speak in favour of him. But the way Arsenal is run at the moment makes Wenger indispensable imao….read into that what you will

Have no idea where we go from here. we lost the battles all over the pitch and when we needed a response in the 2nd half it just didn’t happen.
We had no leadership, no one willing to win the battles, no heart and no idea. Wednesday we were outplayed today we were out muscled. This arsenal squad offers nothing in terms of fight and that’s criminal. All the talk before about we must respond, we owe the fans a response. Just cheap talk from overpaid, overrated prima donas.

Clearly something needs to happen but I fear the will within the club to put things right and to make the sort of changes needed just does not exist.

No one took ownership of the problem. So many players are letting themselves, the manager, the club and the fans down.

Too many injuries are mounting up. Can’t shake up the personnel until the end of season. Must concentrate on 4th now. Thankfully Chelsea’s defense is as disastrous as ours.

Players have to run to offer support. If they don’t move, they are easily marked. If they jog, they are easily tracked. Players have to RUN. If Larson, Cattermole, Gardner and that ilk can run 10 m to press, then any of the midfield three can RUN to provide an easy outlet, or take up space in between the lines to provide a forward option instead of dropping deep to receive a 5-7 yard square ball only to restart the same puzzle from a slightly different position. It’s absolutely agonizing to watch this team play this way for 90 minutes.

Can’t understand why we persist with this 4-3-3 now that Fabregas & Na$ri have left, we have an abundance of players that I would class as a number 10 such as Arshavin, Rosicky, Van Persie and Wenger insists on playing them out of position, Add to that Walcott who clearly wants to play up front being shifted out wide and there is no wonder we look unbalanced. My fear is that Walcott will get fed up playing out on the wing and see out the last year of his contract next season and go to a team that will play him up front regullary and bang in a hat full.
Think it is time we started playing to the strength of our squad and not some pipe dream of how the manager would like us to play.

I’ve said this on here more than once & it’s even more pertinent now we’re out of both Cups – finishing fourth would only paper over the cracks, & make the management think that the path they are taking us down is OK.

An easy explanation for this defeat is that our players are tired and Sunderland’s were fresh. It was much more important to beat them last week than losing this game.

2., Start rumours about big name players to get the season ticket renewals in (notice how Hazard rumours have started again!)

Being out of the Champions League next season is no bad thing – even better if we avoid the Europa Cup but to just sit here and watch this rubbish week after week without any attempt to make a change is destroying a once great legacy.

Put Bouldy in charge for the rest of the season and take stock in the summer. To do anything less risks the sort of summer we had last year where players don’t know there team mates until the close of the transfer window.

As some love to point out, this sort of thing has been happening for a good few years now, there’s no point being shocked or angry. If you were expecting it to happen then why the surprise? It’s starting to resemble the mid 80s now but then in the mid 80s I never thought I’d see the day we’d go through an entire season unbeaten or that we could ever win the league. So our day will come, hopefully the angry mobs have hearts that are still beating in all those years’ time.

Regardless of who’s in charge this isn’t the worst state the club has been in though it feels pretty close to our lowest lows.

A fellow Gooner told me in 1986 that Liverpool and man u looked like they were going to win every league title for the next 50 years…and the time it seemed like a decent prediction…..25 years later there are arguably 3 or 4 clubs who have a better chance of winning the league than Liverpool, who still remain a big club and attract good players despite being also rans almost every season.

Anyway if Wenger’s reign is nearing an end or even if he’s continuing on till 2014…I have always backed The Arsenal to come good and do well and I’ll continue to do so.

The only difference now is that we moved away from Highbury on the premise that we would be able to compete with the biggest & best clubs in world football. Our last year at Highbury, we knocked out Real Madrid & cam within 15 minutes of bearing Barcelona & winning the European Cup. What price for that this/next year.
Just one last point as well – does it make you mad as well about how much slack Liverpool seem to get? They haven’t won anything for 6 years, yet they don’t seem to cop half the flak we do? Let’s hope Cardiff turn them over next Sunday, otherwise all we will hear about is King Kenny & how he has revived their fortunes.

Liverpool were and always will be the darlings of the media and ‘the people of England’ whoever these people are. My take on the move and this premise of being competitive is that it was based on there being only 2 other big teams competing for all the major trophies. I don’t think the club had a plan B in case other forces emerged a la Man City/Chelsea etc. Which if true was extremely short sighted. Of course you can take the cynical view that they were only looking to make money of us fans and sell us a dream and again if that was indeed the case then it’s a pity.

But in all honesty I wish I knew what it was that would fix our club and make us all happy but I don’t and somehow this cure-all of get rid of Wenger, the board and half the squad doesn’t seem like a sensible thing to do regardless of the frustration and anger we all feel. I feel a big change is needed but then I look at Chelsea, a club where the owner is actively involved, a club where the squad gets revamped/improved regularly and where changes are made promptly when things go wrong and they’re hardly in a stellar position at the moment. So I’m a bit on the fence on this one and it’s not out of any loyalty to Wenger or any acceptance of mediocrity. I just hope for the best, whatever it is.

We _must_ buy a creative, technically superb midfielder in the summer. But who will come? Arsenal will have to pay big wages to get someone of the required quality.

Here’s the problem that needs to be fixed:
At the end of Last season, Ramsey was behind 3 players (at least) for the position he’s in now–Cesc, Nasri, Wilshire. This season, after one injury, he’s an automatic starter! I can’t understand why Wenger is persisting with him when he’s consistently, repeatedly shown himself not good enough to carry that burden in this team with the ambitions it has. He may be ready one day, but he’s not ready now.

At best, he’s another squad player being asked to perform regular duty next to other squad players. None of the midfield in front of Song has the quality to be the creative force needed–each player Wenger can name has his limitations, which makes Arsenal a much easier opponent to play than we’ve ever been.

Fourth place with this current squad (accounting or injuries) would actually be a laudable achievement for any manager. I hope we can stay there.

As for Goetze, I’m not bothered by the fact that he hasn’t won anything. Neither has Ramsey, Arteta, Rosicky, et al. Now that Goetze has had a season-ending injury, he’s got Arsenal written all over him, doesn’t he? Wages would be the only problem there. (Let’s assume we achieve 4th this season.)

We simply need a playmaker. Cesc was the man, but he didn’t want to stay. Kaka would be fantastic, and we wouldn’t have to wait for him to mature. Does Goetze have the dynamism and technique to be that player? I haven’t seen enough of him, but some think he does.

To be fair, Gervinho did take a player on in the first few minutes. Remember when he ran past Sunderland’s right back and won a corner? Once the Coq went off, we were awful, but we were controlling the game in the first ten minutes and I actually thought we would win.

Offense and defense are related. With Squillaci and Djourou in the middle the whole team is shitting themselves. No penetrating runs from the back a la Koscielny or accurate long range distribution from Mertesacker. Just Squillourou moving the ball timidly and slowly back and forth and ultimately back to Fab for a long meandering hit.

Plus, the offense just isn’t good enough. Fabregas made everyone look good, Nasri was a good supporter, Wilshere was energetic and positive and I always loved the way Diaby glided past defenders for his usual half an hour per season.

We’re just not good enough. Wenger is too cheap and too loyal to bad players. Remember when great players were discarded as soon as they hit 30? No everyone is getting contract extensions regardless. Ridiculous.

Do you realize the last 2 games he started we actually won? How can a player with better technique and tactical awareness come on and play with so much heart only to be benched the next game? And if he is awful you’ll rather go with Ramsey, wont you? Are you deluded? Wenger out…wholeheartedly, thats what we all shoudl be saying. Guess I’ll get fewer thumbdowns than I got early season, January and last week.

More signings is not the answers to Arsenal’s problems. There’s a lot of quality players in that squad, including obviously a few of those we have out injured at the moment.

What we need is somebody who can install a determination and winning mentality in the squad to ensure that the best is got out of the players we have. We don’t have that any more, and you can’t just buy that. It’s truly sad times at Arsenal football club.

Now we are really paying the price for losing world class players every season and completely failing to replace them. From being one or two players away fom greatness in 2008 we now need a complete overhaul of the current squad.
Wenger has failed Arsenal Football Club by placing faith & loyalty in his players before the club itself. Unfortunately there does not seem to be anybody at the club who has the balls to point this out. Instead we just meander through until February then implode season after season.
I’ve been on of the biggest supporters of le Professor and am grateful for how he has revolutionised our game. However it is now clear that we’ve gone as far as he can take us. It is time for a change and for me, we could do a lot worse than appointing Fabio Capello as manager with Bould, Keown or even the great DB10 assisting him.

I feel so let down by the players/manager/board this season. This team has never been in such a terrible shape. I could deal with not winning titles, because over the last seasons we always played good football and came close. This season we are not winning anything by a mile.

I’ve always been a huge supporter of Wenger, but nowadays I’m not sure anymore. Why on earth does he bring on Walcott when Sunderland are in front and sitting back? His pace is completely useless in that kind of situation and we all know that he has no trickery at all – it’s shocking and not the first tactical mistake this season.
As for transfers, well I’d rather not stir that sh*t up. And as far as injuries go – I just can’t believe it’s bad luck anymore, because you can be unlucky for one, two, maybe three seasons, but anything which goes beyond that isn’t misfortune anymore, it’s inability to cope with it and change something about it.
I think as supporters who invest time/money/love into the club we deserve something more.

i agree with the fact that he needs to sort the team out and get rid of some players and bring some quality in – a point i mentioned earlier, but why dont you tell me what another manager would’ve done different today? or even on weds night besides starting ox (which is easy to say in hindsight)? he doesnt need to be sacked, and more importantly, he doest deserved to be sacked, what he does need is some challenging of his authority – when pat rice leaves, bring in someone like tony adams, someone to tell wenger we need to strengthen; need a board that invests in the club they hold so dear, need stan or usmanov to inject some capital, be more proactive than to just sit there saying “dang” when things go wrong..

all im saying is this, the club is bigger than the manager, whilst the manager is responsible of the clubs performance to an extent, much more happens behind the scenes that we dont know of which can limit or affect his actions, and after a decade+ of damn good service, if wenger needs a year or two more, im willing to give it to him as no one else would’ve kept us in the top 4 all these years during our shift from highbury to emirates – and that too without an investment for new players.

As frustrated as I get, with a cooler head when I think back to the last 7 years, we have had some rotten luck too:- carling cup last year kos and szcz mix up, rvp being sent off at barca, injuries (where do I even start!), penalty decisions this season etc. it’s as if whenever Wenger takes even a bit of a gamble on something, we’re always punished severely and it’s a hard pill to take, there’s only so many contingency plans a manager can have.

Those that want AW out won’t give a shit, but I can’t help feel bad for the guy, even though my hearts been broken more times than I can count over the past few years, I can’t help but feel that when we do click and do come good, we’ll be unstoppable for the following decade.

Yes, he’s the one that put these players together, but which one of you lot did not think at some point that Theo was going to be a great player. Show yourself. Noone. But Arsene, just one thing. I’m with you till I die, whether everyone is calling me a stupid f**king idiot or not, but you’re definitely doing something wrong too. Fix it, because this is not The Arsenal we all love. After the debacle at the end of last season it was clear that our brilliant manager had completely lost the plot. But instead of sacking him and moving on, the Board allowed him another year to continue ruining the team. And he has duly obliged.

The sad and incredible thing is that even after this shower of shit, the Board will probably not get rid of him. And certain arseholes on he website will still blindly back this past-it French idiot.

Thinking Diaby and Wilshire would return from injury and thus take away some of the pressure on Ramsey; hoping Ramsey would rise to the challenge this year the same way Wilshire did last year; hoping VP would stay ft all season; hoping at least one of Walcott, Gervinho, or Arshavin would score the goals we lost with Nasri/Cesc; thinking that finally signing someone tall would make us stronger at the back; thinking Gibbs would be fit for more than two weeks in a row. Of these only one has worked out for him.

A smarter bet would have been for him to gamble on a world-class midfielder and another proven striker who could play wide as well.

Because our defence lets them into the perfect positions to score from! I remember Seaman batting away shots all day long, but they were not allowed anywhere dangerous because Adams and co would fling themselves in the way of the ball if they did. I Watched Vermaelen actually get out of the way of Milan’s 2nd or 3rd goal.

Disappointed again, but I will not join the rabble with all this Wenger Out Stan Out garbage. Yes I will admit that we should have done better in the transfer windows; however, the reason that we did not buy was as Arsene said, what are we going to do with all these fullbacks if we buy and the ones we have come back healthy. This injury crisis is to blame. Perhaps we have weak players who can not learn to tough it out and play through a knock, but I think we have just been extremely unlucky this season and last with injuries. It is absolutely crippling the squad, the chemistry between the players has broken down as no one is getting to play with the same healthy lineup week in and out. I am not ready to want Arsene out, because I look at it like this, What other manager would have been able to deal with all of these injuries? the answer is no manager… I don’t even think other clubs that have suffered injuries (chelsea, ManU) come close to the extent and duration of our injury crisis. AFC will not fire Wenger midseason and I hope he decides to return, but only on the condition that the club give him all the money he “WANTS” not needs, I feel he should have come to some realization that the squad’s depth cannot compete when the injuries are this way and so we should scrap the garbage players on the payroll and build our depth up with top class. Just last week I was excited about the youngsters on the team and was looking forward to them growing in to world beaters, I still feel that way…. I’m just sick of all this negative shit after every loss, with all these injuries it has to be expected, but it seems to never help.

The injuries are down to Arsenal FC, not luck, not gypsies, not lasagne. Arsene built this team, built the training ground, laid the turf, brought the physios in. Injury crisies every fuckong year are down to his choices and his strategy. The buck stops with him unfortunately. The perfect example of Wenger’s player purchases from the past 4 years is Amaury Bischoff. He bought a player who was chronically injured, spent more time in physio than on the pitch and who fucked off as soon as he was well enough to play somewehere else. Why the fuck would he do that? I honestly think he is mental.

Arteta was shocking again today, i like him a lot but wtf has this team done to him, this bullshit about formations is annoying me cos it shouldnt make people fail to give 100%, same shit ever since we started losing warriors like Sol, Keown, Vieira, Ljungberg, Gilberto, Parlour and Ca$hley (dont anyone say he didnt give 100% every game) and we started replacing them with Hleb, Rosicky, Denilson, Chamakh, Clichy, Walcott and i wont include diaby because of Dan Da Cunt Smith ruined him but he was never blessed with desire anyway.

All in All, this season has been a long time coming and we all know it, Keown knows it, Ian Wright knows it, Adams knows it and DB10, TH14, RP7, Lee Dixon and many many others, including JOSE twat Mourinho, that is why the likes of our legends are nowhere near involved at the club in the way some other clubs keep the winning spirit around as long as possible.

For me, we’re playing a brand of football that is too much for some of the players in our team to handle. The 4-2-1-3 formation has suited Arsenal over the past 4 years because it was built on creativity and technical supremacy in the midfield. And you have to say, it worked last season: We beat Barcelona – and for me it was the best technical performance Arsenal have ever produced under AW.

But when players like Rosicky, Arteta, Gervinho – who are all good players in their own right – are harried in the way that Sunderland players harried them today, in my opinion they didnt have the quality to play their way out of trouble like we had last year. I think the argument about leadership is a valid one, but I just think that Arsene has let us deteriorate quality-wise this year. (Maybe he thought Fabregas and Nasri would stay – I really don’t know)

And this goes back to the loss of Fabs, Nasri and Wilshere. The latter unpreventable loss has fucked up our season and Arsene did not move quickly enough to replace the loss of world-class. The likes of Mata, Alvarez, Goetze all eluded us and we’re paying for it.

I can’t understand why Theo was brought on over Arshavin. Did Arsene not learn his lesson from last week that you need to put on a playmaker to unlock this kind of defensive team? And cue Theo who did a remarkable fuck all once again. For me, only Alex Song was able to feed the ball through the gaps. Adding Rosicky into the mix – forced to by circumstance, though, is a pure case of attrition for me, he really does fuck all (the only time I’ve seen him deliver a killer ball was to Arshavin in a match at the emirates 2 years ago against Blackburn when he split their backline open with a outer-righted footed pass, that’s it though) – Why not replace Ramsey with Arshavin? – It’s his most effective and natural position!!

Arsene didn’t buy in January and surprise, surprise, the team is collapsing once again like everybody in the world – except for Arsene Wenger – could see quite plainly. I am now convinced that Arsene acts decidely against public will – maybe the word ‘public’ has too many connotations with the ‘masses’ and the ‘commoners’ for Arsene to take seriously.

I actually don’t care that much about trophies at this juncture – I care for the future of the club which is hanging in the balance

I must admit that watching Wenger switch to 4-4-2 after 45 minutes in Milan and after 53 minutes in Sunderland smacks of desperation. Crucial moments in the season when we need a goal and we switch to a system the players aren’t familiar with! It’s a damning assessment of our (lack of) ability to create chances through the midfield in the 4-3-3.

Furthermore, I cannot for the life of me understand why Walcott was brought in to play central forward in this situation. There was no room behind Sunderland’s back four to run into. I know it’s easier in hindsight, but for me, Arshavin is the man to place in the hole behind RVP in the 4-4-2. It’s his natural position and he played superbly there against Bolton in an earlier Carling Cup tie.

Well, what a week. And strangely familiar.

My biggest concern is the lack of flexibility in the formation/personnel as a match clearly heads tits-up. Sadly, that buck stops with AW. I can´t understand what he was expecting at Sunderland tonight having played there in the league a week ago.

Did he think the pitch was going to be re-laid and rolled like a carpet? Did he expect Sunderland to stand back and watch us play? And at what point in the match did he see Walcott as the answer? A guy with sloppy control who is best on the break, playing on a minefield against a packed defence?

I kind of have the impression that the manager is making a point to the board here (much like Benitez was accused of doing in his final season at Anfield), “Look at the lack of options you´ve left me with…”.

Today´s match was always going to be an attritional affair; we needed battlers (but do we have any?), a gameplan that allowed us to be direct, force Sunderland to make the same mistakes we did in their final third, and instead we got a selection of talented but jaded ball players who rarely looked threatening for the second “big” game in a row. We couldn´t have been any worse going route one to Chamakh with Young and Arshavin running off him for knockdowns and flick-ons (and RVP would´ve had a much-needed rest).

Would sneaking 4th place with the current squad and qualifying for the CL solve more problems than it would create if the board is really refusing to release funds and back the manager financially? Just think about it for a second…

Truly grim. But we´ll be up for the next one, and this bunch of individuals will get another crack at regaining our affection. They better bust a bollock trying.

I’ve tried to be optimistic, but it’s getting hard to do. The quick possession passing game just doesn’t work without the right personnel and we need a new philosophy. Fabregas was a ridiculously talented midfielder who allowed us to play the possession game effectively, but without him we have nobody that dictate a game from midfield and deliver passes that can split open a parked bus. So we just pass back and forth right around the half way point and a lot of the time we misplace easy passes in that area that lead to glorious chances for the opponent.

I remember watching this team at times last year and thinking Cesc stood out like a sore thumb. Even though he wasn’t 100% most of the year you could tell he was the heartbeat of the entire Arsenal philosophy and we just have nobody that can replace him. Hell there isn’t anybody that could be legitimately bought that that could replace Fabregas in our system.

I’m not necessarily saying Wenger has to go, but we really need a change of philosophy. The short passing game will work against some minnows, but otherwise it simply can’t work without at least one world class midfielder. Just think about the goals we’ve scored against top teams, I can’t think of any that were a product of our short passing game unlocking the defense. They pretty much all have come on quick counter attacks when the opposing team is pushing forward.

Although I’m not happy about the teams play or direction I still will never concede defeat to fucking Sp*rs, I will never go into a game against them @ the Emirates expecting to lose.

Piers Moron sums him up nicely. It’s bad enough to have suffered through this season without his pompous, know-it-all inanities thrust upon us.

Pep Guardiola said, “a team’s tactics are its players”….why cant we just accept for once that this team just isnt good enough……eventually it comes down to quality, a winning menatility….this team doesnt have it….its all good to criticize wenger for a billion reasons….he can only make do with what he has available in terms of the squad…in terms of mentality…we have an arrogant mentality whether we like to accept or not..and that stems down from wenger….he believes his style of play should prevail over every other team….sub 67 mins…only practicing with the ball….not scouting tactics of other teams….its pride and arrogance….we need to change that…

“Well,” I thought to myself afterwards, “we’re still in fourth. Tenuously so, but still in fourth.” But it’ll take only one injury–and I needn’t name anyone in particular–and we will be totally and irrevocably fucked.

Sorry I haven’t read all the comments, I got blurry eyes half way down.

I couldn’t understand why AW put Walcott on as the lone striker (albeit with VP behind him) knowing that Sunderland were defending with 5 or 6 players whenever we attacked. So ok, his pace is phenomenal he can run through when the balls played but wait… we played long, high crosses that Crouch would’ve struggled to get on to.

Is it sad that tonight didn’t anger me at all and I sat there with a quiet acceptance from kickoff that we’d fuck it up.

On a side note, I was gutted for Coquelin.

Demoralizing. I usually just read but under these circumstances, I am compelled to commiserate with fellow Gooners. Yet, I can’t help but wonder what will come of it?

It is strange to be wavering between moments of madness, where I both curse Wenger for a stubborn mule and sit in awe at the kind of football infrastructure he has built for the club.

I am equally at a loss to fathom how we can by all appearances be so consistently at the frontier in terms of health facilities, work environment and general investment in player well-being, yet suffer nightmare after nightmare each season in terms of injuries. Actually it is so garish it is now verging on comical, really.

If I try and be practical about it, I am not sure ‘Wenger Out’ will solve anything. The truth is I trust him more than the board, and the current majority owner and these would be the people tasked with choosing his replacement. Funny enough the more I think of it, there seems to be a growing similarity between the soulless incessant plodding of Wal-Mart inspired business practice and the repetitive product on the pitch.

It would be a bit of a leap to point solely at any one source of blame, and blame in general serves little purpose. But I do think there is merit in examining the current product on the pitch and the ‘modus operandi’ enforced from on high.

Something that sticks out in this weeks Arsecast comes from monsieur Auclair’s observation at how alone Wenger seems to be in terms of accountability. It seems he is running everything, and I wonder, it that has to do with a similar kind of cost cutting, or unwillingness to spend on support staff, that we find on the pitch?

Is this down to Wenger refusing help? Or being dedicated to the club and refusing to acknowledge that they expect him to deliver without that help? Or at least to get by with cheaper knock-offs of the kind of re-investment needed to remain a top club…

I am reluctant to say Wenger has lost the plot. When it seems to me he is simply working way too many story lines. Tongue planted in cheek I see the weariness in his face of any other overworked Wal-Mart employee.

I am not an Usmanov proponent but I am of the opinion it is time we vocally question whether present ownership truly understand what it means to run Arsenal FC? This is not just another “entity” on paper that can be assessed by numbers, and at the moment, I believe in the eyes of some crucial figures, we are nothing more than the above.

I think you’ve really captured the mix of emotions most fans are feeling right now. There is a sense of something “wrong” about what is happening from top to bottom with the club right now. We are all quick to lay the blame but how do we really know what goes on behind closed doors?

What is equally as saddening is that even though we started pretty well last night, most of us sat there with an incredible sense of inevitability (judging from the comments). I don’t really feel much anger or frustration this afternoon (was a 4:15am kickoff for me) despite the shocking pitch, questionable officiating and strategic fouling that Sunderland were using, but just a feeling of resignation.

What happened, how did we get here, and where are we going?

Where is the creativity? We lost fabregas and who did we replace him with? Ramsey cannot even play a simple pass without misplacing it at the moment.

RVP barely got involved at Sunderland and Milan and I cannot remember a clear moment where in either games we tried to attack centrally?

No confidence, no leadership, I do not believe there is a lack of commitment but some of these players have no clue whatsoever.

it’s also funny that anyone criticises Wenger gets a thumbs down, whereas blaming Stan is a definite thumbs up!

Wenger’s been responsible for this team for the last 15 years.
Stan’s been the controlling owner for 1 year.

Are f*king kidding me people? Do you still think Wenger has no responsibility for this miserable season?

Blind faith in this man is exactly the reason where we are now. No accountability, no questioning..

Someone needs to bleed for this.

I sense the board is to blame overall, but without any kind of transparency, it’s Wenger who shoulders most of the blame.
Not that he’s completely exempt, he can fuck up with the best of them, but I believe with some of his recent comments, he is not getting enough support or help at all, while these cunts are content to just line their pockets, while Arsene soaks up the abuse.
But being the professional he is, he just tries to do his best.

I would welcome David Dein back and a new number 2, sorry Pat but I want a hard nosed cunt in your role, someone who will challenge Arsene, and give him the bad cop option.

I can’t believe anyone would thumb down a ‘Ramsey out, Sessegnon in’ post. The Sunderland man is a brilliant attacking player & would be of far, far more use than all the pathetic excuses for creativity that we parade at the moment.

    Random thoughts after yesterday:

Saw Mo Farah on arsenal player training with the gooners in arsenal stuff….if he wins gold does that end our trophy drought…..also I hope he hasnt caught the arsenal hex and effed up his ankle/knee/fragile winning mentality which is effected by our training ground

    Ryo scored a good goal

Fabregas, though brilliant, much loved etc and I really did love him doesnt he appear to have some curse…..never could drag us to win something, leaves us f*cked and then goes to Barcelona who look like they’ll not win their league this year either (though Champs league looks nailed on).

BFG brings some calm to the team, yesterday defensively we were clueless, love Djourou on inside gooner on official website may be he should stick to that. Arteta running on empty, rest of midfield not creative enuf without Jack.

Best thing this weekend is hearing Stevenage fans singing about Bale looking like a chimp and then outplaying the spuds for 90plus minutes.

Back to the drawin board chums.

For a moment, let us forget what has happened to our season thus far.

The situation as it stands……we are 4 points ahead of the team in 7th place. Unless we quicky pull our heads out of our holes, we’ll be finishing in 6th or 7th place.

The players we have now are the players we have for the remainder of the season. In the immediate term, perhaps we could bring in additional coaching / motivational staff or something to try to get the best out of this bunch? On paper, I think our current team is strong enough to compete with Liverpool, Newcastle and Chelsea……and definitely capable of doing Sunderland. Attitude, motivation, organisation, passion, belief, tenacity…..these are attributes we are missing and we need to acquire them right now.

I love Arsene, but we all find ourselves in situations where you can no longer see the woods from the trees. He needs help. If he won’t look for it himself then it should be forced upon him for his own (and Arsenal’s) good. Maybe the fans will have to force the message home (not sure how).

On the bright side (if there is one), if the malaise continues and we endure a number of seasons of mediocrity, the financial performance will inevitably suffer and investment will be made. The club’s current financial philosophy is very short-termist. Its a shame the club will have to suffer before anything is done about it.

Keep the faith, we’ll always be The Arsenal.
