Arteta: we need players like Wilshere

Mikel Arteta has tried to play down the level of expectation around Jack Wilshere, but admitted he’s exactly the type of player the team needs.

Asked about his midfield companion’s quality at the pre-Bayern press conference, the Spaniard couldn’t help but wax lyrical about Wilshere who will return to the starting XI tomorrow.

“He has been showing his class but we don’t want to put too much pressure on Jack,” he said. “He has been tremendous for us in the last few months.

“The character he’s shown to get back from a very difficult injury and get back to that level of fitness and quality in such a short space of time is unbelievable.

“He’s got that personality, that character, he’s a big winner and we need players like that here.”

Arteta went on to talk about the importance of starting tomorrow night’s game well, something Arsenal haven’t always done this season.

“In the last few big games we have missed the first 20 to 25 minutes and gave the opposition probably too much respect. We want to face a different scenario and get into the game and show that we want to win it.

“It’s massive because if you do then you have a great chance of winning the big games. We know we have to face them from the off.”

  1. Ooh another one of our players talking about how we need to start games better. They all talk it but they don’t do it, and giving the opposition too much respect?! We turn up to games thinking we can just pass the ball around our back four and win the game, that’s arrogance. Pathetic, I don’t believe a single thing any of our players say because for one or two games they do it and then they think they’re fine they do it again. The amount of times I’ve seen “Wenger holds inquest” this season, they don’t get it AT ALL

    • He was asked if he felt the team needed to start better.

He didn’t call a press conference, jump up on a soapbox and say “I have an announcement!”

Thumb up 102 Thumb down 6

      • Haha I get you but it annoys me when players say obvious stuff like that, and even more when they don’t do it and roll out the stuff after the game that Vermaelen did

Thumb up 15 Thumb down 10

      • What are they supposed to say, we’re taking things for granted, we may try harder if we can be arsed etc. usual stuff, usual build up, every team does it, I just hope that sooner or later they act on what they say. Here’s hoping.

      • Arteta looked very uncomfortable sitting next to the insane ramblings of his manager. If that was me, I’d think he’s lost it. As a consequence he blurted out a load of meaningless old crap – or maybe he’s really that dopey in real life. Hard to say with footballers these days.

      • “He was asked if he felt the team needed to start better”

In that case, that’s a fucking stupid question from the journalist, like most of them are (except for the odd ones like Amy Lawrence etc)

What the fuck is he supposed to say- “no, we shouldn’t start better, I love spurs”?

Thumb up 24 Thumb down 0

    • That’s one thing i’ve always hated about the media over there. Where i am from when a person is asked a question, it’s also included in the story to avoid confusion. So we wouldn’t get headlines like “Arteta slams gunners for being crap”. When he actually says ‘yes we have had slow starts and as you say it hurts but we are trying to approach games better’

Thumb up 11 Thumb down 0

    • You should’ve watched the entire conference. Journalists nowadays are straight-up dumb. Journalism nowadays really has lost its art, especially in sports. They are good at asking obvious, stupid questions. (Or, creating a wrong information from an undisclosed “reliable source.”)

    • You are spot on George. Just the other day Sagna going on about not letting another Bradford happen. It’s pathetic to hear the same things over and over again just to see a lame effort out on the pitch every week.

  2. Give him the armband now.

He’s already the only one with the bollocks to give it out to some of these fuckers who think it’s acceptable to stroll through a game.

Never did TA any harm getting it at a young age (if you ignore the booze problems and the way walls jumped out at him when he took the Cortina for a spin).

Thumb up 42 Thumb down 2

    • the only sam is nelson

he doesn’t just give out to team mates, he’s at it with the ref and opponents like it’s going out of fashion. yes, please, more of that

      *but*

leave the armband with TV, giving it to our best players usually indicates they only have one season left – TH14, Cesc, that other cunt who went where his inner cunt told him to… i don’t think any of us would bear it if Jack were to attract a £50m+ bid because the club would sell him faster than monkeyboy diving after a trailing leg in the penaly area

Thumb up 26 Thumb down 1

      • Hmm, you can see it happening. We talk about WIlshere as a future captain and Dani Alves talks about Wilshere as a player Barcelona should sign in the future.

Wilshere ought to go to Barcelona, kick Alves firmly in the bollocks and then come home.

  3. Give us a good one tomorrow so we can forget about the Blackburn incident.

Thumb up 15 Thumb down 2

  4. It would be lovely if we score the first goal and then hit them on the counter attack all game long. COYG

Thumb up 27 Thumb down 1

    • If we win that’s the only way I can see it happening.. I have to say I’m genuinely worried of a 5+goal thrashing. Their team’s insane!

Thumb up 2 Thumb down 3

  5. Really we need more players like Wiltshire state the bloody obvious and open the wallet for once this is just a joke now

Thumb up 4 Thumb down 23

  6. Wilshere also needs a team who gives fuck week in week out.Need more inspirational players.I mean the vermaelen we saw in his first season was a guy who would always win headers because there was a drive in him what happened later i have no idea? Is it down to the management , i guess it is.

Arseblog we really need you and the other leading Arsenal bloggers at this moment in time more than before. Our fans need perspective and I feel we’re losing this. There is a mist of negativity surrounding our club which I feel is media driven (and may even possibly lead back to some of our rivals) and has been growing over the last few years. It’s been there waiting to take us down but our faith in Wenger has just about overcome it. This year, even though we’re still in hunt for 3rd/4th and in the champs league the disgusting media head-hunt for Wenger is starting to pick up pace because our fans are buying into it. I watch all of games, all of our press conferences, read all articles surrounding us and can categorically state we are not in as dire a predicament as most people are saying we are in. In fact, blind faith in the team is probably the difference between getting a trophy, and not getting one. We haven’t shown blind faith because as soon as a miniscule hint of trouble is faced, our fans are quick to say ‘here we go’.. I hear this attitude in the emirates most times i go. We need perspective and we need to get behind our team when the going gets tough.

As always, please help our fans to stay positive like you usually do and help us to build that siege mentality we used to have. Maybe even a column similiar to F365′s Mediawatch will help; where the propaganda, lies and over-reactions in the media relating to Arsenal are spotted and documented for all our fans to see.

    Coming from a concerned GOONER4LIFE.

    • At this stage, personally, i wouldn’t wan’t anyone to promote any side of it. As long as there’s no name calling everyone should be open to their opinion.

I’ve never called for Arsene to leave, i love that man like a father, but i can’t tell you how many times my mind oscillates from the thoughts of whether it’s time. Enjoy the highs and lows of being a football fan and pray hard st totteringham smiles back quicker this season.

Thumb up 5 Thumb down 0

    • You seem to missing the big white elephant in the corner of the room. Arsenal have played Man U 21 times over the last 9 years. We have won 4, drawn 3 and LOST 14.

Arsenal were beaten 2-8 by Man U last season.

As fans we wanted backs to the wall, revenge, fighting spirit…what did get, we sold one of our best ever strikers to the scum. I am not happy with that, tell me are you…

  10. these players need to SHUT THE FUCK UP! we know you’re shit just put in some determination to win matches.Fuck the PR stunt! !!!”

Thumb up 7 Thumb down 8

  11. The one player who cannot be criticised is Arteta. He is almost always our best performer and plays his heart out week in week out. PR or not he’s earned respect for the way he’s altered his game to fit our system. I’d give Arteta the armband above anyone else.

Thumb up 18 Thumb down 2

    • I critisize him for not earning us a draw on saturday. Fucking side netting?, 6 yards?, good angle?

      Not good enough!

Thumb up 2 Thumb down 9

  12. I’m preparing for our customary woeful first half display in which Gomez will score a hat trick, only for us to come out after the break and play scintillating football with Walcott and giroud braces, only for a customary back pass from bayern’s corner flag to szczesny in the 90th minute from vermaelen going horribly wrong and robben picks it up, dives, gets szczesny sent off an scores the resultant penalty off his arse after a mannone save.

Call me an optimist, but I think we may get a draw tomorrow!

Thumb up 7 Thumb down 8

  13. @thierryhenryshizzle… What planet are you living on, we don’t need arseblog or anyone else to start saying hey look on the bright side Blackburn and Bradford aren’t so bad, winning trophies ain’t so good, the reason the fans are exasperated with Wenger is that he’s not won anything for 8 years and in that time he continually makes the same mistakes showing that he can no longer adapt, he also provides a shield for the failing board by forcing the fans to see it as its either Wengers philosophy or nothing, meaning we can’t demand the board to make signings as Wenger doesn’t choose to spend the money anyway! This is a negative time for arsenal due to the negative circumstances at our club! And I for one think that Wenger is jointly responsible and needs to go! Soon after we need a shake up with the board!

Same planet where in 2008 we were spanking everybody in the league largely thanks to Eduardo who got a horrific injury. Same planet where we were going through against Barcelona at the Nou Camp before Van Persie got shockingly sent off for nothing- where was our chance to be lucky like Chelsea and maybe win a CL???? We busted our guts in those two game and could have gone through. Same planet where we finished 3rd last season.. etc etc.

We went from boring boring Arsenal to an international brand known for producing great football. Look at our stadium. Look at our debts for the stadium.. almost gone. A bit of patience, perspective and respect will go a long way.

Thumb up 13 Thumb down 4

      • And if my ears we’re arseholes I’d have shit on my shoulder, we’ve been getting nearly there for a while, shall we throw obafemi Martin’s goal in there for Birmingham a trophy we should’ve won, when push comes to shove and we need the right leadership it is always lacking from Wenger! I don’t want to get in comparing toich but do you think a Ferguson or mourinho side would’ve thrown away the Eduardo season or the league cup final, it is a fragility that leads back to Wenger and one that hasn’t been addressed still! It’s now grown so that Bradford and Blackburn can exploit it! The simple fact is the manager must be accountable because the longer it goes on the further it damages his legacy! And don’t get it twisted between cash and sponsorship deals our stadiums paid off yet still not worth spending some of the excess cash on an exceptional player of top top quality like I don’t know Andre Santos!

  15. I want my Arsenal back!

I really am feed up of the players or AW saying we need to do better. How about you put that theory into action? Same garbage being played every game and then the same excuse’s afterwards. They clearly know what’s wrong with what they are doing on the pitch so how about bloody putting that into practice for once!

Thumb up 4 Thumb down 5

  16. You do get the feeling that JW would stand tall and tell the opponents to go F* themselves before he allows them to beat him, and has the skill to back it up. The Invincibles all had that confidence.

I do miss the days when Cole had Ronaldo in his pocket, as Neville recently admitted, and Lauren looked like he would murder him if the stadium went dark.

  20. I just hope BM destroy Arsenal and go on to win lift the cl to show him how far he has fallen behind. Even if the gunners get to the qf/sf/f I don’t think they can win it. A dodgy gk is the greatest fear.Add to the error prone defence and an attack that doesn’t want to shoot till they see the whites of the gk’s eye.
Wenger has lost the plot and his predictable style is a gift for opposing teams even for champinship teams. All they have to do is let the gunners have 98% possession and countless shots at goal. Then a swift counter and the gunners are a goal down.
This has happened many time and will happen if he doesn’t go easy on the attack.I expect BM to play negative and play like what MU/Chelsea did and won at ES.That BM will probably go through over two legs is probable.Howeve it is not cast in stone. If the gunners can score first, then it will be interesting.
I still believe the gunners are not good enough to win the cl. It’s better to exit than lose in the final.

  21. Jack the lad (Theo too) has been primetime for us recently & I wouldn’t want anyone else in the world (said with straight face!!) instead of him bossing our midfield.

I’m still numb from saturday but no time to feel sorry for ourselves & if little CFC can beat Barca, surely we’ve got a fighting chance against Bayern – step forward Oli Giroud, Jack runs the middle & we need you to run the line.

  22. I just dont know whats happened to this club. Tomorrow night is one of the greatest nights at the Emirates. Mid-week champions league against a great opponent. Yet the feeling around the press, around arseblog, around the whole club in general feels as if someone has died?

This is not the feeling ive come to know about arsenal. The press can bash us to fucking pieces, but its our job to ensure the Emirates is fucking buzzing tomorrow night. Yes we’ve been shitful lately, but in the majority of the games ive watched on tv this year, i can hear the players talking more than anything else going on in the Emirates.

I would give my left testicle to be there tomorrow night, along with the rest of the fans from a far. Do us proud tomorrow night, we cant make the players perform, but we can certainly fucking help. Lift the lid on the place tomorrow lads so i can hear it all the fucking way from Oz.

We’ve beaten Barce-fucking-lona at the emirates not so long ago….Bayern’s surely easier than that…I don’t even see a messi in there!!!
I hope the emirates is buzzing and theo scores the fastest ever goal in champs league and runs into the net or something!!! And arteta scores a screamer from 40 yards and does a goal celebration where all his hair go crumpled and haywire!!!

  24. Whats interesting is whever we lose a game we suddenly turn on Arsene in a heart beat and want him gone, but it won’t happen. The Wenger haters have been quiet for a few weeks but every defeat brings them out again, frothing at the mouth, baying for the blood of a decent man, with no thoughts of what would follow should he go.

  25. Jason aka yankeegunnerblog.

I admire your passion for Arsenal FC & read a good deal of your blog, but you asked for opinions so here’s mine.

I’ve got my own golf wensite so I feel I know a bit about what people like to see/read online. I think you’ve written WAY TOO MUCH on your homepage & would be better off keeping (homepage) it brief with photos/limited script. Open sections for long-winded essays like that & if people want to read it they will. Also most of what you wrote is old news & shouldn’t be on the homepage either. I’m just being honest & don’t mean to appear critical.

incase you’re wondering I’m English but live stateside, hence the name – cheers
