Betis want Campbell for another year

Real Betis have revealed that they’d like to keep striker Joel Campbell at the club for another 12 months when the current loan arrangement with Arsenal concludes.

According to manager Pepe Mel, he and club president, Miguel Guillén, will travel to London to start negotiations with the Gunners.

“Very soon we’ll travel to London to ask Arsenal to loan for a second year loan for Campbell,” he’s quoted in crlegionarios.com.

The Andalusian club are obviously impressed with the Costa Rican hit man, despite the fact he’s only managed two goals for them since arriving in Seville last summer.

He’s made 17 appearances for Betis this season, and while it’s undoubtedly a learning process for him, his performances do little to suggest he’s ready for the Premier League.

Campbell signed for Arsenal in the summer of 2011 after Dick Law spent 5 months living in Corcovado National Park, and had signed 7 fake Joel Campbells before he got the right one.

We think.

Thanks to @RYO_cleverfish for the heads-up.

  2. He has actually been rated very highly by the Spanish newspapers.
He has a lot of talent, he is fast and strong. His finishing will improve. I think he will break into the Arsenal team in a couple of seasons.

I’ve been watching him quite a lot recently and he’s impressed me. Mainly been used on the wings and is constantly tracking back. His dribbling looks very good, he is fast and will take on a defender. His final ball is not the best but it will get better gradually, and he has started every game since around December.

    • I agree.

I have following his progress closely and trying to watch Betis games as much as I can. The fact that Betis are sitting at the top half of La Liga and he is starting games regularly and they want to keep him, can only be good for two reasons

      1. He is more likely to accumulate international appearances making him eligible for Work Permit
      2. Playing regularly in one of the top European league can only help improve his game

Much better than sitting on the bench or playing for reserves

      • He already qualifies for a work permit. He has started in 75 % of costa rica’s games in the previous year

    • Also been streaming the odd half of a Betis match now and then just to watch Campbell. I do like that he’ll run at people with the ball (something only Jack seems to want to do right now), but hoping that he gets a little more lethal around goal. I hope that’s not something that is innate.

  7. Nobody else sensing a bit of the Vela-syndrome here?

    • i think Vela’s problem wasn’t a lack of talent to succeed at Arsenal but his partying. I know quite a few mexican’s who used to party with him, and they tell me he was a big drinker

  14. He’s 20 years old. Something tells me if he had the potential to be a world beater he would have more than 2 goals in 17 games at age 20. How I would love to be proven wrong.

    • too early to say. not everyone develops at the same pace. where was drogba at 20? 64 games 12 goals, between the ages of 20-24.

      • Fair point, as I said, I hope he proves me wrong. After Chamakh, Gervinho, Bendtner, Arshavin, Park, and Vela, I just struggle to feel confident about an Arsenal player developing as expected.

      • Drogba apart from about 3 season doesn’t have the best goal record, just scores on the big occasions.
