Nacho: I didn’t think twice about joining Arsenal

Nacho: I didn’t think twice about joining Arsenal

Arsenal new boy Nacho Monreal has revealed he didn’t think twice about joining the Gunners once he heard of the interest from Arsene Wenger and says he’ll take comfort from the way fellow former-Malaga man Santi Cazorla has settled at the Emirates.

Signed on Thursday’s transfer deadline day, the left-back could be thrust into the limelight this afternoon against Stoke with Kieran Gibbs injured and question marks hanging over the form of Andre Santos.

Speaking to Arsenal.com in his first interview since touching down on English soil, the 26-year-old Spanish international revealed that it’ll be a bonus joining a squad brimming with compatriots.

“To be honest, when I was given the option to come here I went for it because it’s a massive club. I didn’t even have to think about it.

“Of course, there are Spanish players here and a lot of youngsters, which this club is known to attract. I’m delighted to be able to train and play with those guys and I hope my stay here will be the best it possibly can.

“I’ve watched loads of Arsenal games and there have been legends that have played for this club. I know everything I can from watching the television and from what Santi has told me in this relatively short period of time.”

Confirming that he’s spoken with Santi Cazorla before signing on the dotted line in N5, Nacho said the presence of the diminutive midfielder will help calm any residing nerves.

“Yes, I spoke to Santi, we had a long conversation about things,” he continied.

“I asked how things were here and he only had very positive things to say. He said that Arsenal was a massive club, the people are great and it’s really just a big family. He only had good things to say. I am sure we can be successful this season and I am really looking forward to the challenge.

“Yes it does [help that Cazorla has been a success]. It helps that I’ve been able to share a dressing room with him at Malaga, that everything’s gone well and that the people here have been incredible in welcoming me.

“As there’s a familiar face in Santi, I’m a lot calmer about things. Having shared a dressing room with someone who’s already made this journey is a good feeling. Now it’s my turn and I can’t wait to follow in his footsteps.”

  4. This is a good signing for a real problem area, Gibbs maybe good but he plays one game then is injured for four. I’m sorry to say the stakes are so high now their is no place for sympathy even if he comes back with nacho you have security. Not injury prone and is that good……hope he plays well to warrant a place ahead of gibbo.

  5. Who else reckons our team will quite solid next season?? With no one leaving in the summer (ohh expect santos)
The squad I reckon should be olrite !? We have enough back up for each position && if possible in the summer new quality player joining. I reckon we should be olrite :)

    • “With no one leaving in the summer (ohh expect santos)”

      And Sagna…??

Hopefully Chamakh, Squillaci, Denilson and Park will finally be sold. Arshavin’s contract is up in the summer, and Djourou might be sold too. And who knows what’ll happen to our injury prone duo, Diaby and Rosicky

Point is, there’s a lot of holes that will need to be filled. Hopefully guys like Eisfeld and Campbell (assuming he gets a WP) will be ready to step up to the first team by the start of next season.

    • I’ve been thinking about that a lot recently. This may be the first summer in a long time where we don’t lose a key player. *touch wood*
Yes, that’s partly because we don’t necessarily have the calibre of player we had three years ago, but also because the better players are either a) relatively new or b) on a long contract (except Sagna).
We may actually experience a summer where we take a step forward in terms of overall squad strength.

    • In theory, this is one of the strongest sides we’ve had in years. We’ve got Podolski, Giroud, Cazorla, Wilshere – all very exceptional players. In the past, we’ve had one player who carries the team. First Cesc, then that dutch cunt. Walcott is beginning to show the potential that we thought we’d never see, which is a great surprise (and testament to AW’s patience and ability to mold a player).

Our wingers have been a bit underwhelming this season. It’s taken a while for Podolski to settle into both the team and consistently playing at LW bt he seems to be gaining some form now.

Gervinho is still having problems replicating his Lille form here. His lack of passing ability has been a big issue in a pass-heavy Arsenal side. Ox has also found difficulty finding form this season; partly due to Walcott’s form but he still needs to find some consistency when given a chance.

I don’t want to ‘kill’ Le Coq but it’s unfortunate than whenever he gets a chance for a sustained period in the first team – he picks up an injury. His loss has become Ramsey’s gain. Le Coq has tremendous potential though and I hope he fulfills it with Arsenal. We went through seasons suffering with a half-decent Song until one day that caterpillar turned into a butterfly. Le Coq doesn’t have the benefit of time as we chase that trophy we so urgently need for a good morale boost. Do we need a DM this summer? Depends largely on how Ramsey does for the remainder of this season.

I think we’re only one left winger, one back up striker and one RB (if Sagna leaves) short of being well equipped across the park. Most won’t agree with me but I don’t think we need another CB. JD was fourth choice CB and left because of lack of playing time. Anyone who agrees to join our club as 4th choice is not going to be much better than JD. Despite our defensive record, we have 3 world class (yes, world class!) CBs in Kos, Per and Verm. We just haven’t defended well as a team. Don’t waste the cash on a 4th choice CB, promote Miquel who I rate highly.

      TL;DR:
We need a LW,backup ST and possibly a RB this summer to truly compete at the top. Promote Miquel.

  11. I know we all can’t wait to get a taste of our new Nacho/see Santos out of the starting 11, but he’s only had one training session with us.. A less than perfect performance from him today will lead to the media, pundits and ,sadly, a lot of the Arsenal support labelling him a flop. He, and Arsenal, don’t need that shit right now

  12. Malaga to arsenal.

I could have sworn I left my nacho in the dressing room today. Who’s taken our nacho?

  15. @ Aussie Gooner and TomJ

lol I didn’t forget. I intentionally left Nicky B. out because something tells me he won’t be sold this summer. If he’s willing to stay and fight for a place, I think Wenger will give him another shot.

  16. nd add 2-3 quality players like santi, pod and HFB we’ll be much closer top the top of the table next season.

Also,i read somewhere that Theo and Giroud have the most potent
Also,i read somewhere that Theo and Giroud have the most potent strike partnership this season, they’ve set each other up SEVEN times!!!that pisses all over that “connection”" with the Dutch skunk.

  17. Hope Monreal puts in an unreal performance today. The recent acquisitions in our squad mean we won’t be buying players who will quickly become deadwood. So if we get rid of the dross in the summer and add 2-3 quality players like santi, pod and HFB we’ll be much closer to the top of the table next season.

Yeah, but in case he won’t, please, don’t jump at him, this will be his first match with us.

      • Don’t worry, i’m not a doomer.I backed Giroud right after we bought him after seeing a compilation of all his goals last season and have never regretted it.

  18. Jesus navas would be a good addition villa and hummels and maybe a little belief

Thumb up 1 Thumb down 2

    • Navas can’t sign for anyone else, his homesickness (literally iirc) is too strong.

Wouldn’t say no to Hummels but if we’re raiding Dortmund I’d rather have Reus.

  19. Positive signing that position needed addressing what with prawn cracker legs out for the rest of the season. Let’s hope it has a positive effect on the Keystone Cops that inhabit our back four. Please Gunners don’t embarrass me today in front of my mates in the pub, please just remember the very basics of defence, that’s all I ask. COYG!

  20. Good to see Feo scoring a few now that he’s actually signed, and his Christmas form wasn’t just some weird Arsenal-spiting bollocks. When he scored our equaliser against Liverpool I nearly threw a glass of wine at the TV- was out on a date and watched the game on the sly, pretending to listen to the bird.

Good to hear of quality players not hesitating to sign on, and not having people say ”When ManU waved a stick o’ cash in front of me nose I couldn’t help but fuck off like a kid who nicked 10 quid off an old man”. (or whatever the quote was, I’m paraphrasing here).

    Ps. Welcome Nacho Monreal!

  25. 2 quality left backs for the near future, really liking the look that the Arsenal squad is taking. One more striker, a decent no. 2 for Shez and maybe a good proper winger and we’re all set for our new reign.
Can’t wait until we win the F.A. Cup in May.
