Arsenal Chairman Peter Hill-Wood says that neither of the two main shareholders want to sell their stakes in the club, and that he knows nothing of a supposed middle-east consortium wanting to buy the club.
The mega-rich group apparently sought to begin negotiations by planting stories in a couple of newspapers, but Hill-Wood said, “I have heard nothing and I don’t think anybody knows anything about it at the club.
“It all seems a bit of a waste of time. If there is this consortium, they can’t make any progress unless they attempt to get in touch. So I can’t say if there is anything to it or not.
“But even if they did make an approach, my understanding is our two major shareholders do not want to sell.”
Stan Kroenke remains the majority shareholder with Alisher Usmanov holding most of the rest of the shares.

I do not mean to criticise anyone and please dont start saying “i should support a club in my own country” (i already do) but i think arsenal fans are the most passive bunch in the prem. People will bang on about change but not one protest against the board worth of mention has taken place. Its like a collective “meh” from you lot in london and an apparent “whatever happens, happens” attitude. I mean no disrespect but the arsenal is slowly dying and the ones closest to it, who’se voice can be heard more clearly than ours arent saying anything loudly enough.

First time you have ever replied to me, wish the circumstances would have been different. I am not in a position to do anything where i am, i wish i was. I love this club same as you. Whether i have a right to have such a strong opinion on such things is debatable but in all my years on arseblog i have never spoken ill of the players or the manager. Mainly because while i do think they are at fault, the board is the main culprit. The only thing i wish is arsenal fans would make their displeasure in the board more of a priority than having this rift between the wenger outs and akbs. Does it piss me off that those in a more privilaged position seemingly dont do much? Yes it fucking does.

The club is in a good position. We have had a few below-par seasons, but we all knew this was coming.
The only thing the board seem to be doing wrong for me is that they try to make out too much that Wenger has loads of money to spend when he doesn’t, it adds unnecessary pressure to the guy. I also think that the wage structure could be better, although we don’t know who sets the wages.

@pete, yes, the stadium is partly to blame for our poor sponsorship deals but only indirectly in that the stadium debt – which won’t be paid off till about 2030 – has limited what we’ve been able spend on the squad.
For lucrative sponsorship you need past success on the pitch and the likelihood of that success continuing in the future. A club that looks to be a bit on the slide isn’t as attractive to sponsors as one that is investing bucket-loads of cash in young talent so as to cement their position at the top and build for the coming five years. This may be why the deals we’ve just sealed, though they’re bringing in more than the previous ones in absolute terms, aren’t relatively especialy good – relative to what the really big clubs are getting, that is. Our new commercial income is half Bayern’s, for instance, less than half what United bring in. We can’t look to it to make us more competitive. Hopefully it’s enough to keep us mid-table – and the massively rising Premiership income will help on that front – but I don’t think it’s enough to improve us, not with the likes of Chelsea, City and United doing so much better on the sponsorship front.
Apart from the rising Premiership revenue, I’m not sure quite what we can look to. For the past decade we’ve lived on sales – property sales (now over), player sales (likely to be pretty much over in a couple of years, as in recent times Wenger has bought more older players with minimal resale value). Wenger’s great strength in the past has been his ability to spot and nurture young talent. That’s what has sustained us financially as well as given us success on the pitch. Recent signings have been less successful, which financially is a worrying sign.

A good point! The boss gets accused of not spending and strengthening the team enough as that’s the only real outlet we have in finding a reason for the clubs ‘current state’.
Yet we are told there is money to spend, then somehow a figure is mentioned but then suddenly, there is a counter argument that there no money to spend and it is all a mess.
But thinking rationally for a second, back in the glory days we never had problem with recruitment, money was spent when it had to and when things needed to get done they got it done. For example I don’t think the Mata situation would have happened back then, I’m sure Arsene and any manager wants a player asap so why are deals taking so long to get done, in this case it can’t be the manager.
For all he goes on about respecting the finances and a operating within our means, simply Wenger respects and loves this club as much as us and for that he refuses to openly criticise as for him it would go against his principles, though he does it at his own expense. I can all but guarantee that if Wenger was at PSG or a club like that he will buy big and whoever he wants. Why? simply because he can! At clubs like that he won’t be required to worry about the clubs finances and just to focus on the sporting side. Which is what he had done in the his glory days here.
For me he has been given to many shackles, though that could be all his own doing but I think he merely accepts how things have got be done.

How does everyone else do it? Sponsorship deals. We need to maximise our commercial income, allowing investments in the team which you would hope would lead to a few cups – which pay big money.
That then gets bums on seats, and when you’re winning you’re more likely to pay for new kits, memorabilia and on match days are more likely to buy those expensive pints and pies. It all adds up.
It’s like a recession, people knuckle down on luxuries, and when things improve, we’re more likely to buy shit we don’t need just cus we’re in a good mood.

The point I would like to make is the stadium is both or problem and the answer. At some stage Sp*rs, Liverpool, Everton, Chelsea are going to have to upgrade their staidums. Only Utd make more on match day. The other clubs will have to go through the pain we have gone through and still are going through. I agree with you about the apathy of fans, Arsenal fans in particular. Whining about trophies and booing players – in Bendtner’s case once even before he’d got on to the pitch – is more their line than figuring out what they see as the problem and how they might do something constructive about it. Compare the ridiculous Black Scarf (or whatever it’s called) protest to the much more persistent and coherent attempts of United and Liverpool fans to get rid of the Glazers and Hicks & Gillet. The Black Scarf people can’t even agree among themselves whether they want rid of Wenger or Kroenke and their idea of an effective political action is to stand around for ten minutes with a pint in their hands before taking their seats for the game. Kroenke and Wenger must be shaking in their boots. Did anyone notice the protesters were there?
The anti-Glazer protests were much better organised but were doomed because for every protester boycotting games there were a hundred selfish, apathetic glory-hunting scabs to take up the seats. They were also doomed because of the tribalism of football fans generally which means we rejoice at other clubs’ misfortunes rather than giving them our support, pooling our numbers and our ideas. If every United fan had been behind the protests, and if Liverpool and Arsenal fans had given them some help instead of splitting their sides at the 700m of debt, the Glazers wouldn’t have lasted six months. A universal return of season tickets and an empty stadium (which doesn’t look nice on TV) are pretty effective political weapons. Had the Glazers been forced to pull out, other clubs might have benefited too, as their immitators, Kroenke or Hicks and Gillett, would have had second thoughts.
But that’s football fans for you, or anyway a depressingly large number of them who want nothing more than the lavish spending of money, an unending supply of trophies, the reduction of ticket prices and the chance to crow at their rivals’ misfortune. Apart from that, they’re not fussed, which is what makes us such cannon fodder for greedy and incompetent owners who’ll bankrupt their clubs or load them with debt.
You hit the nail on the head Miranda, if we as fans want to effect change we must make a sacrifice too. If I don’t like the service my local Tesco offer me I don’t shop there, if enough customers feel the same there comes a point when Tesco see their figures are down so start offering incentives to win the customers back.
I have always thought the first thing the fans need to do is boycott a high profile game like Man U at home. Even if the club have received the money for an empty seat through season tickets, the embarassment of a half empty stadium on show to a worldwide audience would make an impact.
Midfield, boycotting one game is useless; it’s actually worse than useless because it just damages the club’s revenue a little without achieving the objective. Only a sustained and total boycott, involving a return of season tickets for the duration, a refusal to buy merchandise and subscribe to arsenal player, i.e. many months of nothing going into the coffers, would have the desired impact. It’s not going happen. Even knowing what the Glazers were stealing from the club wasn’t enough to get the glory-hunters at United to see sense, and some – probably still the majority of Arsenal fans? – think the way we are heading is the safe and morally virtuous way. The only thing that persuades fans to act is total catastrophe Portsmouth-style; sometimes not even that is enough.

I still don’t see why Kroenke wouldn’t sell in case he gets a great offer in. The Club has been regressing on the pitch and if we keep regressing, which the lack of CL will only serve as a catalyst, The stadium will be emptier often, we won’t be able to negotiate the most favourable partnership contracts with sponsors, and our appeal to new fans will lower. Foreign fans like me started and will start supporting the team, especially as a child, which plays well and wins things.
Of course we have a great stadium, a stable financial position and a good name on the market, but without success and supporters willing to put their money in it, it’s not half as attractive for a businessman like Kroenke, at least that’s how I would think so.
Anyways, if something can get him out of our Club, it’s fine for me, not that I believe he is resposnisble for the lack of money spent, as he hasn’t taken a penny out of the Club, but his lack of caring is ridiculously annoying, he probably doesn’t care whether we win or lose and it’s not acceptable.

I don’t think you need to worry about the business and commercial aspect too much. The Prem Lge is plenty lucrative and its the fan base/history that decides if a club is worth investing in. Liverpool are in worse shape than us and have an equally bad a run as we have had over the few years, they have spent more but are able to market themselves because of their fan base etc. Real Madrid, pre Mourinho were doing rubbish, no CL’s or League Titles and a few trophy less years also, yet they were hitting the number one spot in terms of money regularly.

I think you’ve got it arse-first. The more good offers Kroenke gets, the more he thinks he’s on to a good thing and should hang in there. He’s here because he regards us as a safe place to park capital requiring no financial input from him. In addition, should he ever need to raise cash to prop up his other failing sports enterprises, there’s nothing to stop him doing a Glazer, which he is free to so long as Usmanov is denied a seat on the board, an action he has consistently refused to rule out. (This is to his credit, imo, as at least it shows he is honest and realistic.)
As for the ‘Middle East consortium’, it surely has to be none other than an increasingly desperate Usmanov in fancy dress and a false moustache. This is sad, I think, because it reveals Usmanov to be hopelessly naive when it comes to strategy – he too has got it arse-first. Telling Kroenke that there are buyers out there prepared to pay over the odds is just another way of saying ‘Hey, Mr, you’re sitting on a really valuable asset there, and, whatever happens on the pitch, even if Arsenal got relegated, your investment is rock-solid safe!’ The only thing that would make Kroenke sell up is the fear that his share values are tumbling, which won’t happen so long as Usmanov is out there wanting to buy.

Our scouting network has no doubt deteriorated ever since dein left. Now we have a lone wenger who has no where to look but to his native, no senior advisor to collaborate with where with dein he had all of that. I laud his work but this summer we need not be taking any gambles, just go for the best proven there is, splash the cash where absolutely needed and watch arsenal be great again. As far as this season goes we made it clear where our priorities lie the moment we sold rvp and to a smaller extent song, we pretty much traded any chance we had for having a good season. So i’m not really dissapointed with this season coz my expectations were never at all high to begin with. But come this summer the experiments have to stop, buy like you want to win something ffs. Last straw arsene, last fucking straw.

As for this site, yes, very nice except for the ‘your comment is awaiting moderation’ problem which I’ve fallen foul of today, not for the first time. At first I thought these notices were just some sort of software glitch; now I’m not sure.
I’m OK with being censored – the site has a right to censor any opinion it likes – and I’m in favour of it for the obvious stuff such as hate speech, racism, sexism, personal abuse, etc. It’s not knowing what’s going on that’s the problem; some topics/opinions must be taboo but I can’t figure out which. There was nothing in my post (not awaiting moderation any longer, just vanished so evidently unacceptable) that I’d expect to cause problems – obviously or I wouldn’t have bothered to write it.

Whatever side of the argument you are on, whether you are “Trust” brigade or the “Rust” brigade, the truth is, that no one could deny that for the past 8 years the team has been in a state of decline. Its not like suddenly after going toe to toe with Chelsea and United for 8 years, this season has come as an aberration. Even those who support Wenger can at best claim that Wenger’s presence has helped slow down this process of decline, and as long as Arsene is there is will ensure that the decline will happen slowly. No one could really argue that Arsenal has taken giant strides forward in the past 8 years. Its been decline, but due to Wenger’s presence slow decline. That is what even his most ardent supporters could say at best.
This is the reason why Wenger needs to go. Because the truth is that with Wenger there, the best case scenario is slow decline. Some one who could actually take the gunners forward. Arsenal have gone from being a respected oppostion in Europe to one that makes up the numbers at best, in England, Arsenal have not been within lightyears of winning the league in those 8 years, usually finihsing 20 points or so behind the leaders. With Wenger around at best this scenario could continue. Arsenal could continue making up the numbers in Europe and continue to struggle to narrowly finish fourth.

Everyone wants a new, younger manager able to do a better job than Wenger has in the last two or three years. Unfortunately not everyone believes that we’ll get one. Look who’s doing the choosing: Kroenke-Gazidis, not exactly the most knowledgeable and experienced of people in European football. The American owners don’t have a good record when it comes to appointments. So far they’ve gone British – the British being visible and what they have heard of – and they’ve tried to go safe. Martin O’Neil, Alex McLeish, King Kenny, Roy Hodgson, Brendan Rodgers, Paul Lambert …Not terrible managers, in some cases, just distinctly unambitious and not what we need to improve.
I don’t disagree with your analysis, just with your hope that things will to be fine once Kroenke has realised it’s time to appoint Wenger’s successor. If Dein were in charge of the selection I’d feel differently, but then, if he were, Wenger might be managing better himself.
What is worst is that Wenger is unaccoutable to seemingly everyone. I mean I doubt even if Arsenal were to get relegated the Board would not touch him and the Wenger brigage would also say, just him time, he will get the team promoted and then win things again. I do not understand this fixation that in the entire Universe, Wenger is ONE person who could possibly do something good for Gunners, ANYONE and EVERYONE else would ruin, bankrupt the finance and Arsenal would be relegated or something.
I do not understand this fear of the unknown, this fear to just be happy with being mediocre, and not even attempt something new or different to take a step forward, in fear of a “what if, it didn’t work”?. Also look at this scenario, 8 years ago Arsenal slid from ever being able to challenge for the league, and Wenger was unable to take the gunners back to those heights. Now Arsenal are about to slide out of the top 4. We all know its happening, if not this season (somehow) then surely next season or the season after that. I mean if in a race after a head start you are stagnant, and everyone one else continues to move forward, then those behind (Spurs, Everton, Liverpool) will sooner or later catch up and overtake you. With Arsenal there is no denying that the best someone could say is that Wenger has kept Arsenal stagnant. Once those behind overtake, then I doubt Wenger will be able to take the gunners back in top 4.
Those on the board are not stupid, well they are, but not so stupid that they do not understand that now is the time to sell. Once gunners drop out of the Champs League those shares will be worth a lot less. That is why this takeover talk has popped up in the first place. No doubt the talk has been greatly exaggerated, but there has been some discussion about it. I read above posts on who is to blame, Wenger or the Board – both, and both need to go. Arsenal need serious investment. Arsenal keep turning up with a bow and arrow against armies that have nuclear weapons, and believe that the Bow and Arrow will win. I fully support a takeover that will bring in a new manager more in tune with the present day football, and with the funds that will make Arsenal compete.

No, the shares won’t be worth less if we drop out out of the top four; they might hold up even if we were relegated. Share values are determined by what people are willing to pay for them. Though this is normally the same thing as the product’s success, in this case it is not. So long as there is a buyer so desperate to own us he’s willing to pay a completely ridiculous price, Kroenke has no incentive to sell because the existence of that buyer tells him his shares are going to keep going up.
The prospective buyer has blown it. A more cunning strategy would be to switch his attention to another club, pour money into them, make a massive success of it – and sit back and watch Kroenke’s terrified face. I never said the shares would worth less, but yes it is common sense that the shares of a club in when it is in champs league would be worth more then when it is not in the champs league.
