Arsenal set to extend stadium capacity

Arseblog News has learned that Arsenal will extend the capacity of the Emirates Stadium this summer by up to 10,500 seats.

Majority shareholder Stan Kroenke has instructed work to begin as soon as the season finishes, and will draft in US firm Mortenson Construction to carry out the upgrade.

The job will involve removing large sections of the existing seating at lower and upper levels of both ends of the ground, and replacing them with narrower seats. At the moment each seat is 20″ wide so by installing new, slimmer seats, the capacity can be increased.

The insider told us, “Kroenke is determined to make this happen, he sees the capacity of Old Trafford as a target for Arsenal, and believes that this will help close that gap.

“He’s also convinced that supporters being closer together will improve the atmosphere, in the absence of safe standing he believes this is the next best thing.

“There’s no hope that ticket prices will be lower, so trying to sell people smaller seats for the same money may well be a tricky one. One idea mooted at board level is that those in the new seats might be given a voucher for the Armoury or discount pies to compensate them.”

Mortenson and Kroenke (KSE) have worked together before on the construction and development of the Pepsi Center in Denver, home of the NBA’s Denver Nuggets, NHL’s Colorado Avalanche, AFL’s Colorado Crush and NLL’s Colorado Mammoth.

The timing of the move might raise eyebrows too, when empty seats are par for the course these days, but the increased capacity would make the Emirates eligible to host premier events like the Champions League final which require a minimum of 63,500 seats.

It is also rumoured that with a new kit deal in the offing, Arsenal will become the first Premier League club to have officially sponsored under-armour.

The commercial team have been in discussions with a number of blue chip companies, with Calvin Klein said to be amongst the favourites after Chief Commercial Officer Tom Fox was spotted in New York lunching with Emmet Brown, a key player at the fashion label.

  1. Very good piece blogs and you should have put in there a “Diaby to recover in 3weeks: not as earlier feared” and just see how people would eat their own words.

  2. Ha! I completely bought this and was about to share the link with some people until I read the comments. Well played.

    • I think we do have the capability to increase the seating. I forgot the name of the paper, but a few years back there was an article that confirmed that increasing the capacity was possible.

Thumb up 2 Thumb down 0

    • yes we easily can increase to 80 000 (i read that somewhere) but the council ont allowed right as for now the public transport isnt up to standard to take the extra 20 000

  4. knowing it was april fools i was expecting outlandish ridiculousness… I kinda think some of this might be a goer!

Thumb up 2 Thumb down 2

  5. well you got me, you got me big time.. i even started thinking that the club would use this as an excuse for not buying players this summer because of the “new costs the stadium will need for this process”

    • Dr. Emmet Brown was the name of the zany physicist/inventor in the Back to the Future Films. In the first film, Michael J Fox’s character assumes the name Calvin Klein as a result of the printing in his underwear.

  6. Good April fool.. But actually also a good idea to develops.. I hope Kroenke read this & start to work it 😀

  7. What has really happened is that Arsenal and Tottenham have agreed to merge .
Two new tiers will be added increasing the ground capacity to 120,000 . The team will play in red white and blue
and will be known as the North London Chargers. It is all part of the new British and Irish Super league. There will be four London teams North, West, South and East . Liverpool and Everton will merge as will City and United. Newcastle and Sunderland ,Villa and Birmingham will merge as will Celtic and Rangers. and there will be an Ed inbugh team. An Irish side will play in Dublins Croke park. A Welsh team based in Cardiff, two Yorkshire teams based in Leeds and Sheffield and a combined midlands team in Nottingham. The last three teams will be based in Abu Dhabi, Quatar. and one in New York. Official announcements are pending. The season will kich off in March and end in October. Internationals will be played durring November. Teams must have 70% of their players from the home countries.
Ticket prices must not exceed 50 pound per match. Seats must be wide enough for sumo wrestlers.
Pies and beer will be free.

  8. Stupid considering that arsenal have only just paid off the stadium debts. If the club success is more important than finances, then this would not happen. We now supposedly have money that we should spend on PLAYERS not on the stadium so that we can bring success back to the club rather than have more debts to pay just as we finished paying the previous debts.

Thumb up 2 Thumb down 33

  9. For some unknown reasons, I so wished that this would have been true. Anyway, you had me until the voucher for pies stuffs. 🙂

Thumb up 4 Thumb down 0

  10. Ha!

Raises a point though, what is the likelyhood of safe standing at the emirates to increase capacity (and atmosphere). An all terraced north bank would be nice.

I’d wager close to zero though.. 🙁

Thumb up 1 Thumb down 3

    • Safe standing is not possible until the law changes. The Taylor Report that came out after Hillsborough said that all top flight stadia must be all seater. And there is a clause in most stadium safety certificates that the issuing body can rescind the licence in the event of persistent standing. Which is why it winds me up when people slag off stewards for making them sit down.
So the answer to you question is ‘zero chance because Arsenal wouldn’t be allowed to’

  11. The issue of expanding the capacity of emirate stadium is nothing but for their selfish interest because both the manager and the boards are all after money not the trophies… Why not use the money and bring world class players that would lead to the success of the team….. One love Arsenal

Thumb up 1 Thumb down 25

  12. Didn’t fool me. Why would we believe we’re expanding the stadium when we can’t even fill the one we have ? Notice how many empty seats we have had at the Emirates this season ? And there’ll be more spaces vacant if the Arsenal decline continues.

    ” In Arsene we rust.”

Thumb up 4 Thumb down 45

  13. Arsenal have been looking into the idea of having a standing section where supporters would have to stand sideways .this would increase the capacity and therefore make more money for the tight yank !

  14. You know, I woke up this morning, checked my Facebook and Supersport Football had posted that Frank Lampard has signed a pre contract with us. First thing I did was come to this blog to verify just how bullshit it is, not cos it’s April Fools, but cos he’s 35, and then I get hit with this story, while still caught up in a previous April Fools story. Then again, the same girl caught me for bout 4 running, telling me she was pregnant, and I bought it every year. Fuck I’m gullible. Gullible Gooner I remain.

  15. I’ve always thought the most effective pranks are the ones that you don’t warn people about 1st!

Can’t wait to see how the stadium looks with the extra seating though!!!

Thumb up 2 Thumb down 0

  16. Along with this, I hear they will be narrowing the turnstiles to make sure that you are not too wide for the seats. Luckily I have my “Fitness with Diaby” DVD to work out to, so I will be in trimmer shape by the time the new seats come round.

  17. You had me til the discount pie. Kroenke wouldn’t compensate anybody for fuck all. I believed it til then. CK sponsored arsenal under armour would be top top quality

  19. Why wait until April 1st for a joke ? We’ve had one running Arsenal for the last eight years and counting. An even bigger joke is that there are still fools who support him. And not JUST in April !

      • DoubleDoubleDouble – Thanks for your fascinating contribution. Anything AT ALL bother you about Arsenal ? What do you think we could be doing better ?

“Boring” ? I’ve been bored with the predictability of our last eight seasons. When some fans worry about if we can beat a struggling, relegation threatened Reading side in order to stay in the race for fourth spot, it shows how far our once great club has fallen.

Arsenal sell their best player Robin Van Persie, to their rivals Manchester United. United then go on to win the league with the help of his goals and assists.

Oh come on. Who would ever believe that ? …..April fool !

  21. Abou Diaby is estimated to “earn” 50-60k a week. Thanks to Wenger’s irrational faith in him, he’ll now be out for yet ANOTHER long period. This time for up to nine months. We’ll be paying him between 1.8 and 2.1 million during that time. Just for him to spend lying on the treatment bench, and to watch from the stands. A waste of resources that could have been better spent on signing the world class players that we ( supposedly ) can’t afford. It’s not his fault that he’s an injury magnet, but if the situation had been managed better, with Diaby’s appalling record, any reasonable person could see that he wasn’t worth the continuing gamble. But not Our Great Leader. In spite of all the evidence pointing to him being a lost cause, Diaby got awarded a new contract !!! And now this latest episode.

It appears Diaby has had 32 injuries to date ! Yes, the Dan Smith tackle was bad, and compounded his troubles. But Diaby had a history of niggling injuries BEFORE that. It wasn’t as though his problems started from the Smith challenge itself. And that incident was six years ago ! Can we reasonably expect him to have overcome that by now ? I think we can. Instead, he’s only proved to be more accident prone. Surely now he has to be dispensed with permanently. Divide his number of appearances for Arsenal since 2006 ( 123 ) by those seven years, and it averages out at 17.5 games a season. Is that cost efficient ? I feel sorry for his career, but to still persist with him at Arsenal is rank stupidity.

    • I toally agree…

      With your last line!!!!

The rest is a pointless rant. You can see why faith has been shown, with RVP being te best example – this coukd easily have been him but we got him fit a healthy if not disloyal return from him. And all this stuff about his wages for the next 9 months – we have to pay him, we can’t not pay him.

    • bingobongo – Go away ? Why ? This is a forum to debate issues surrounding Arsenal, and whether we are being run efficiently and sensibly or not. Something we should ALL have a keen interest in, I would have thought, including presumably, you.

On the Diaby issue ( which is just one of many ) I say we’re NOT. From your reaction, I’d say you think we ARE. I stated in my post above ; “Divide his number of appearances for Arsenal since 2006 ( 123 ) by those seven years, and it averages out at 17.5 games a season. Is that cost efficient ? I feel sorry for his career, but to still persist with him at Arsenal is rank stupidity”. So make your case for the defence, please.

And while you’re thinking of how to justify this gross waste of money and mismanagement, you might want to explain why your idol just said this ; “I hope he will not give up and will continue,” the French manager told reporters. “I hope he will find the resources and the strength to fight for a comeback because he was quite down.”

Wenger still hasn’t learned ANYTHING, has he ? He STILL wants to keep him at the club, continuing to pour 50-60 thousand a week down the drain. Incredible.

What would YOU do, then ?

      ” In Arsene we rust.”

  26. Recycle the story in a month, give it some fake provenance, and watch Oliver Kaye of the Times pick it up and publish it to add to his Emirates super league story – “During an Arsenal sponsored trip to Amsterdam, local council officials were reported to have been sounded out unofficially about a plan to increase capacity at Emirates, contravening a key condition of planning permission for the Emirates. When challenged Arsenal and Islington council denied that any plan was in preparation.
MP Jeremy Corbyn has added his weight to the groundswell of opposition towards Arsenal’s emerging plans for a massive increase in capacity. Friends quoted him as saying “It is a shame because the site could have been developed in a much more imaginative and suitable way. This just typifies Arsenal’s disrespectful and cavalier attitude to the local community.” When contacted by the Arsenal Supporters’ Trust, Corbyn refused to comment further.

  28. People saying that we don;t even fill it now are missing the point. I know this is an April fool, but AC/Inter Milan, Real Madrid, Barcelona, they don’t sell out every week, but they do for the big domestic and european games. If we had 70,000 seats it would still sell out against Spurs, Chelsea, Man Utd, Man City, Liverpool and in Europe. I know it isn’t happening, but it wouldn’t be that stupid. Besides, the only reason it isn’t already 70,000 seats is because the Islington council said that road and rail infrastructure has to be improved first.
