Napoli confirm Higuain interest

Italian side Napoli have confirmed their interest in signing Gonzalo Higuain from Real Madrid.

Arsenal have been linked with the Argentine striker for most of the summer, with reports last week, now obviously premature, that a deal was imminent.

However, with the Gunners sights now apparently trained on Liverpool’s bitey racist, Luis Suarez, the Serie A outfit are looking to spend some of the near €70m they received from PSG for star striker Edinson Cavani.

In a Twitter Q&A, Napoli’s President, Aurelio De Laurentiis, was asked if it were true that there were talks regarding Higuain. His reply, “It’s true.”

Quite where this leaves Arsenal pursuit of the player remains to be seen. There’s something of a tradition of Argentine strikers in Naples, and from looking the most likely of summer signings, Arsene Wenger could miss out on a player still favoured by many fans.

The only signing of the summer thus far has been Yaya Sanogo on a free from Auxerre, so hopefully Napoli’s interest will force our hand a bit and we can get this deal done.

    • So napoli want a guy who’s tired of being back up to benzema, madrid want a guy to play with/ahead of benzema and we want the same guy? Great merry go round if we get him.

Though i know some would prefer the back up running away from madrid or worse some fat unfit player tired of living in a dutch skunk’s shadow/smell

Thumb up 2 Thumb down 3

    • Worst case scenario is if Napoli get Higuain and then Madrid get Suarez with that money. Rooney either stays in Manchester or moves to Chelsea, Spu*s get Benteke and we’re left with Sanogo when the dust is settled.

Thumb up 69 Thumb down 0

      • Well I just hope the club realises that if we don’t sign big names this summer, a large number of current first team players, including from the “British core”, will also look to leave using the exact same excuses as Van Persie, and they will be quite justified. Then, Arsene’s ability to magically land a top four place may not reproduce itself, and finally, whoever thought they could benefit from the increased financial assets of Arsenal will find that the club has in fact depreciated greatly in value.

Pure and simply, we are playing Russian roulette, we took one shot in the summer of 2011, and I hope nobody is stupid enough take another shot this summer

Thumb up 38 Thumb down 2

      • Goonster,

Thanks for reminding me to gouge out my eyes with a spoon today.

That “worst case scenario” is starting to look like the “most likely scenario.”

Oh well. Sanogo to score 30 goals?

Thumb up 13 Thumb down 0

        • How many players have Manchester United signed? Man City? Oh wait I just checked. Man U signed one; Man City actually signed a few too. Fuck.

I think this list says it all:

        • @Henry’s Almighty Tallywacker
just because other clubs are not signing many players doesnt mean we should be passive and join the lot by sitting there and taking our time. dont forget we were 4th, we should be more desperate to improve our position than others above us.

Thumb up 3 Thumb down 0

    • @Henry’s Almighty Tallywacker – depressing looking list and with Man City uping their game yet again, we better start making some major signings pronto if we’re going to seriously contend for the title and make sure our targets don’t get snapped up by other clubs! If we have the money, use it already! On the plus side, for the first time ever, I’m not worried about who’s going to be leaving 🙂

Thumb up 1 Thumb down 0

      • Question is, would you take “Vile Racist” over “Nobody”?

Mind you, Nobody was Manchester United’s second-highest scorer a few years back (nicknamed “Own Goal”). He’s sort of gone missing in recent years, so he’d come cheap. Perhaps if United threw Howard Webb into the deal, Nobody could rediscover his form at Arsenal?

        One can dream, can’t one?

Thumb up 4 Thumb down 0

        • I don’t know. Nobody is worse than Somebody in my books. People can change, and some people can even be the 30-goal striker that a club needs to close the gap on a currently frightening disparity in quality. Non-entities, however, do very little.

I’m just throwing that out there. Still uncomfortable with Suarez, but I’m also steeling myself for the possibility that my personal discomfort has no bearing on Arsenal’s transfers, and we’ll have to live with him like it or not.

Ah, who am I kidding? This is a non-starter. We won’t bid £40m for Suarez.

          Welcome to Arsenal, Sanogo!

Thumb up 3 Thumb down 0

    • No worries.

“there are talks regarding Higuain inside Napoli’s camp” doesn’t mean that they want him, bid for him, sign him.

Maybe they only had a talk with their scouts and came up with some names. Very common stuff at most clubs. I guess.

It’s not about football in the transfer window. It’s the game of monopoly. Look, the like of PSG, Monaco, Mancity, Chelsea, Malaga … have been trying to get into the money game, not the football game. The old RM empires like RM, Milan, BM and some ‘new’ faces like MU don’t just sit still and wait for others to come to displace their thrones.

Therefore, bluffing and poking and around is expected.

Just how Arsenal responds to that is more important to Arsenal fans.

With millions of pounds Arsenal gets from the tour, we can ‘up’ our bids to meet any asking prices! Don’t worry.

Thumb up 3 Thumb down 6

  1. They have already bought 2 players from Madrid. Their relationship seems good with RM. Hope Higuain wants to move to Arsenal. That’s the only way Napoli’s higher bid won’t matter.

Thumb up 25 Thumb down 1

    • Who said they have made a higher bid??

It is my understanding that we had a fee agreed in principle and at the last minute Perez stepped in and increased the asking price. Wenger being Wenger got the hump and went cold on the deal.

What i cant understand is why he now goes to Liverpool and offers £30mill for Suarez as i am sure the offer for Higuain was lower than that. If you want Higuain offer £25-30mill and get it done. Unless of course the Suarez bid is a smokescreen to get RM playing ball.

The trouble is that the vultures are circling now. Big clubs have either sold players or missed out on original targets so Higuain becomes attractive to more suitors.

I guess what i am saying is… If you have £70mill act like it and pay what the selling club wants. Getting a spectacular signing and not talking about one is miles apart.

Man City wants Jesus Navas so they pay the asking price and surprise susprise…. he signs.

      Simple really.

Thumb up 67 Thumb down 2

      • I really wish they’d just offer the £30mil that Higuain is clearly worth and get the deal done. Having Higuain would make me so happy. Most supporters I speak to say exactly the same thing. I’ve never wanted Rooney or Suarez and whilst Arsenal shouldn’t base their transfer activity around my preferences, I’m know that I’m not alone.

Thumb up 25 Thumb down 0

        • It’s strange that we’d be willing to offer £30m for Suarez, but not for Higuain.

I wonder why Wenger thinks Suarez is a better player. Statistically, he’s not. Suarez has to hog the ball and take kazillions of shots to score. Higuain’s conversion rate, on the other hand, is the best in Europe.

Bah. It’s doesn’t matter, does it?

Thumb up 9 Thumb down 1

      • “Pay what the selling club wants” is the problem in this deal..

As you said yourself, “we had a fee agreed in principle and at the last minute Perez stepped in and increased the asking price”. Are you saying we should just drop our pants and bend over the desk by just saying yes to the new price?

Its like going to a showroom with £10,000, haggling over the £4999 price on the windscreen, coming to an agreement of £4500 and asking for the finance documents to get drawn up. Then, when the dealer comes back with the paperwork he says “Bad News.. I know you have £10,000 to spend so while I was at the printer I decided you can afford to pay an extra grand on top of the original asking price so if you want it you will have to pay £5999. Do you still want the car?”
You take a walk round the block to think about it, come back with an offer of £5800 and he says “We’ve had a chat here in the showroom and decided that we want £7999”.
Eventually you are going to tell the dealer to **** off, go to another showroom and perhaps pay £7000 for a car thats not as good as the one you originally wanted..
And would you expect, in that circumstance, somebody to say “Why did you haggle over the £4999 pricetag on the original car if you are now willing to pay £7000 for this one?”

Thumb up 5 Thumb down 0

  2. It will be a little disappointing if we end the window with Giroud, Sanogo and Gazidis’ bath duckie as striking options. I am sure the club is paddling furiously under the surface. I hope. Please let it be so.

Thumb up 63 Thumb down 2

  3. Why did we have to start dragging our feet over this deal? Just throw £30 million at Madrid and lets get our man!

I’d happily take Gonzalo over that bitey racist any day.

Thumb up 66 Thumb down 5

    • I am really hoping we get the diving, bitey ‘racist’ , He’s world class ,and if he stop his shit whilst at Arsenal ,I won’t care even if he was SATAN during his previous clubs.

Higuain is very small upgrade .

Thumb up 17 Thumb down 56

      • I care. He’ll drag the name of our great club through the mud (or should that be blood?). He’s a ticking time bomb waiting to go ka-boom. There’s no way in hell he’d suddenly become a saint and not make it about everything other than football.

As for his racist tendancies, how would he be greeted in the dressing room? we have a diverse team, I’d hate him to bring the spirit of the dressing room down.

Thumb up 23 Thumb down 5

      • I really don’t think that we as a club should even be considering Suarez, regardless of his talent. The media have a big enough vendetta against us as it is and at the first sign of a dvie or any foul play they’d be all over us. I Just can’t understand why we’d go for someone who is more expensive, has a huge amount of baggage and is banned for the first six games over someone who has comparable ability, supposedly costs less and has a clean slate.

Thumb up 40 Thumb down 0

        • …at the first sign of a dvie or any foul play they’d be all over us.

Not just the media. We’re not a club renowned for having referees conveniently look the other way either.

Thumb up 5 Thumb down 1

  4. I was almost sharing a video of Higuain’s goals the other day but didn’t thinking i might jinx it. Looks like i have jinxed it :@ sorry fellow gunners, all my fault…

Thumb up 24 Thumb down 2

  5. They got 70m for cavani? Unbelievable. This market is crazy nowadays, if we get happen to get higuain for 30m or less then it would be a steal!

Thumb up 4 Thumb down 11

  6. For years we have been crying out for a world class signing.Suarez is in the top 5 players in the world.Yet Gooners are geting upset we are not signing a player who wasnt first choice at Madrid

    Make you fucking minds up

Thumb up 27 Thumb down 58

    • Its about the type of player we sign, Wenger always harps on about “quality” and “character”. Ratty has the quality but not the character. He’d only disgrace us somehow. maybe not now but soon, and for the rest of his contract (until he worms out of it, cries out loud and runs off wailing to Real, PSG or Monaco).

Thumb up 11 Thumb down 1

    • Messi, Cristiano Ronaldo, Xavi, Iniesta and Neymar are probably a fair assessment of top 6……..Suarez doesn’t figure in there.

Thumb up 0 Thumb down 12

    • united fans were happy to take the dutch traitor off our hands, remember hes a player that they shrieked abuse at for years while he was wearing our shirt. those fans have no class. I thought we were better than that. I dont want to support someone (and if suarez puts on an arsenal shirt thats what I’ll have to do) who I used to regard with utter contempt, who has proven he does not respect the values and norms of english football.

this whole thing is so un-arsenal. we’re usually at the dive bars for last call, but now we’re in the big fancy nightclub with our dad’s credit card, unsure whether to tip the barman or the bouncer, the girl we’ve been eyeing up is sick of waiting for us to come over and chat, and now she’s being hit on by the italian bloke across the bar.

Thumb up 23 Thumb down 0

      • But we are sexier my friend, and the girl will pleasantly chat with the Italian so as not to hurt her feelings, them come over. She may not give up the bumhole straight away, but I feel this relationship will become consummated soon.

I reckon Suarez is a smokescreen; we knew they wouldn’t sell for 30 mil, and if they did we could just flog him for £35 mil on the next day to Man City or Chelsea (who are suited to such a disgusting mercenary ratty meanie). And I reckon Napoli are just being mates with Madrid on this and driving up the price a bit more; this is Madrid’s tactic. I think the deal is set in stone, and it’s just haggling.

Thumb up 2 Thumb down 3

        • Huh?

Are we a male or female in this rather twisted metaphor? Cause it seems from your post now the Italian is a girl as well.

And what’s all this about giving up bumholes?

Thumb up 1 Thumb down 0

  7. We were never in for him anyway. It’s all the result of a misheard conversation.

Get ready instead for us signing PigWayne.

Thumb up 26 Thumb down 2

    • I’d take Lewandowski over Suarez, over Higuain too. Even over Cavani, given their forms and age. But I think we can only remotely interest him if we buy some big names before. Fellaini would be a good start. Let’s face it, the guy is at Dortmund, he’ll only move somewhere he’s assured trophies. Quite unrealistic for us at the moment.

Thumb up 1 Thumb down 1

  8. Arsenal only have themselves to blame I know wenger likes suarez but its a dangerous game relying on that transfer we all know hiw slimey that cuuunnt is. I think all this talk of him being flattered about arsenal is just a ploy to force madrid into action. I hooe we dont end up empty handed with egg on our face and chasing a secondd rate striker as usual. Ps dont tell the taxman I can read or write

Thumb up 21 Thumb down 1

  9. To be honest I getting totally sick & tired of Wenger & Ivan’s procrastination & snail like pace during trnafer periods.. we were 16 massive points behind Epl winners last season & we even gave them guard of honour with that traitor as their leading striker, that ws a double edged sword for me… anyway this is a personal feeling hate it or love it BUT iam NOT spending any money on my team tho it hurts sooooo much I just hav to do it TILL my team spends on signings that will give us a better chance next season.. I am loathing u Ivan for making me feel like this… #COYG

Thumb up 28 Thumb down 5

  10. I know multi-million pound deals are not straightforward etc, but we really do seem to make a fuckin dog’s breakfast of things.

We seem to have a player here that wanted to leave his club, not only that, but seemed like he wanted to join us, which leaves the fee to be agreed.

Now you expect Madrid to be cunts, on the basis that they are cunts. So even if a number was agreed in principle, fully expect them to change it, particularly as fuckin Gobby Gazidis tells everyone how polluted we are with cash.

Going round saying we can now compete for top players means you have to do exactly that – compete.

If Citeh and the Chavs have paid a premium in the past for players because they’re loaded, then other clubs will try and pull the same trick with us now.

So it’s no good then shaking our head and tutting when that happens – put up or shut up. Or, as we’ve done it arse upwards, shut up, then put up.

I’ve personally almost written this deal off as dead, and I don’t think for a minute we’ll get Suarez either.

    Happy fuckin days.

Thumb up 85 Thumb down 0

    • Love Arsene but he is definitely the problem here. Refuses to pay over his valuation for a player, when other clubs will sometimes just bloody do it for the good of the team. It is all looking very worryingly balanced at the moment, when we actually have the cash to tip the scales whatever way we want.

Thumb up 13 Thumb down 7

      • The thing is, I’m not sure this is strictly true given the Ivan has stated that Wenger does not get involved in the transfer negotiations.

Thumb up 3 Thumb down 4

        • It’s definitely Arsene who has the final say on targets and what he considers their value to be. The rest of them haven’t got a clue. Wenger probably isn’t directly involved in negotiations, but if he is it wouldn’t surprise at all.

Thumb up 6 Thumb down 0

        • in the press conference where he started this whole ‘we have all the monies’ crap, gazidas clearly said that we could afford the rooney-type wages and transfer fee IF that was a person that arsene identified as strengthening the team. the final say always rests with arsene (wouldn’t be surprised if he had to ratify chips keswick being appointed chairman).

Thumb up 0 Thumb down 0

      • Even if he does get involved the simple fact is someone at the club should be able to put their foot down and get the player that’ll take us to the next level even if it means spending a couple of millions over the odds.

If we are successful, we’ll recoup the money back anyway, im very worried cos this will be a missed opportunity.

Thumb up 3 Thumb down 0

      • May be it’s about time we, as fans, took a leaf out of Wenger’s book and look at the value of Arsenal tickets?
Paying some of the highest ticket prices in the land to watch a decent team doesn’t seem right does it? When you add into the equation that we have consistently sold our prized players since our move to the Emirates it seems that, quite frankly, we’re being ‘mugged off’
Maybe if we all said, and I quote ‘I see no value in these tickets’ they will take some notice and change the transfer policy at the club and then when we all buy our tickets, and I quote again, ‘we will be like a new signing’

Thumb up 1 Thumb down 0

  11. Hopefully this forces our hand. Higuain made up his mind last summer that he would go, Mourinho convinced him to stay. He won’t go to Chelsea (bc he fell out of favor with Mourinho) or Liverpool (no UCL) and City aren’t after him.

I fully support spending £30-35m on Higuain. The Suarez talk is nonsense. He takes fucking 8.1 shots per goal, is a total ball hog, and gets dispossessed AND turns the ball over more times than any other “top” player.
He isn’t half as clinical as Higuain and he fails most of his dribbles. (

Suarez isn’t anywhere near as clinical as he should be with his talent, and he is a diving, biting, cheating, alleged racist, cunt. If you actually think he would fit in at Arsenal on or off the field, or that Liverpool would sell him to us, or that he would stay in England, OR Arsene would spend £40m on him, you are fucking crazy.

Thumb up 59 Thumb down 0

  12. I just do not understand this. If we are truly about to throw 35M @ suarez, how the flying fuck are we not getting higuain for 27 – 30M?

He gets to play the first 6 games too.

Don’t get me wrong, unlike some people here, I don’t mind having suarez (for dinner). Bt FFS we get a world class striker and save a lot of money. Isn’t that the wenger/arsenal way?

Thumb up 25 Thumb down 0

  13. Am on holiday for almost the whole of August am not going to look at a phone, tv or Internet.
many glasses of wine and beer and gazidis and his bunch of clowns will seem a million miles away. Roll on August and get me away from the misery that is arsenal in a transfer window.

Thumb up 11 Thumb down 1

    • …only for you to arrive straight back to the misery of the Emirates, featuring our new signings, Gareth Barry, Solomon Kalou and Peter Odemwingie.

      Still, enjoy your holiday!

Thumb up 11 Thumb down 1

  14. We should throw in a bid for Adebayor for the criac while were at it..because there is so much bullshit about bids goin around. Was it confirmed we bid for Higuain? No chance we can afford Rooney, let chelski go mad like they did with Torres!

Thumb up 1 Thumb down 0

  15. Gazidas .wenger both out of their depth with big in the past.embarresement every time he speaks.making small bids so they can say they tried. LIARS. WENGER OUT

Thumb up 5 Thumb down 12

  16. “Wenger could miss out on a player still favoured by many fans.”

    Is another way of saying

“Wenger could miss out on a player not fullsomely loathed by most Arsenal fans for their crimes against not only Arsenal but also Civilisation, Gravity, Dentistry, Male Pattern Baldness and Lord Farquaad”

Thumb up 8 Thumb down 0

  17. Liverpool»Suarez» R Madrid/Arsenal

    R Madrid»Higuain»Napoli/Arsenal

    Man Utd»Rooney»Chelsea/PSG

Out of this half possible/half completed merry go around. The only one i can see us completing is Higuain. Case solved…….Damn im good.

Thumb up 4 Thumb down 1

  18. So that’s the end of it then.. Napoli have monies and Argentine players have an affinity for Napoli.

I really felt that we will get a top end striker this summer. After all some many good players were angling for a move this term – Lewandowski, Gomez, Higuain, Cavani, Llorente.. All of these players are now gone\going\not going to happen. Dregs like Suarez and Rooney are still circling around the drain. Both of them very divisive characters and more trouble than they are worth.

Lets just hope that Giroud can improve from last season and Podoloski can push him for the slot.

Thumb up 3 Thumb down 3

  19. Listen. We’re better than Napoli, in a better league, in a better town, we have a higher wageframe and more money. If Higuian goes to Napoli it completely our own fucking fault, cause we have every oppotunity to outscore Napoli. If we don’t sign him, it either because we don’t want him (unlikely) or because our negatiators fucked it up. Don’t wanna hear a word about Real being cunts, they have a top striker and know teams want him, so they go after the highest price. It’s our fault if we cant play that game. Fuck fucking fuck!

Thumb up 27 Thumb down 1

  20. Good you’re a bunch of princesses. You really thought Madrid we’re going to sell him without crafting circumstances to drive up the price? None of us know what’s going on.

As for the people saying ‘just spend the extra 8 mill’… Ffs. You have jobs right? If a supplier ups the price of a product by 30% on a whim you just pay it? Do you fuck.

Thumb up 21 Thumb down 4

    • Fir point but this is Arsenal and we have a tendency to balls transfer dealings up unless of course we are the selling club.

Thumb up 7 Thumb down 1

    • Wrong in this case.

It depends on market supply. There are a very limited number of strikers out there that will add something to our squad. A VERY LIMITED number.

Thus, if we want Higuain, then we have to pay for him. If we offered what was reportedly offered for that total fucking knacker Suarez, Higuain would be enjoying Vietnamese food and meeting his new team mates right now.

Arsene should know how it works – he’s been on the wrong side of it often enough.

Thumb up 18 Thumb down 0

      • Paying an outrageously undue wage to someone, not extremely excellent, just to add number to the striking options will up set the whole team.

Are you sure that Higuain will core 30 goals next season for us?

Thumb up 0 Thumb down 1

    • supply and demand!

We are not negotiating printing costs or rent rates here.

We are signing a world class striker to make us competitive. If it costs a bit more so be it.

It seems Arsenal only know the value of a player when they sell them.

That is what drives me crazy!

Thumb up 14 Thumb down 0

      • I think that the point Dingo is making here is that when Arsenal started negotiations, the asking price was around £25M and as soon as Arsenal & RM had come close to an agreement, the price went up to (reportedly) £27M, then £30M and now £37M.

It may be “Supply and Demand” and not be “negotiating printing costs or rent rates” but surely the buyer should know how much the seller wants BEFORE negotiations start and not after a fee has been ‘agreed in principle’??

Thumb up 1 Thumb down 0

  21. When i say i hate dare not try to make me change my stance.. My hatred for wenger is as far as i could count to the very end of numbers

Thumb up 3 Thumb down 27

    • A marquee signing is only easy if you spend well over the odds.. ala ronaldo to Real…

Neymar took Barca about 4 months to sign
Cesc took over a year to sign for Barca…

Even if the clubs want it the players agent will want to maximise the marqueeness.

Patience… Its not like buying a player who thinks he is lucky to join… you have to build the narrative for them.. Higuain is so ready to leave RM because Arsene Wenger is going to build a team around him…

Wenger needs to buy the crown jewel so he knows what to build around it.. if he gets Higuain say he will probably buy another Argentinian, Suarez he will buy a white supremecist, Argentinian rugby playing plane crash survivor, Rooney he will buy Chiquirito or someother player that looks like an old hooker…

Thumb up 10 Thumb down 1

  22. Just had chat with optimistic mate. He reckons all this talk of Rooney Suarez etc is rues.
We will be so desperate come the end of August that when we sign another unknown Frenchman from ligue 2 arsenal fans will be so happy to have actually made a signing wenger and gazidis will be off the hook yet again.
Happy days. I need a fucking drink.

Thumb up 6 Thumb down 6

    • Lol Voldy. I want to disagree with you but dammit looks that way, especially if the Higuain deal falls through. He makes the most realistic option for “breaking the bank” Arsenal. The rooney/suarez stories it’s just not how Arsene/Arsenal rolls.

      I need a drink aswell.

Thumb up 4 Thumb down 2

  23. Another target lost

Fantastic transfer window, just an under 21 french crock for a signing

times have really changed now and we really got some big signings in haven’t we? just like it was promised.

wonder why people continue to support the current management, they have held us back massively.

Thumb up 5 Thumb down 6

  24. Ivan, stop mincing about like a bald Owen Coyle, put your fuckin trousers back on, get on the phone to that cunt Perez and get this fuckin deal done.

    Now. Move.

    • Righto Mooro, I’m on it now, I’m upping my initial bid of £23m by a further £50. Also keep this hush but the Trevor Benjamin deal is done too.

  25. If Higuain eventually agrees for Napoli then Arsenes job should be evaluated. what is wrong here, the player wants to leave, he does not mind Arsenal. he is world class for relatively good money and last but not least.

  26. I’m still going to remain positive. Well try at least. I just hope when the music stops we’re not the only one without a nice new Striker

Thumb up 1 Thumb down 1

    • The other clubs have ‘world class’ strikers so they will do fine without a ‘New striker’. Check out city and Utd

  27. We’d be crazy to let higuain slip through our fingers. If we do we might be looking at Sir bite-a-lot or Mr Potato head and they are both overpriced and come with too much baggage.

Thumb up 1 Thumb down 0

  28. Lets say we don’t sign anybody by the end of the transfer window, then what? What will be the fans reaction & what difference would it make to the Arsenal management & board

  29. “The only signing of the summer thus far has been Yaya Sanogo on a free from Auxerre, so hopefully Napoli’s interest will force our hand a bit and we can get this deal done.”

Er, no. It looks like this deal may well have collapsed. What a surprise.

This is example #768 of just how useless Wenger is when it come to closing deals. Had David Dein still been at the club then Higuain would have been signed a month ago. But with the Procrastinating Professor at the helm, fucking Real Madrid about, the signing of another top player has turned to dust.

    Fuck him.

With the clock now ticking, it looks like all the quality will be snapped up while Wenger, Gazidis and everybody else at the club are fucking around in the Far East.

We’ll probably end up with Peter Odemwinge as our “stellar signing of the summer”.

Thumb up 13 Thumb down 18

    • Oh, and on Sky Sports News this morning both Theo “nice but dim” Walcott and Olivier Giroud are talking about winning the Premier League this year.

      Yeah, dream on.

With a squad of players like we have?

  30. Could I just respectfully ask that no one makes any ‘witty’ request for Higuain to ‘sign da ting’ , it was shit 6 months ago and gets shitter everytime I hear it.

Thumb up 2 Thumb down 1

  31. I’d be happy for us to make only ONE signing this summer, David Dein!! Take us back to the days when deals got done; as opposed to talked about, written about, talked about some more, then not actually ever done.

Some people have complained that their comments were removed: this is because they looked like they were written by a teenager texting a ‘m8’.

Use real English, NOT text speak. Comments which use text speak will be deleted as soon as we see them.

    Thank you.

    • Your comment is based on the assumption that Dick law and co are expert negotiators out witting their adversaries…. However history has clearly shown they understand the subtleties of the transfer market as well as I understand Norwegian….,which just to be clear I don’t.

  33. I dread to listen to the Emirates atmosphere next season if nobody significent is signed. Poisonous won’t be the word…

Thumb up 7 Thumb down 0

  34. I won’t be surprised if the transfer market closes and the only signing we have made is Sanogo (which was free, like if anyone needed reminding of that)

Thumb up 3 Thumb down 1

  35. Come on Arsenal, this is getting pretty ridiculous. Our only signing so far is a free transfer. If this Higuain deal doesn’t go through, i will not expect any other decent transfer this summer. Get him signed up already before Napoli start waving their Cavani money around, then bring in Krul, Williams and Fellaini and why not go for the Ajax kid, Ericsen, Bergkamp could help with that. Sell Gervinho to Roma or whoever, sell Chamakh and bendtner and get on with it already ffs. All we’ve heard this summer is Arsenal’s 70m ‘war chest’!!! Who does that? You don’t go to the market telling everyone how much you’ve got to spend, you’ll simply set yourself up to be exploited which is exactly what Perez and Swansea any other club/president with a prospective target will do. I really miss the days of David Dein, it seems there’s no one with anything close to his abilities left at the club.

Thumb up 3 Thumb down 1

    • Oh and as far as i’m concerned, this talk of 35m or whatever for Suarez is pure BS, even if Liverpool were to accept a bid, Arsenal will find a way to pull out of it because that is just a futile publicity stunt to appease the fans.

Thumb up 4 Thumb down 1

  36. I don’t know if anyone gives a solitary fuck but we’re 3 – 0 at half time against the Vietnamese. All goals from Giroud. Been playing at a snail’s pace which is understandable but to say 3 – 0 is flattering would be an understatement of insane proportions. Giroud’s second is a screamer though.

Thumb up 1 Thumb down 1

  37. this is obviously why madrid stalled the deal. i’m surprised we’re only up against Napoli to date. The glimmer of hope I have is that Higuain will be attracted to the stability of arsenal, and know he will be number one guaranteed. plus the prem league having the reputation it does – serie A having faltered a bit. his families comments seemed very pro-prem.

realistically napoli are not going to pay him 200k a week. I imagine as high as they are prepared to go in terms of salary package we can match. they obviously have the dough to bump up the transfer fee though. but then again, although not always, the player may simply make up his mind and refuse a move to one or the other, clearing the way for the victor. so we’ll just have to wait and see.

which is ok. we’re good at waiting. and waiting.

Thumb up 1 Thumb down 0

    • i always wonder at times like this though – was Higuain a legitimate target under consideration by Napoli before news of our interest broke, or is it second hand scouting. obviously no-one will admit the latter. certainly not rafa anyway.

  38. Anyone else getting the impression that we might be heading back down that old familiar road called we tried to sign ……(insert any player)…but we just couldn’t quite get ….. Player over the line. We really did try, our very hardest and at least we’ll have shed loads of money left in the bank for the next transfer window. P.s please renew your season tickets now. Love A.F.C….I hope its just me then.

  39. i do hope we are`nt going to get the “bitey racist ” comments all next year if we sign him . its wearing a bit thin now .

  40. Higuain – bored.
    Suarez – bored.
    Rooney – bored.

Wake me up when something happens please.

Thumb up 1 Thumb down 0

  41. To be honest I would love Suarez, but there’s surely no way Liverpool would sell him to a champions league rival (in their view). He’s a dick once he crosses the white line, but he’s a fantastic player. Anyway, not gonna happen.

Higuain is also now a long shot. Bookies reckon it’s about 20-25%.

Another fuck up of a transfer window is a distinct possibility.

Thumb up 1 Thumb down 0

    • Remember when we won 1-0 at Newcastle, and part of the excitement was that we’d be able sign players who wanted to go to a Champions League club, whereas the spuds would be left with the dregs?

That seems like a long time ago right now.

It’s too hot as well. This summer blows!

  42. I found this from commenter ‘chunhow’ on ESPN:

There are sufficient funds available to the manager.’ – Edelman, September 2005.

…the effect means we can spend more on transfers over the next 15 years.’ – Edelman, May 2006.
‘If Arsene came to us and said he wanted to spend £40m on a player we could do that.’ – Edelman, Sept 2007.

‘We remain firmly committed to substantial investment in the playing squad.’ – Chairman Peter Hill-Wood, Sept 2008.
‘We’ve got a substantial amount of money to invest.’ – chief executive Ivan Gazidis, Sept 2009.
‘The club is secure – we have sufficient funds to invest.’ – Gazidis, May 2010.
‘In January and in the summer there will be significant funds available to bolster the team.’ – Gazidis, Sept 2011.
‘All the money we make is available to the manager.’ – Gazidis, May 2012.
‘It’s all about giving us the capability to go to the manager and say “here is the money for you to compete”.’ – Gazidis, June 2013.

    • i.e I will be surprised if Arsenal pick up a big name striker this summer. It will be a major break from the norm for Arsenal…

Thumb up 2 Thumb down 0

      • The issue is and has always been, Arsene cannot handle big world star players. Buys unknown and when they get big, they leave him. Thats why there will be no suarez, higuin or Rooney, Gazardis and the board and Wenger have been and are still lying.

Thumb up 0 Thumb down 1

        • he made vieira stay an extra season till it suited arsenal better (and we clearly had the best of him) he made henry stay (and we clearly had the best of him. Fabregas wanted to go earlier and his departure wasn’t wengers fault. nasri was a greedy cunt, reyes a baby. we’ve got good deals for the players we’ve released, most of which on our terms. van persie was painful but he behaved poorly and arsene had to close the door on him. all in all you cannot critisize the manager.

where are problems seem to lie is bringing in players that are coveted by other clubs. we had no real competition for arshavin (at the time considered world class after a dazzling run for russia) or cazorla or podolski – some of the more established players we’ve signed. it seems anytime there are counter bids we don’t even retaliate, just quickly exit the deals.

my understanding is wenger tells the executive team ‘i want higuain’, and their job is to get him. after all the very un-arsenal public statements of both cash-piles and targets, we still don’t seem to have the commitment to doing what needs to be done to close out the deal.

In saying that Real seem to be happy to let Higuain go. he seems to want to go, but they are trying to make arsenal or anyone interested pay over the odds to cover their other huge expenditures on players, which is bullshit. £30m is plenty for higuain, who is a real talent, but they can hardly claim he is worth more when they never fucking used him in the first place. but to counter that, arsenal would have to ask themselves, who else do we go for, who will improve the team? with that in mind i think they should concede to madrids childish valuation and realise that in this case, paying an extra £5-8m would definitely still be in arsenals interests.

Thumb up 1 Thumb down 0

  43. great now we have a competitor, we definately blew our chances. it seems like the team including mr.wenger likes to shoot themselves in the foot.

Thumb up 1 Thumb down 0

  44. …and there goes Jovetic to Man City…..Where the @#$@ are these FFP rules?!?!?! How much have Man City spent so far this summer? Nothing has changed. The richer the owner, the more you can spend, buy and win. Doesn’t make for very enjoyable football, when the level of competition gap widens even further. Even with a supposed nest egg to spend, I worry for the future.

Thumb up 0 Thumb down 0

    • Sometimes it feels like we do other clubs scouting for them. Frustrating. This could be the worst summer for ages. This time I actually thought we were going to go for it.

There’s still time for cynics to be proven wrong, but will there still be players there to buy?!

Thumb up 0 Thumb down 0

  45. i don’t think we need new strikers really. the team lacks worldclass defenders and defensive midfielders. up front between giroud poldi santi walcott and the ox if he steps up we can score. and we did last season and not relying on a one striker is a force. we should go big for fellaini,( we fucking missed paulinho!) we should bid for the likes of luz gustavo, williams , juilo cesar, baines. it’s less flashy but we will definitively improve.
