Wenger hails ‘top quality’ Ozil

Wenger hails ‘top quality’ Ozil

Arsene Wenger has spoken of his admiration for Mesut Ozil after capturing the German international from Real Madrid in a club-record deal.

Revealing that he has kept tabs on the 24-year-old midfielder for quite some time, the boss also took the opportunity to pay tribute to the team of negotiators who’ve worked on the club’s first and only major deal of the summer.

“We are extremely pleased to have signed Mesut Ozil,” the boss told Arsenal.com.

“He is a great player, with proven quality at both club and international level. We have watched and admired him for some time as he has all the attributes I look for in an Arsenal player.

“I have said throughout the summer that we have been working hard to bring in top quality players to this football club. This has involved many many people across the Club and I have always had the full support of the Club in making decisions on the football side.

“Mesut is a top quality footballer who will be a fantastic addition to our talented squad. We are all looking forward to him joining up with us after his international matches with Germany and working with us as an Arsenal player.”

Speaking from Germany where he is on international duty, Ozil spoke excitedly about embarking on a new chapter of his career at the Emirates.

“I am thrilled to be joining a club of the stature of Arsenal and am looking forward to playing in the Premier League. It will be great for my own personal development as a player and I am particularly looking forward to working with Arsène Wenger.

“From our negotiations it is clear the Club has huge ambition and I look forward to being part of an exciting future.”
Rather oddly, Ivan Gazidis, rather than let the signing speak for itself, also felt the need to use confirmation of the deal as the moment to offer support to chairman Stan Kroenke’s ‘vision’ for the club.

Speaking with a tone that can be described as defensively bullish, the CEO stated:

“This is an exciting day for all of us. We have signed a world-class player who is one of Europe’s brightest young talents.

“Mr Kroenke, our controlling owner, has always fully supported Arsène and the Club in making significant investments to strengthen our squad and to bring in talented players who fit our style and ambitions.

“Like all of us, Mr Kroenke wants to see Arsenal winning titles and trophies and he has absolute faith and belief in our manager to achieve that. We will continue to work towards that goal and look forward to an exciting season.”

Özil will wear the number 11 shirt.

        • Sir balls, do one!

Yes still needed a striker but mou was being all cuntish about it. dangling him infront of us then refusing in the last possible moment, leaving us with little time to get an alternative. I fucking despise MOURINHO, not a good guy to do business with and I hope clubs realise that in the future.

Oh and finally, we signed mesut fucking ozil!!!!!!

        • @goonerdal, spot on, man, I cannot express how much of a cunt that Mourinho is. The anti-football player-hoarding fuck has the gumption to try and suggest that its regressive for Manchester United to hold back Rooney because the concept of ‘title rivals’ is outdated and then refuses to LOAN his FOURTH choice central striker (and they only play one).

Perversely, I’m so, so happy, because that cunt loaning to Everton and not to us means he’s gotten the shits worse than Wilshere on Sunday about our chances this season. Fucking hypocunt.

I’m sorry, sorry, this is a happy thread…. BEHOLD THE WIZARD OF OZIL! :D :D :D

If you knew anything, one fucking iota, about football, you would know how unbelievably stupid your comment is.

Thumb up 55 Thumb down 3

        • @jack jack jack – aside from the obvious of Ozil easily being one of the best players in the world, this is a great advertisement for other stars to come to Arsenal. I always felt we just needed to sign one to get the others coming. Other players will now see the ambition and look to join. Great signing and I’m sure a CF will come in January as a result. COYG

Thumb up 119 Thumb down 4

        • We got a dm (Flamini), we got a keeper (Viviano) – not sure we needed a winger – a striker would have been nice. But also,

Thumb up 50 Thumb down 2

        • Do we really need a striker with Ozil in the balance? with Ozil playing #11, Cazorla on the left wing – all of a sudden, Podolski is free to play in the center, which he can most certainly do, especially with the likes of Ozil feeding him. Walcott plays a similar role to Ronaldo at RM so hopefully Ozil and him strike up a fairly quick partnership, etc.

Either way – as the strategy columnist writes, the plan seems to be coming together. Incredibly exciting!

        • We could have done with another striker but what Ozil’s signing has done has added goals and potency to the team so maybe it is a better signing then a striker. A player who can score and create- best stars for assists in europe- assisters are revered over here at the Emirates.

Giroud will be great this season and for the last few years we have played with one striker anyway pretty much – or rather relied on one. Now we have a striker to rely on, one of the worlds best midfielders to rely and another in Santi and the blossoming Jack too. Not bad.

Also for the way we play and the team Ozil will operate more like Bergkamp who was labelled a striker but was so much more, the way he made our frontmen look good is something we have never had since.

That and the fact Podolski will more than likely pushed upfront more often now means we are not threadbare in that are.

We have tried to buy strikers up until the last minute- Higuain is the one that was a silly saga but would you take him or Ozil? An interesting question indeed but Barca Spain and maybe now Madrid have shown that they can be devastating without an out and out striker.

Atleast this should be enough for the next four months until the window opens again. I hope Sanogo is able to make an impact and TGSTEL is there if need be. Is Park still ours?

Thumb up 32 Thumb down 2

        • Sir balls is NEVER on the mark! He’s a trolling fucker who sits there refreshing the arseblog news page looking to get an early “bullshit” comment on here to annoy and piss off the majority of arsenal fans!

i agree with you about we could of done with a centre half but look at the ones who have moved clubs this summer… None of them would of improved on what we have in the excellent kos and per.

and in regards to the world class striker i agree that Arsene missed a trick with higuain but looking at Giroud i think we are more than fine there. I think in january we will bring in a striker and centre half but until then we should be more than fine.

i for one am over the moon with the ozil signing and would prefer him to a mediocre CB and backup striker. This signing sends a message to our rivals and Ozils words about the ambition Wenger showed should silence a few people.

although i doubt it will ever silence a troll who sits under a bridge with nothing better in his life than to get record amounts of dislikes….. Sad

Thumb up 2 Thumb down 1

    • I would like to personally thank the Spurs for selling their best player to the RM, so we can land Mesut Ozil.

Now have a great season, Spurs fans. Soldado is not worth anything close to whatever you paid for him. He won’t score another goal unless it’a another penalty kick.

Thumb up 51 Thumb down 1

      • And to think we would have taken Soldado at one point if us fans had our way- purely because were stressed and wanted anything but credit to Wenger for waiting and the foresight to know Madrid would need to sell and for convincing the player to sign, which Ozil alluded to in his statement. A striker, a very attacking midfielder , a very ferocious mature midfielder and an experienced Keeper not a bad window. Even Wenger would privately admit that he wanted ( maybe could have) done more but then he looks at United and does that smirk of his.

The best feeling of all is that the Squad is improved and Ozil is not a replacement signing but an addition and finally we have someone who can score and take free kicks very well. He will boost the team boost the feeling around the club and like the good old days teams will be shitting their pants when they line up next to us.

Just trying to imagine the link up play with him and Santi is arousing.

I feel content about the team not hopeful like in the last few years. Bring ‘em all on. Arsenal are back. NO ONE will play how we will this season. Lethal

José Mourinho also stated that, “He is the best number 10 in the world. Everyone loves him and sees a bit of Luis Figo and Zinedine Zidane in him.

Ruud Gullit labelled German Özil as a “technically perfect” player who has “total control of the ball” and has “great imagination”

Wish we signed some defensive players but fuck it, we have Ozil.

Thumb up 37 Thumb down 1

    • That’s not a bad transfer window. We got a defensive midfielder, an experienced keeper to challenge Sczezney, and one of the best creative players on the planet. I would’ve liked a striker and a defender too but fuck me, Ozil. Wenger delivered. That little smile was vindicated!

Thumb up 57 Thumb down 1

  15. I cannot believe this! After quite possibly the worst summer transfer window ever, Wenger pulls out this gem. We should all be ashamed for having ever doubted him. I would say with one decent defender signing we will have the quality and depth to challenge for the title. Extremely excited to see Ozil in action and watch the gunners play this season. I expect big things from the arsenal this season. Can’t wait!!!

Thumb up 44 Thumb down 4

    • I’m over the moon about this signing, yet I still doubt Wenger. One signing in the area which this team was strongest. We needed signings all over the team. Let’s hope we’re lucky and don’t get too many injuries and that none of our players experience a drop in form because on the bench we’ve got teenagers and Bendtner. Bendtner for fucks sake.

Our first 11 can beat anyone, but I don’t think our squad has the depth to go the distance. We had all summer and tons of resources, while Ozil is a top, top, top signing it does not make up for nor address what a complete mess of a transfer season this has been and what seems to be an increasing deluded Arsene Wenger. Say what you will and thumb me down but let’s talk again in May.

So fucking glad the transfer window is shut, let’s play some football (in two weeks…fucking interlulls)

Thumb up 35 Thumb down 39

      • I think your right neutral, I honestly think we needed a couple more, we are a bit short at this moment of having a very strong ‘squad’. I do moreover like your approach at saying your a bit down about the wider scope of things, unlike that angry sensationalist ‘Sir Balls’, stick to your opinion, most are worthy.
That said, we have to smile at Ozil hey :)

Thumb up 23 Thumb down 2

      • While logic would say the right thing to do was to buy a few good players in each area of the pitch, Barcelona have shown that having an amazing attacking midfield alone can achieve great things. We probably now have the most dynamic and interchangeable midfield in the league when all are fit. Many of the players in the squad are also very versatile so can cover for each other and reduce the effects of injuries. Only concern is who will cover for Giroud if he gets injured.

Thumb up 14 Thumb down 1

        • Put walcott up top and tell him to wait for the through balls. With Ozil, Rosicky, Cazorla (and 2 of Ramsey/Wilshere/Arteta) behind we don’t need a target man when we can pass around and through any midfield and defense.

Thumb up 15 Thumb down 1

      • Nothing comes instantly. You build teams piece by piece. Look at Bayern, that’s the way they built their current team, bit by bit. Nobody wants another average player on the books for 3 years. We’re waiting for the right striker to become available – a loan stop-gap like Ba would have been great, but that wanker Mourinho thwarted us. In the mean time, let’s hope Giroud has a superhuman, Henry-like constitution and plays 50 games a year for the next 7 seasons.

Thumb up 37 Thumb down 1

        • That’s a fine point Jack, but do recall – that was the plan, that’s why the haemorrhage of talent has so depressed us and indeed Le Boss. Despite what you think of the individuals now – Fabregas, Song, Nasri, Adebayor, Van Persie were supposed to be the core of the team that was being built.
That’s why I will never forgive them, they must have known, they went with the money.

Thumb up 9 Thumb down 1

      • “increasing deluded Arsene Wenger”

        The fucking cheek.

Thumb up 15 Thumb down 1

        • There are two options here, Arsene has been deluded every season when he claims we are strong enough to challenge for titles while everybody else says we are not, or he is just a liar. Regardless he does not need to make such claims (in public, sure the team might need a confidence boost).

Take a look at Amy Lawrences recent interview where Wenger say he does not want a director of football because if a signing does not work out Wenger will get the blame but if it does work out the director of football will get all the credit. Basically Wenger does not want this person because he is putting his own ego above the good of the club.

Wenger talks complete nonsense and I doubt that Ozil was the plan. Wenger bought whichever of Di Maria, Benzema, or Ozil Madrid was willing to sell, and good thing no one else go there first.

That said, I am ecstatic about Ozil and I hope he does transform the team, I can’t believe Arsenal signed him ahead of other clubs and that Madrid even sold him.

Thumb up 3 Thumb down 9

        • Or option 3 he’s been let down by certain players he put 100% faith in who turned their back on him and club leaving gaps in a team he thought capable of winning titles… that can’t be easy to navigate through! So maybe he was just trying to build the fans up to get behind the team he was left with and (like you said @neutral) give confidence to those players as well.

I go and watch arsenal and I’ve seen good days and bad days but it’s never boring and we do have some great players to watch, I’m excited every time I see Cazorla on the pitch for example.

I seems to me the transfer market is so turbulent it must be near enough impossible to actually have a ‘plan’. Can’t Imagine Moyes’ summer went to plan! So when Ozil became available we should be happy we have a man of the stature of Wenger to bring a player of that class in.

There’s clearly a bunch of fuckwit managers in clubs who have the megabucks, like Mourinho and Chelsea, who just go around fucking everyone else’s plans up (and why would’t they I guess) but it must make it very hard! Perhaps now with this type of signing the perception of us will be that we are getting back to our invincible-era best? I don’t know… I’m just really excited for the future!!

I think right now if people aren’t excited they should think about getting a new hobby!

Thumb up 0 Thumb down 0

        • You take the same information as everyone else, and come up with completely different conclusions. That either makes you a genius or a complete moron.

I know where I’m putting my money.

Thumb up 3 Thumb down 0

        • Well none of us really knows what Wenger thinks, I just can’t accept a man so experienced and having had so much success in the past as being ‘delusional’! He lives for football it seems so I imagine will have known what his team has been capable of!

So I guess you could call it ‘lying’ or perhaps his way of managing it is the reason why we’ve been so consistent at getting into the champions league. Which btw I agree is only a bare minimum. A less short-sighted view of things might suggest we are on the up now and set for many years of success?

I dunno, just suggesting a point of view!

        • Oh sorry, my mistake…as you were :)

Thumb up 0 Thumb down 0

      • Barring a terrible stroke of bad luck with injuries I think we will be ok. As far as a defensive midfielder is concerned Ramsey has been doing a good job and i think Arteta could struggle to get back into the side when he’s fit. We also have Flamini who can slot in there and can also cover most defensive positions as well. Sagna can cover at CB when needed. We have 2 quality left backs, Jenkinson is playing well on the right and now another keeper to push Scez and Fab. Our midfield now looks awesome and up front we have Walcott and Podolski as cover for Giroud and Sanogo. Plus we have some exciting talent on the bench to come through. Fair enough we didn’t sign some of the big players we were linked with but fuck it we got Mesut Ozil who is bigger than any of us had dared to hope for. If you think about it we are now in good shape, certainly better than people give us credit for. Arsene done well, the future’s bright.

Until then, I’m a super happer gooner :-D

Thumb up 12 Thumb down 3

    • Edu's fake passport

We don’t need a world class CB we already have Kos & Per with Vermaelen on the bench & Sagna just in case.

Thumb up 12 Thumb down 1

  29. Excellent, excellent signing, easily the signing of the Summer for the EPL. He’s a top talent and it’s incredible we’ve got him.

But… ah… I don’t want to sound negative when I’m really happy we seem to have a great signing. But I just get the feeling we’re still one or two players short – a defender, maybe, or a striker… I don’t know. Bit late to worry about that now.

That’s just me being a misery. A fantastic (and largely unexpected) signing, and with some luck, fewer injuries and a little cohesion, we really could take the BPL by the balls this season.

    Welcome to Arsenal, Mesut.

Thumb up 33 Thumb down 1

  30. Welcome Home Ozil, this is where you belong, where your talent will be appreciated, I nicknamed him already (O’Zeal) meaning ‘Our Zeal’ to win trophy is Here.
    Thank You Arsene,
2 – Numbers of time I’ve said that since Sunday.

  31. Brilliant quote from BBC commentator.

Podolski on the left, Walcott on the right, Cazorla, Wilshere and Ozil in the middle? Good luck getting the ball back off that lot.

Thumb up 51 Thumb down 1

    • Quite obviously BBC forgot Arteta, Flamini and Ramsey.;)

Thumb up 26 Thumb down 1

      • Do you blame them? It’s is an awesome midfield which can combine in all sorts of different ways.. Just Awesome.

Thumb up 10 Thumb down 1

      • And you are forgetting the little Mozart.
I don’t know if it is an actual observation or just out of excitement, but, we sold Gervinho and brought in the best midfielder (arguably) in the world. So, we have 7 word class midfielders right now; actually 8, since Arsene sees Ox’s correct position to be in the midfield. Anyone else seeing us moving towards a 4-4-2 with Walcott, Poldi and Giroud rotating in front???

Thumb up 7 Thumb down 1

    • Don’t forget Rosicky. Our midfield can compete with any club in the world and win.

  35. Great signing in ozil but very surprised there is no alternative to giroud. Ba as a last min deal highlights how much this summer had been done on a whim. Flamini and ozil superb but we needed more, alot more

Thumb up 8 Thumb down 12

  36. Massive signing! That really seem to be where we are going. Outscoring the opposition. Cant wait to see Santi and Ozil on the same pitch. Have we finally replaced Cesc? I hope so. Although would have liked an additional striker but its alright I guess. Come on you Gunners! And welcome to Mesut Ozil!

Thumb up 12 Thumb down 1

  37. Awesome I won’t have to buy him on FIFA14!!!! Well played Arsene. Great feeling to see a world class player join the Arsenal!!!

Thumb up 11 Thumb down 1

  38. 99 problems but being a Gooner aint one.

Wenger still has abit of magic left..Despite his trophy failure all players who sign with us always specifically mention how they look foward to working with wenger…
World class striker in JAN and a trophy will follow.

Thumb up 23 Thumb down 2

  39. The morons in the press are hailing this as “best Arsenal signing since Robin van Persie”. RVP was a fucking youth prospect when we signed him for peanuts. This is the best signing since Dennis motherfuckin’ Bergkamp, kids.

I think Ozil might add more depth than we realise to the squad. It’s quite possible Wenger considers Lukas Podolski as Giroud’s back-up (while remaining, I hope, first choice on the left wing when fit), leaving an extremely tasty, adaptable midfield to choose from.

The worry remains at CB/RB – but que sera on that front. I’m on cloud nine for now.

Thumb up 64 Thumb down 2

  40. Everyone knows that attack is the best form of defence.

Thumb up 13 Thumb down 3

Thumb up 9 Thumb down 3

  42. Happy, happy, happy! I know Wenger said he was wanting to add quality, well he did that! I still can’t get my head around it. He should get Knighted. Well done Sir Arsene.

Today was a long day, and well worth the wait in my opinion.

Thumb up 15 Thumb down 1

  43. Cracking signing, genuinely exciting and surely sets the tone for deals going forward. Flamini now looks a clever signing!

A CF to assist Giroud would have been great but that could happen in January..I’m off to bed so I can touch myself…

Thumb up 18 Thumb down 1

  44. One quality player signed, he gets a big injury and we are again fucked, this has not been a great summer of transfers. We had the funds to make a massive statement and ad to the hard working lads and we are again going to struggle. Sign another striker you stupid cunt.

Thumb up 4 Thumb down 52

    • Bareth Gale could get injured after a 80 fucking million something pound transfer. 7 +£100 million pound spuds can still be inferior to Arsenal. The real identity of Jack-The-Ripper can be revealed by lost DNA evidence. Britain can still win Eurovision (not really).

More assists can unlock Walcott, Podolski, Giroud, Sanogo etc. The rigid system can be made flexible with decent AM. Players will want to play alongside the likes of Özil, Caz etc

Thumb up 8 Thumb down 1

  45. Our own Zidane , Mesut Özil !! (because hes just that good )

Thumb up 4 Thumb down 1

  49. The Flamini free transfer was a clever bit of business. Excellent defensive midfielder and if we’d paid 10 million for him it would have been considered a very good signing. Getting him on a free completely devalued it however.

Signing Ozil was an unbelievable big of business, if he does play in a position that we seem to be well covered in.

Don’t get me wrong, I’m happy with those 2 but feel underwhelmed over all. Wenger has been clearly in for a proven 20 gial a year striker all summer and yet nothing, and are we sufficiently covered at Centre Back?

Thumb up 15 Thumb down 2

    • Edu's fake passport

But it’s nigh on impossible to find a striker that will get you 20 gial’s these days. No one has come close since Lord Wilmington the third in 1896.

Thumb up 3 Thumb down 2

  50. Can’t imagine anyone is more ecstatic than Giroud. All he needs to do is remain standing and he’ll have passes to tee off left, right and center.

Thumb up 16 Thumb down 1

  51. Arsene lets gervinho move to roma who let lamela move to tottenham who let bale move to real madrid who let ozil move to arsenal.

Is that the domino effect wenger was talking about?

Thumb up 46 Thumb down 1

  52. Vorsprung durch Technik!

Thumb up 4 Thumb down 1

  53. We needed a keeper – Won’t pretend I know anything about this Italian dude but we have a keeper.

We needed a more defensive minded midfielder – Flamini could prove a masterstroke if he stays fit.

We needed more creativity – Arsene only went and signed Mesut Ozil!!!!! nuff said.

A striker would have been nice but I’m assuming Cazorla will move out wide to accommodate Ozil and Pod will hopefully be back soon, so we actually do have another striking option…….who knows what January could bring…..

A CB would have been lovely too but Sagna it turns out is pretty immense in that position, TV will return soon and hopefully show his class and Flamini + Ramsey can fill in at full back in needed. But anyway we signed Mesut Ozil!!!
I just wanna type it again and again we just signed Mesut Ozil!!!

I dunno what the fuck happened these last three months but this is fucking brilliant. Thank you Arsene.

Thumb up 43 Thumb down 2

    • Btw yeah there are still problems: This team can confound us in both good and bad ways, they need to show more consistency. There are still question marks over the way the manager physically, mentally and tactically prepares the team, Arsene needs to change his attitude towards the FA and Capital One Cup, this summer has been a mess; Arsene ain’t fooling anyone if he attempts to come out and say he wanted Ozil all along, a world class striker would be excellent etc etc

But for during this Interwhogivesacrap 2 weeks let us gloriously bask in the glow of what has to be the best signing of any English club in this transfer window.

Thumb up 3 Thumb down 5

    Fucking Spuds . . .

Thumb up 1 Thumb down 2

  58. Well we have spent some money. And he is top top quality.

But the absense of a striker and the ‘threat’ of Bendtner is a worry.

But what really causes hackles to rise is Gazedis’s cringe worthy statement with his emphatic
namecheck of “Mr. Kronke”. I couldn’t have been the only person who read that and whinced.

Since when have we been asked in the past to go down on our knees and thank the main Director
for a key signing ? We certainly weren’t asked to do so when we sign Malcolm McDonald and I don’t
    even recall it with Sol.

But now we have to worship at the Shrine of Stan so make sure you polish those toupees – hard.

Thumb up 13 Thumb down 3

    • Arsene's Hot Thighs

Whether you agree with it or not, this is a big PR stunt/statement and I would have expected Gazidis and Kroenke to milk it for all that it’s worth

Thumb up 2 Thumb down 0

Thumb up 0 Thumb down 0

  61. Walcott and Poldi can play back up to Giroud – and we have a midfield packed with international world class talent that can get goals. Especially with the 4-2-3-1 formation.

I’d prefer €42m on one world class player that can win a game for you and scare the shit out of defenders than the equilivant on two good to average players. We can only field 11 players remember!!

Thumb up 16 Thumb down 0

  62. I’m not going to lie. Marvelous signing and wearing Number 11. It would be nice to have a someone to fill that Number 9 shirt though.

Thumb up 0 Thumb down 5

  63. Pretty unimpressed with the lack of a striker to support Giroud. I suppose he can play theo or poldi there if it comes to that. For me, still a signing or two short. But ozil coming in will give the squad a huge boost for the season. Training ground should be buzzing. Forgot that flamini didn’t look too shabby either vs spurs… He’s technically a 10-20mil player who we got for free.

Thumb up 11 Thumb down 1

    • Only down side.

We could have done with a striker.

Not sure what the thinking is here. evidently Wenger shifted priority to the creative player when Higuain and Sahin look difficult which makes sense.

Lack of top quality strikers is the issue. Soldao is not the sort of caliber we want.

Leandro may have been an interesting choice but his handlers may be a little deluded as to his worth.

With the Falcao situation still unresolved, worth keeping tabs till January if they need to do a Santi.

Meanwhile, we have to rely on Sanogo as third choice behind Giroud and Podolski.

Thumb up 1 Thumb down 1

  64. the signing that mean arsenal is now ambitious once again. The next few transfer window will make easy for us to get player .No doubt striker around europe will say “i want to play with carzola and fucking Ozil too ” . I

Some good mediocre additions mind you.

Thumb up 3 Thumb down 0

  66. You lot must be smoking the same shit as the Mugsmashers director, one player of quality and we are fucked all over the rest of the squad. Injuries, suspensions and all the other bad reffing decisions, our squad I’d thread bare and Wenger is totally to blame.

Thumb up 1 Thumb down 32

    • Hmm apart from Striker, we have cover everywhere :

      1) CF – Giroud, (Podolski) thin.

      2) LW – Podolski, Santi, (Gnabry, Miyaichi, Ozil, Rosicky)

      3) RW – Walcott, Chamberlain, (Santi, Ozil)

      4) AM – Ozil, Jack, Rosicky

      5) CM – Ramsey, jack (Zelalem, Flamini)

      6) DM – Arteta, Ramsey, Flamini

      7) RB – Sagna, Jenkinson, (Flamini)

      8) LB – Gibbs, Monreal, (Vermaelen)

      9) CB – Per, Koscielny, Vermaelen (Sagna)

      10) GK – Szsc, Viviano

Unless you’re thick, I’d say we’re not as thin as you think.;)

Thumb up 35 Thumb down 1

      • Walcott has played CF too last year. You forgot about Sanogo. Give the boy half a season to develop and who knows what could happen. Fabianski too for keeper. He started to look good in that spell at the end of last season.

Thumb up 7 Thumb down 1

        • Yeah I did not want to mention Sanogo.

I don’t think Walcott is suited for CF.

Sanogo maybe but it is a bit of a risk given his experience level. But he should feature as third choice (unless, god forbid we really are serious about Bendtner)

More likely Wenger is waiting to see how the January transfer window shapes up.

Falcao is still an unsettled issue at Monaco and could do a Santi.

Thumb up 0 Thumb down 1

        • TGSTEL…..play him a few games, let Santi and Ozil make him look sooo much better than he actually is, sell in January, and maybe actually get some money for him.

Thumb up 0 Thumb down 0

    • Injuries, suspensions and bad reffing decisions can happen to any team, how is that the managers fault? So we shouldn’t have got Ozil then? should have spent the money on 10 average players to make sure we have plenty of cover by your way of thinking. Some people are never happy. We just spent £42m on a world class player for fuck sake. We have a very versatile squad now with a lot of players who can play in different positions. If you bother to look I think you will find we are pretty well covered everywhere, even with the injuries we currently have.

Thumb up 11 Thumb down 0

  67. Never in doubt.

Quite obviously some people have major egg on their face including Hansen, Redknapp and the entity known as espn soccernet staff.

So what have we learnt this summer? :

    1) Wenger is a miser and won’t spend 42.3m quid on a single player!

    2) Wenger will F up a signing like he did with Capoue and Gustavo.

    3) Kroenke won’t let Arsene spend a penny.

    4) Ozil is worth half of Gareth Bale and Madrid have done incredible business

    5) Powershift in North London. Spurs have shown great ambition with 100m and 7 decidedly average players.

    6) None of the Spurs team can walk into the Arsenal team bar lloris (and maybe Soldado as he seems reasonably good at taking penalties)

    7) Wenger has no one to track back minus of course Ramsey, Arteta and Flamini, absolutely no one. Well done BBC, brilliant point.

    8) Wenger needs to concentrate on a leaky defense which was the second best in allowing the least goals in last season.

    9) Wenger has no Cbacks minus Per, Koscielny, Vermaelen and Sagna. We are thin as a thick ice sheet.

    10) We still need strikers, unless of course you consider LALNS TGSTEL.

So what was all the histrionics about again? Care to refresh my memory?

  68. Watching a compilation video of Ozil, and saw a comment by a user called “peertjuh92″, who wrote the following comment:

“I don’t get why Madrid fans are hating on us Arsenal fans. As if we were responsible for the transfer deal. If I’m not mistaken, it’s your chairman who spent a ridiculous amount of money on Gareth Bale. It’s your chairman who didnt mind selling your best player of the last couple of years to Arsenal. It’s your chairman who agreed to get rid of him for a measly 42 million pounds. Enjoy “the Welsh Wizard”. Shots from 35 yards out instead of through balls and assists.
    Kind regards,

    Every gooner”

    The last sentence. Brilliant.

Thumb up 13 Thumb down 0

    • Madrid Bought Bale for double Ozil’s price to us, evidently they did a brilliant piece of business for a bloke that scored but 7 more goals than Walcott but registered less than half his assists.

Good luck Cronaldo without Ozil’s support.

meanwhile as I mentioned previously, Lots of crowing about the Powershift in north London by members of the press, Redknapp, Hansen….well they blew their wad off prematurely.

Spurs spent 100m on players who are good but not of the Calibre that the Gunners could attract.

Wenger decidedly to forgo Suarez (and the headache he would have likely brought) and instead invest the sum on a creative player. He realized in pursuing Higuain that Ozil may also come available.

Patience is a virtue as is the propensity not to panic. that’s why he earns his money and most here are armchair pundits.

Only issue is we could have done with a striker but otherwise a very good transfer window for us.

Forget powershift in north London, powershift in the PL.;)

Thumb up 18 Thumb down 1

    • Also, everyone seems to be worrying about the fact we didn’t sign a striker or a CB. The fact of the matter is, if Giroud gets injured, we have Sanogo, Walcott and Podolski who can fill in and do a decent job.

If Walcott and Podolski are required to fill in for the striker role, we have enough quality midfield players to fill their vacant spots. The Ox, Cazorla, Ozil, Rosicky can all do a fine job on the wings, provided our tactics may have to slightly change to a more passing strategy.

Defensive midfielder? We could do with a tall muscular black guy but we’re not crying out for one. The fact of the matter is that Ramsey, Arteta, Wilshere & Flamini are all capable of playing in the center of the park and doing a fine job. And remember, defending is a team job, it isn’t all down to one man.

As for center backs, we could of done with one, but I think Arsene knew we had utility players in Ramsey and Flamini, and I’m content with that.

He’s brought in decent competition for Szcezny, so that’s sorted.

On top of all of this, we have a bunch of promising youngsters. Zaelem, Gnabry, Ryo, Frimpong*.

And we’ve shown the world we can beat the spuds even if they went ahead and spent £100m+.

Our manager and board may have left it til late, but with the purchase of OZIL, a player of his calibre, that we have intent. No more are we a selling club.

We’ve restored some fucking pride, and now it’s onwards and upwards. COYG.

Thumb up 11 Thumb down 2

      • Yeah, we have some outstanding prospects who should also feature :

2 players in each position plus a contingency back up :

        1) CF – Giroud, Podolski (Sanogo)
        2) RW – Walcott, Chamberlain (Ozil, Santi)
        3) LW – Santi, Podolski (Gnabry/Ryo, Rosicky)

        4) AM – Ozil, Jack (Rosicky)
        5) CM – Jack, Ramsey (Flamini, Zelalem)
        6) DM – Arteta, Ramsey,Flamini

        7) RB – Sagna, Jenks, (Flamini)
        8) CB – Per, Koscielny, TV, (Sagna)
        9) LB – Gibbs, Monreal (TV)

        10)GK – Szsc, Viviano, (Fabianski)

To me (accept in the striker position) this seems a great balance between experience and real cover and some space to develop the more promising young players.

Not sure why some still moan about us being thin in defense and want 5 more players.

We keep the powder dry till January and await the outcome of the Falcao situation IMO.

  71. At just gone 11 pm on Transfer Deadline Day, I’m surprised and disappointed at the same time.

Firstly, I’d like to say that the signing of Mesut Ozil is a great one. He’s a world-class player who would walk into any club side on the planet. In his position, attacking midfield, we already have some great talent, but Ozil will make us even better. The most important aspect of this signing is the message that it sends out: that Arsenal Football Club are prepared to spend serious money in order to bring one of the best players in the world to our club.

But, like I said, I’m disappointed too.

A week ago, anybody looking logically and dispassionately at the club could see that we had the following squad weaknesses:

    1. A lack of a top-quality striker: one who could score 25-30 goals a season.

    2. The need for a Patrick Vieira-type defensive midfielder who could shield the back four.

    3. The need for a first-rate goalkeeper who could challenge or even replace Szczesny.

    4. A centre-half to replace the departed Djourou and provide cover for the injured Vermaelen.

    5. The need for 4 or 5 decent squad players to replace the deadwood who had gone.

But apart from Ozil we’ve signed an Italian Goalkeeper whom I’ve never heard of, and a 20-year-old injury-prone French kid. And we’ve got Flamini back on a free.

Nowhere near enough for what we need this coming season.

Our first eleven are very decent, and, as I’ve said, Ozil will make us much better. But the lack of strength in depth will hurt us as the season progresses. One look at the bench on Sunday against Spurs would tell you everything you need to know. And the lack of that killer striker (should have been Higuain or Suarez) will mean that we will probably draw many games that we should win.

With four fronts to fight on it’s gonna be very interesting to see the team-sheets for certain games, especially the League and FA Cups. Wenger will have to rely on the kids for those matches – which will be a shame as they are the cups that we are most likely to win. He can’t afford to overplay the big stars.

The Ozil signing is very exciting – but I’m still disappointed.

Thumb up 5 Thumb down 32

    • No need.

Only short fall is the striker.

      1) DM – yeah a tall bruising DM would be useful but unless you haven’t been paying attention, 3 tall DM types were useless against our midfield just recently. We have been playing a midfield rotating 3 with no DM. Flamini covers Arteta and the emerging Ramsey. I don’t want to mention Diaby but we can wait to add a tall player down the line.

      2) CB – Again, we have Per, Koscielny, TV. Flamini move is brilliant as it is free and covers RB as well, leaving Sagna to surrogate as 4th choice until we can find a good young defender or assess Miquel on loan later down the line. Again no need.

      3) Keeper. You’ll be hard press to find someone wanting to come in as second choice to SZSC. Viviano move makes sense as he is on loan for a year with option to buy at a fixed price.

      4) We already have a big squad. We don’t need 4-5excess players which will not allow some of our younger players to develop and not allow us to load on next time round.

We have at least 3-4 players to cover every position bar striker (unless you of course count TGSTEL, Sanogo and the one Parked on the bench permanently)

Thumb up 3 Thumb down 1

    • I’d disagree with you regarding the keeper – Szcz is very much a quality GK, all we needed there was someone who could work as a mentor to the two Poles, and act as a decent back-up. He’s got international experience, so I’m alright with this.

I’d also disagree regarding the squad players – given our first team quality, we can easily bleed one or two youngsters into the team without too much trouble against the weaker sides. Players like Akpom, Aneke, Gnabry, Eisfeld and even Zelalem should get a decent run out.

But yes – I am disappointed with the lack of a defender, and a lack of a striker. The consolation is this; should we keep relatively injury free, we’ll have a great season, no questions asked. But if we suffer more injuries… well. It could go either way, really. But still drooling at our powerful midfield.

    • Likely he knew Madrid would be stupid enough to let go of this gem when we were tacking Higuain. Therefore decision not to push.

      Spurs shot off prematurely.

Bale to Madrid for 85m meant Ozil to us for half since he would never go to a club of their calibre.

Flamini signing is a brilliant piece of business too. Doesn’t cost us much and affords us the resource to sink in on Ozil. Covers both RB (so Sagna can cover at CB) and gives us triple redundancy at DM (along with Arteta and emergent Ramsey)

      Well done.

  75. Great signing. All those cunts saying he’s too expensive can go fuck themselves!!He’s probably the best playmaker on the planet on current form other than maybe cesc.

Oh and 5pur2,You buy 6 player for a total of 100 million and we buy 1 and we’re still better than you.

    • Cos they are piss at Madrid and rightfully so.

…they did brilliant business buying a player that scored but 7 more goals than Walcott and less than half his assists for 85m and then sold the player that provides most of Cronaldo’s assists for half the price.

I have been reading comments about ozil from madrid fans more then an hour now, and they are pissed devastated and angry they rate him at same class as ronaldo arguably their best second player and talking all night that he is better than inesta an saying that ronaldo would never score a lot goals as he was scoring with ozil and ozil is the best assists man in la liga also their engine of the team they are so pissed they want to hang perez and they would never want bale in the first place if ozil meant to be sold, so don’t get me wrong I didn’t wrote this to tell you that i learned how super quality players is ozil every gooner knows that and knows what real madrid fans are talking about, I wrote this because I still can’t believe what a word class player RM sold to us and yes he is better than inesta. One more thing I’m watching you tube videos of Ozil not because I don’t know how world top top top class player he is and need to impress me but because I can’t wait for the international break to end and for our next game to watch him destroy sunderland, so I’m watching and I’m dreaming. What a great feeling.

    • We won’t be using him just to destroy Sunderland mate.

With this midfield we are up for most in the CL.

      AM – Ozil, Jack, Rosicky
      CM – Ramsey, Jack, Zelalem
      DM – Arteta, Flamini, Ramsey

This midfield trio is going to run rings around almost every team out there.

  78. Really happy with Ozil signing and now with a front four of Ozil,Santi,Walcott and Giroud and the stability we seem to have gained as a unit we will be a force again. A bit gutted a certain Danish cunt wasn’t off loaded and is still claiming his 52 large a week but you cant have everything.

  79. This goes out to all the pathetic Totty, Poo-l, Man U fans who all anonymously lept on our seemingly dead carcass every twitch of our way to coming back to life as we have today, “You’ll never get past Fenerbahce,” “5th place to Arsenal at best,” etc, etc, etc., for even a 6 year old can chip in with an online comment.

And to Gerrard, “Arsenal are not a big step forward.” Well, you massive cunny with the horrid hairline, actually we’re in the Champions League and just signed Özil. So you can fuck off. Your lucky little 3-game streak with Sturridge won’t last, if you will now allow me to make my own predictions.

It’s a shame though. Suarez is a cunt, but we were in for a dastardly forward player. I’m very, very happy with Özil instead, but I would have liked of course to have a prolific striker too. It could be Giroud’s season, but we don’t have any credible backup. If he gets injured, we will play Sanogo, and maybe even Bentdner. Chelshit signed a boatload of strikers on their books. Anyways, no time to be negative. Here’s to a good season.

NOTE: Most other teams without a sugar daddy including wank united signed on the last day too.

  80. You have to understand what Arsene is looking for in a player before you can comment on if Ozil or anyone else is what we need. Arsene has experienced working with a player like thiery Henry who was an out of this world 30+ goals a season every season striker. He probably seen the effect it had on the team. Also with Van Persie his last couple of seasons. Did the other players slack a bit or not give their absolute best because they thought that Thiery or Van Persie will do it for them. Also do those prolific strikers hold too much power that unbalance the team and the club. If you want to know if an attacking player is of Arsene’s calibre check out his assist tally before his goal tally.
Look at Giroud’s assists from last season, it was fantastic and thats why Arsene rates him so highly. He looks to score but also creates opportunities for his team mates. This spreads the goals around and increases everyones confidence in front of goals and keeps morale high in the squad. Selfish goal scorers have the opposite effect. All players have egos and they dont want to be constantly asked about how great x player is or how great his goal was.

Mesut Ozil has the highest number of assists in Europe over the last 3 years and that is an incredible stat. Look back a few years and see if you can remember a French fellow by the name of Robert Pires. Well Ozil might just be the one how can walk in his boots…

    Wenger still the shit

  81. Those who are worried about Bendtner, he will only play the shitty games like the Carling cup so we dont risk Giroud. I think as long as Wenger doesnt risk the first 12 or 13 team players on the Cup competitions we can compete for the tittle. For champions league i dont know, it depends on our attitude on the day. Either play as good as we can play (Ac milan, Bayern) or hide like we know we can. Back ip players in the shape of Rosiscky, Flamini, Jenkinson, Vermalen, Podolski, Fabianski, The Ox and to a lessor extent Gnarby Sonogo is not bad at all. Just dont know why thos morons in the media cant see that. Muppets

  83. A bit disappointed overall as I was hoping for a backup striker (funny because at the start of the season I wanted Giroud to be the backup). Hopefully with Ozil in the team we can go some way to the good old days where we had the ball on a string & had the opposition chasing shadows & we were winning things. Can’t wait to see Ozil in action & in the meantime hope HFB stays injury free

I am disappointed we didn’t strengthen in other areas and the squad is thin but I hope we do some business over January.
    Exciting times for arsenal fans!

The team have to analyze the best way possible to get the maximum benefit out of our new and existing players. Our current performance is highly promising and we will be much better by the time Arteta, vermalen, chambo and podolski become fit again.Come on you gunners!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!i really believe that we will fight for both the trophy in the premier and champions league. In Arsene,we trust!!!
