Everton 3-0 Arsenal: player ratings

Everton 3-0 Arsenal 2014

Another hugely disappointing away day saw Everton deservedly win the game 3-0. I don’t think we can have any complaints about the result.

Here’s how the players rated.

Maybe the only player to come out of it with any real credit, made good saves but let down by sloppy, careless defending by those in front of him.

Sadly looks like time is catching up with him, own goal at Goodison the dirty dollop of poo on the top of his puke sandwich of a day. How he got booked when Barkley should have had a red card is a mystery though.

Definitely brings something to the team on certain days, but when he doesn't is mostly ineffective. Today was one of those days.

Unlucky to be denied his first Arsenal goal due to an errant offside flag, but as bad as Giroud is he's really not ready. Not his fault, of course, but undeniably true.

Bonus rating: Arsene Wenger: 0/10 - Team didn't perform, he didn't react quickly enough, and yet another away day disaster in a game that really mattered.

      • Absolutely love Arsene Wenger, I think he has done a truly outstanding job for Arsenal.
I’m just starting to wonder if he has still got what it takes to manage in the Premier League.

As a team we’re consistently making the same mistakes season after season, nothing seems to be changing, I honestly thought that when we made the huge summer signing of Ozil it was a sign that the club were adjusting to the new financial climate the modern game finds itself in.. but then to not go out and buy again in January when we honestly did all see this coming is just simply ridiculous.

The best chance we’ve had for 10 years to win the title .. the club including Arsene had paved the way for a huge season up and till Xmas, top of the league and cruising.
All we had to do was go out and get what the team so badly needed, and we didn’t do it again… and here we all are, early April wondering what might of been.

Arsene has done a sterling job, I hope he bags the FA cup then steps down.
Time for change in the summer I think.

Thumb up 191 Thumb down 13

      • Agree. The panorama of the two dugouts Said it all. Wenger passively in his seat, while Martinez was actively yelling commands to his team from the Line. Even at 3-0 up and Everton was on the counter he ran out to the Line and shouted for Baines to stay back incase Arsenal came back on a break.

Thumb up 1 Thumb down 1

    • how is this team 4th? we are a bunch of soft fuckers, take us to buy Everton’s worst player, must say i do not enjoy watching anymore, Wenger would never buy the likes of McCarthy or Coleman, could have had either of them easily, must he insists on buying shite second rate players from France ect.

Thumb up 29 Thumb down 36

    • It’s not that Wenger does not know how to build a winning team. He is good at building a great first team which plays to a very specific way, whether it be the great counter attacking or the possession based sides of the past, but the problem is there never is a plan B when that tactic doesn’t work. The last 2 seasons, the team has moved away from the possession based football but has struggled to find a consistent identity. You could see how even after all that time out, it looks like Ramsey could be the most important player to build the team around. Cazorla has been frustrating to watch as he doesn’t seem to show if he is a attacking creator or someone who wants to dictates the midfield from deep, often doing neither.

Thumb up 2 Thumb down 0

    • sad, but not even remotely a surprise. when was the last time your remember thinking, “wenger’s really set up his team smartly to counter _______’s team’s strengths”, etc. this is completely normal. pathetic.

Thumb up 100 Thumb down 3

      • your correct and then martinez went back to the drawing board and outmanaged wenger, it was clear from the first 20mins that his formation was not working and it was clear some players needed to be changed and yet wenger like always had to wait till the 65th min after the damage has been done to do anything

Thumb up 14 Thumb down 0

  1. i mean what else needs to be sad, its time we bench some players and let them know they are not bigger than AFC, win the FA cup for wenger and he should just walk away, he has been a great servant and he can still leave with his head up high, but he should not make the mistake of signing a new cntract #wengerout

Thumb up 67 Thumb down 17

    • Nice to see such support when the chips are down.

Also all you Martinez In lot, you do know the guy got a team relegated last season lol?

Thumb up 87 Thumb down 40

      • What is the point in supporting them when they do this in every big away game? Enough is enough, they talk all they want but when it counts they do fuck all. Embarrasment to the club

Thumb up 30 Thumb down 40

        • If you are a true supporter you support them even if they get relegated all the way down to league 2.

That’s why we are called ‘supporters’, Christ, the one upside of tough times like this is the fair-weather glory hunter fans f*ck off to someplace else.

Thumb up 135 Thumb down 28

      • You can criticise what needs criticising and still be a true fan. We support The Arsenal! Not one particular manager or players.

Thumb up 5 Thumb down 1

      • and he won the fa cup with wigan, arsene is in a similar situation hopefully he can win the fa cup and be able to keep us in champions league spot instead of getting us relegated much the same as wigan and martinez

Thumb up 0 Thumb down 0

    • Certainly a host of Everton fans would disagree, but Arsenal are a bigger club than the Toffees, but not by much, they have a very respectable history.
Martinez has done a good job there in his first season, it’s seems to be a mutually happy agreement, there’s a nucleus of good team there, so why leave a good thing in exchange for what could very well turn into a disaster.

Thumb up 7 Thumb down 2

    • When we play with Giroud we play 10 v 11. He brings almost nothing to the side. He can’t run at defenders, he can’t turn defenders, he can’t win his 1 on 1 duels, he can’t keep the ball, and spends most of the game on his ass with his hands in the hair. fuck sake

Thumb up 142 Thumb down 5

      • Any time the ball goes to Giroud he loses it. His ball control is absolutely atrocious and you can even see his teammates trying to avoid passing to him as he will inevitably hand it straight back to the opposition. Sanogo has far more energy and motivation, and I really think we should be starting him with Giroud as a substitute around the 70th minute. It worked wonders against Everton last time round yet we still drag out the same team with tired players who you can see can’t really be bothered.

Thumb up 42 Thumb down 6

        • Tired, they have just had a week off since their last game. I mentioned on the back of the Chelsea debacle that we always seem knackered when we have a break of more than 3 days between a game and yesterdays result seems to support that theory.

Thumb up 0 Thumb down 0

      • one could say it’s like playing 10 v 12 as giving the ball to Giroud is basically giving it to the opposition

Thumb up 36 Thumb down 1

    • Yes if Wenger managed to start someone with pace. I’m sure teams are dreading the lightning quick Giroud counter attack. I know it’s getting old to bang on about Giroud but early in the game there was an errand back pass to Howard. ANYBODY slightly faster than Giroud gets to that ball and puts in the back of the net. It was gift wrapped.. for anyone not named Giroud.

Thumb up 53 Thumb down 1

      • This the main problem. I feel sure that if we still had Walcott and Ramsey in the team pefrormances and results in this second half of the season wouldn’t have been quite so bad. But injuries, fatigue, suspensions etc are part and parcel of football and it’s the manager’s job to ensure you have a squad with enough depth and quality to compete. Not signing a world-class winger and striker in the summer or January (plus defenders ideally) was negligent if not incompetent. We’re reaping the results of that now.

Thumb up 8 Thumb down 0

  2. Nacho a 3? Seems like he’s always making the wrong runs; horrendous positioning without the ball. Also very poor before the first goal. But the moment, the whole defense, our self-declared backbone of the team, looks very shaky.

Thumb up 30 Thumb down 1

    • i was really hoping we would prove everyone wrong this season. and ManU’s crap season would have been an icing on that cake. Now it seems their cursed bad form has jumped onto us.

Thumb up 1 Thumb down 1

  3. yikes, the FA cup semi and final (if we get there) are both away from home. How can we be so good at home and so poor on the road. The game is still played on grass right? Get these boys a shrink; no one was battling today.

Thumb up 30 Thumb down 2

  4. Sorry to nit-pick but you still haven’t fixed the zero rating glitch.

On a side note we folded against a good press again today. No outlets for the passers at the back and they were left to pass it sideways until Everton pressed us back into our defensive third.
Wigan will have the same game plan (They did it against City too) and looking at how obstinately we refuse to learn from our mistakes, they will succeed at it.

Thumb up 22 Thumb down 2

  5. Yes, unlucky injuries have taken their tole and im not surprised the midfield look low on energy and ideas, but (a) Defensively we are a shambles. What in earth is going on (b) We’ve looked utterly impotent up front for about 3 months….if we bring in a decent forward on loan in jan, when we know theo is out, that’s another 4-6 points and we’re just about hanging on in the title race. Im sorry but this lies with the manager. We can no longer blame it on a tight transfer budget/financial restrictions. Giroud is eeehh, sanogo & bendtner are simply inadequate. Im not saying arsene out, but i cant remember feeling less supportive of him, even after the lowest points (8-2) . Sad times

Thumb up 53 Thumb down 1

    • Is there any manager in a top 4 club in Europe who loses so heavily so often. I love wenger, he changed this club but sadly and I do mean sadly he has to be ushered upstairs or into retirement. Over the past three seasons even the top four is becoming an almighty struggle and one day we wont make it, maybe this year even. we are regressing instead of progressing and if wenger has the control that everyone thinks, he has to evaluate his position. He will not change his tactics when losing and makes substitutions to late, yes they have an impact but we are always at least two down at that stage and the game is over and why do we need these big team talks at half time when we are losing, we are the Arsenal, we should be making other teams have these team talks. The manager has to take responsibility and I think its time to go wenger. Thanks for the glory years wenger.

Thumb up 15 Thumb down 1

  6. #wengerout. Clueless, tactically naive and did I mention an embarassment? Please win the cup and leave. Hell please leave even if you don’t. Thanks for the memories 10 years ago. But its time to end the subsequent 10 years of pain.

Thumb up 38 Thumb down 11

  7. All the fans who ask the Wenger out brigade who they think could do a better job than Wenger. Question should be who could do any worse at this pointt?

Thumb up 29 Thumb down 22

    • This is actually an interesting question. Personally I am not at all convinced that Wenger signing a new contract for the club is the right way forward. However, a lot of the #wengerout crowd seem to have very little to offer in terms of

      a) A manager that is available
      b) One that would be an improvement
      c) One that could take a club like Arsenal to the next level in the same manner Wenger did.

Try to narrow that down and you are left with very few names. Just look at the high profile names that have made abject failures in other clubs and you will get the idea.

The important question though: Do I trust the current board at Arsenal to make the right choice? No. No, I do not.

I think the changes made in the youth teams are a step in the right direction, and hopefully it shows some steely determination to rectify the fact that there is no natural successor in the coaching staff. We could end up with a ManU post SAF situation, and I think noone wants that…

Thumb up 15 Thumb down 4

      • I think we don’t realise quite how attractive a job the Arsenal job is. Managers would I suspect make themselves available. The money in the coffers is particularly attractive. But a manager who is prepared to buy 3-4 top quality players. And give some of our players clearly defined roles… Cazorla, Wilshere, Chamberlain all need someone who will tell them what their role is going to be. It’s a fantastic job.

Their are a dozen managers who would try to do a better job than Wenger by doing something different. New players, flexible tactics, blooded youngsters, medium term planning (longterm has been sorted) and a distinct style is not beyond managers who would be attracted to the job.

Thumb up 22 Thumb down 1

      • I agree, it is not easy to find an established manager who would be able to push Arsenal to the next level. However, how many Arsenal fans can honestly say they had ever heard of Wenger BEFORE he joined Arsenal FC?
Maybe the manager we need isn’t someone who has been winning trophies with the big clubs. Then again, I’m not saying an established manager is one we should let pass by unnoticed.
While I do agree that Wenger has moved the club to higher grounds financially and provided us with a new stadium, he is the manager and coach of Arsenal FC. His main priority should be winning trophies, motivating his team, adapting to tactics of the opposition and making key decisions ON the pitch as well as off it. It is safe to say that this side of his job has been below par for a few seasons now. I completely respect the man and love what he did for this club, but maybe he should be moved to a different position and have another person take on the role of what happens on the pitch.

Thumb up 3 Thumb down 0

  8. Wenger never respond when the team is losing,he is using the same old tactics in every games, big games small games, there is nothing left in him,the team don’t need him anymore. He is putting faith in giroud and sanogo, and the lost games shown us that he is wrong, he is not as good as he was lastime in managing the team,in putting faith on the right player

Thumb up 21 Thumb down 0

  9. Dear Mr Wenger.please dont sign new contract.enough is enough.you are a looser.please win the F.A.cup and leave.

Thumb up 20 Thumb down 65

  10. Pissed off!! Working 16 hrs shift so I can pay my cable in order to watch Arsenal games but boy! No reward from my team, glad I was working and making money than watching these overpaid donkeys today!

Thumb up 56 Thumb down 6

  11. Can’t you just enable us to rate Wenger? It shouldn’t really take much work and it will allow us to actually express how we feel about the manager after each game without pointing fingers at each other?

Thumb up 17 Thumb down 2

    • And at the end of the season we can get the averages and see how we felt the team did?! Or are you really just too scared that Arsene will get 0/10?

Thumb up 7 Thumb down 2

  12. How much ever we try to believe Wenger is a great manager, this season has proved that there were tactical mismatches in the big games we played. Look at the width we gave to the Everton wingers. I don’t know why Wenger learns from mistakes. Is it a hint for the club to look at other options at the end of the season?

Anyway, the scene would be perfect for Wenger to step down in May just after winning the FA Cup! I hope we win it!

Thumb up 15 Thumb down 2

  13. Our away form against the better teams in the league has been abysmal this season. I’m not even going to pretend I have the technical knowledge to say what we could do better but something has to change. Sure the players are tired but we seem have huge gaps all over the pitch which the better teams seem to be exploiting. I really feel for Arteta, like blogs said in the article seems time is catching up with him.

Anyway we REALLY need to put these garbage few months behind us and focus on next week’s semi-final and get a win.

Thumb up 14 Thumb down 0

  14. That was shocking… City, Chelsea and Liverpool away; in those matches we were underdogs. A loss wasn’t unexpected, but to lose by that amount was awful. And now we go and bomb out against Everton of all teams. They aren’t bad by any means, but this was a match that we really, truly should have won. This actually has me worried for the tie against Wigan this weekend, especially with Flamini suspended. Here’s hoping Rambo and Chambo are both raring to go, we won’t have a chance against Wigan if nothing changes. Let’s not forget, they beat City at home, and the only other teams to do that this season were Chelsea and Bayern bloody Munich. If we do this against them, they’ll punish us.

Thumb up 12 Thumb down 0

  15. whoever is planning on telling wenger to sign a new contrat better know its not APRIL the first and i dont take kindly to jokes or pranks after that date #wengerout

Thumb up 5 Thumb down 3

  16. The most worrying feature of this slump in form is that the individual looking the most affected is AW himself. I have always backed him, never been a member of the seemingly large group of supporters baying for his departure, but if he is unable to put energy, drive and purpose back into this team now, is he going to be the right man to do it in the summer? The team needs a lift, and I am hoping against hope that lift will come through FA cup success. I get the feeling that we’ll need a huge slice of luck to do it though. . . Whatever happens the fans must stick by the team; we always have that desire to influence what is happening on the pitch, and with the lack of confidence so apparent, perhaps now we can have that significant influence we so desire.

Thumb up 16 Thumb down 1

    • Not sure the group baying for Wenger out is particularly large. They seem to have an inordinately prominent media voice. But fortunately are not prominent inside the ground despite all the directional microphones Sky use to make it sound like a small group booing is actually the entire ground……,

Thumb up 8 Thumb down 1

  17. Cunt/10: Liverpool owner yank cigarsucking Henry for pissing all over the law of England and “choosing to ignore” the buy-out clause in Luis Suarez’ contract.

With Luis Suarez, 2013-2014 really would’ve equalled 2003-2004. Without him, we are staring at a GBP100mm summer spending spree just to get back into the Champions League.

Thumb up 27 Thumb down 1

    • why didn’t that become more of a thing? I mean like a FA/police investigation and media coverage? Why didn’t we make more fuzz? It was just like “Liverpool owner breaks both football and regular laws – keep calm and carry on”. They should be prohibited from buying players like Barca or something

Thumb up 19 Thumb down 3

      • Because we broke the tapping up rule by finding out about the clause from Suarez’s agent. If we made it a legal case, we would’ve lost and quite likely have been in trouble for tapping up. Liverpool chose to ignore the clause knowing we wouldn’t pursue it legally and told Suarez he had to stay. It’s like finding stolen items in your neighbors house when burgling it yourself – you know it, they know it, but you can’t do anything about it.

Thumb up 13 Thumb down 1

  18. One of the only fighters in our team.
The Fucking warrior, Bacary Sagna is going to leave at the end of the season.
I hope someone pays him what he deserves.
    This team doesn’t deserve Sagna.
The man dealt with Baines and one other Cunt the whole game, all alone. Maybe the reason he is leaving is that he is fed up of this Shit.

Thumb up 60 Thumb down 4

    • Absolutely agree, apart from the mistake for the third goal, Sagna was our best player by a country mile, fought the whole time when the rest of the team looked like they had given up. I can’t blame Sagna if he wants to leave but we need this guy.

Thumb up 22 Thumb down 4

    • I just wish he wouldn’t keep sending in pointless crosses into the box when Giroud is marked by like 5 players, try something else for god’s sake.

Thumb up 11 Thumb down 3

  19. As much as we need a new striker this summer, we equally much need a new DM. I love the guy and he has had some good games this season but we are not going to win the league with Arteta in there.

Thumb up 21 Thumb down 1

  20. Nacho monreal = andre santos in disguise?
    Arteta = f*cking useless
    giroud = worse than awful

There was no movement whatsoever and the only player our centre backs could pass the ball into was arteta, who then ofcourse passes it wide…

Thumb up 18 Thumb down 5

  21. Valiant performance from Sagna today, what a soldier he is. A shame about the third goal though. Yet, I dont blame him for it. For the past few games I find it ashtonshing how we have to rely on Sagna on the right hand side. He’s completely isolated. I know we dont have Walcott, but come on Wenger, stop acting like we haven’t got a Gnabry or Chamberlain to utilize.

Thumb up 29 Thumb down 0

  22. Vermaelen said the other day the players were desperate for Wenger to stay. On this evidence I’d say more than a few want him out.

Thumb up 7 Thumb down 2

  23. I think the criticism Giroud is getting is absolutely absurd. Like yeah, we should have a better striker, who could do something on his own, but why he is getting all the slack, when our midfield, with Arteta in it, can’t even pass the ball forward. Honestly I think that Arteta is the one who should be getting the slack, he is ridiculously slow, defensively doesn’t offer almost anything, and he is so fucking immobile it is nauseating. It pisses me off to no end seeing him give the ball to the wing, and there is a super lovely pocket of space 10 metres in front of him and him just backing even further down. If he would just move there, it would make a whole world of difference, because, even if he doesn’t get a pass, he would force the opponents to move, creating new space. Take a look at any of the games where we have played well and what is the difference? We have players running between the lines and even if they don’t get the pass they create space for others and force opponent players to move as well. Right now, most of the time, that we attack, Arteta gives the ball to the wing, then for whatever inexplicable reason, fails to move his slow ass, thus calling the opponents to press the player on the wing and eventually lose the ball. I don’t quite understand why he doesn’t get any more stick, when he really is nowhere near the quality that we should have there.

    • Arteta is the new Denilson.

So many goals this season have been when our supposed DM Arteta hasn’t tracked the runner into the box who has simple tap in for a goal.

  24. Gonna go through the team and decide if they have a future at Arsenal or not
Szczesny – He’s alright but if we wanna be ambitious and reach the likes of Bayern we could do with a better keeper, but he’s young and hes good enough
Sagna – Wants to leave, is going to leave, Serge Aurier replacement.
Mertesacker – Very good defender and leader
Vermaelen – probably gonna leave at the end of the season
Monreal – Fuck off right now, honestly, worst technical spanish player of the last decade, we need back up to Gibbs, Juan Bernat from Valencia, perfect and class
Arteta – keep him as back up next season, average
Flamini – keep him as back up next season, average
Cazorla – most definetely good enough and just signed new deal happy days
    Rosicky – love rozza
Poldi – can fuck off with nacho, not good enough save ourselves 100k please
Giroud – looked awful today, but dont think hes a bad player, get a better striker in next season and have him as back up, things will look better

    • well, that doesn´t excuse such a Performance i think. and there must be a reason we have such an amount of injuries to key Players. read an article on gunnerholic which has a good point

Thumb up 2 Thumb down 0

  25. I’m really starting to think Wenger isn’t the right man for this job anymore. This awful away performances are not a coincidences. He didn’t change anything, same mistakes, same players. Why are cazorla, Arteta and Podolski in the starting lineup. Today we needed physical presence and with Arteta and cazorla we won’t get it. And I won’t talk about Poldi’s attitude. I Still think Ox and maybe kallstrom should start. But I’m glad Rambo is back. He immediately showed what we lack. Hope he will be back at his best soon. Again where was support for Giroud. Again i don’t think he was our worst player on the pitch and Monreal also not. First goal was more Vermaelen’s fault. Hard to take these results and now another week waiting and hoping to see better Arsenal.

Thumb up 2 Thumb down 2

  26. What the fuck made us think that against a hard working team like Everton we could just turn up and stroll around and come away with three points?? We have seen this sort of performance too many times now, and I don’t care what anyone say’s that’s down to the manager, fourth place or not…it’s time to go.

Thumb up 9 Thumb down 1

  27. Can’t help but feel bad for Mikel. I love that guy. He’s a very talented & classy midfielder, but he’s not a natural DM (breaking news)! And now like blog said, time is catching up with him. He left a hole in our attacking movement & also in our defence.

But this repetitive crash is not an individual’s fault, it’s a team effort.

& I think, if we keep playing a system that doesn’t suits the types of players we got, naturally we’re going to get exposed from time to time.

    Oh well.. Whatever.

Thumb up 20 Thumb down 0

  28. Cue mindless guff from Arteta ‘we know we let the fans down but it’s important we bounce back’. Cue AW ‘we were unlucky with injuries. Next game is now super important’. Only two things to say: Aw has been bypassed by tactical requirements and developments in the past few years. Also the team have developed a serious bottler mentality over recent seasons

Thumb up 20 Thumb down 0

  29. So despondent after that result, Everton will really believe that they can get fourth now and they have the momentum.
I’m hardly the only one who feels a bit foolish for my optimism early in the season.
Next season will be by far the most dangerous time in premier league history not to get Champions League football. United will spend massively this summer and Spurs will surely be better next season. With good things happening at Everton and Liverpool, we need to pull out socks up or this time next year we could be fighting for seventh.

Thumb up 9 Thumb down 0

  30. When was the last time anyone actually enjoyed watching us play?

1-1 at Munich was okay but undermined by the fact that it all felt rather pointless.

1-1 against City was okay and spirited for once but undermined by the fact that we really should have won it.

1-0 at Spurs was made better by the fact that it was Spurs but it was by no means enjoyable and we were largely absolute pap throughout that game.

Liverpool, City away, Chelsea, Swansea, Bayern at home, and Stoke barely bear thinking about.

I guess there’s been the FA Cup hasn’t there, but still, its all been a bit of a chore recently.

    • a Manager with a record like ours in the last 2 months in the league gets the sack everywhere, this is Relegation stuff, at least away from home: soton 2:2, Lpool 1:5, stoke 0:1, Spurs 1:0, Chelski 0:6, everton 0:3; wins 1, draws 1, defeats 4, Goals 4:17 just not good enough!

Thumb up 23 Thumb down 0

  32. Sigh. Not only is this seriously disappointing, so is anticipating the”Wenger out” and “mass exodus” stories that will proliferate the summer….again. At least there’s a World Cup to distract this year.

    • Sorry but that’s bullshit. Distinctly recall him winning a corner at one stage, it was scintillating.

Thumb up 9 Thumb down 0

  33. I don’t want to pile on Giroud more because i do like the guy but i feel like we just cannot play him when playing away. Every team seems to know that when we play Giroud up front away all they have to do is bump him around a bit and he will constantly fall to the ground looking pleadingly to the ref all game. While i know Sanago isn’t ready technically he at least seems to be able to throw himself around a bit better than Giroud. Though frankly neither is a guy we can look at as a definitve goal scoring option when we are up against it and need the break through. It leaves us with a bad option either way do we go with Sanago who is a bit of a blunt weapon or Giroud who while much sharper is liable to shattering under pressure from the opposition?

Thumb up 6 Thumb down 0

    • In the first half of the season we were so exciting on the edge of the box. Today and for the past few games we seem to get to there, panic, and then turn around or pass out wide. Its like the 18 yard line is an electric fence that we’re scared of touching.

  35. Tactics surely when arteta n flamini play flamini has to be the holding player ! We need pace n leave chamberlin on the bench ? Why hasn’t he been played up front or at least tried ! I love Wenger but ? What’s going on at the min the balance has gone n doesn’t seem to be able to adapt or change the game quick enough ! Is Steve bould a good no 2 they seem to have different ideas n is confusing the play ?

Thumb up 0 Thumb down 3

    • Please clarify how Steve Bould has different ideas and is “confusing the play”. You were making some good points until that part.

Thumb up 5 Thumb down 0

  36. Okay, well everyone has pretty much summed up everything that I was thinking and the player ratings I can’t argue with. It seemed to me that the first two goals were completely Vermalean and Monreal’s fault. First goal vermalean I felt let the cross passed by him too easy and monreal got on the wrong side of Lukaku. 2nd goal Lukaku very easily ran past both players and scored without doing anything that clever, just a straight running around them. I agree Arteta was particularly poor, but mainly I do feel that he and flamini were not positioning themselves correctly when everton had the ball, which caused a lot of our problems. Plus on the 2nd goal one of the two (I forgot who) miscontrolled an interception to let everton break (haven’t we learned anything about losing the ball in the midfield against teams that counter attack well? Just fuckin put your foot through the ball if your not sure you can control against those teams….). Regarding Sonogo, I think your right that it is too soon for him, but he had a couple of nice moments. The disallowed goal was debatable, he looked onside to me, right? Also, with some clever foot work he nearly got away from two Everton players crowding him out and should had a free kick from that. That’s more than Giroud did the whole game, but I agree with Top Gun in that he is just not that type of player to create something from nothing and do it on his own. I think next season Sonogo could be ready, he really is not that far off from what I can see and I think he was a great buy. All my other complaints are just the same as what everyone else is complaining about (why didn’t we buy another striker and centerback in January, etc, etc….). Also, Top Gun’s point about running into that space between the centerbacks and everton midfield is a good one. We really struggled to make and exploit space in the midfield when having the ball near their final third (our build up out of the back was actually very good and arteta and flamini were constantly getting the ball without too much pressure, but not finding anyone in good space further up the pitch).

  38. I’m a big fan of wenger as i started watching football just as he took over, so unfortunately I have the same entitled feeling as the rest of the younger arsenal fans. I just think that if we’re still in fourth at the end of the season and win the cup wenger should sign the thing, but anything less than that isn’t a step forward so we should at least consider other options, maybe for the end of next season?

Thumb up 6 Thumb down 2

  39. I sort of agree with Sanogo not being ready to be the first team striker, but right now I think it’s a much better option than Giroud. Even if his finishing would be rubbish, even if he did get a goal today(in my head where the referee isn’t a twat), he would still move around more than Giroud. I think he’d hold on to the possibility with both hands and legs and run his socks off. That will at least create space for other players who actually can finish. Drop Mikel for Rambo. Kim comes in fro Flamini in the next two matches. Those are the three main changes we need. Right now, anything is better than Arteta and Giroud.

Thumb up 17 Thumb down 0

  40. This is the first time that I have felt a need to comment on this blog, I have been reading it for the last two years, after finding it by accident! Anyway I know AW is the manager and he gives the team the tactics and the way he wants them to play, but please somebody, and I mean this sincerely, please tell me if all these paid, highly paid I may add, professionals find that what Mr AW has told them to do is not working, and these said professionals who have been playing since they could walk couldn’t have changed things themselves? I mean AW may have been unhappy with them for doing this but it’s got to be better than what they did do

Thumb up 7 Thumb down 0

  41. Finally!… They realise 5 years later. wenger out!!!! turns out Owen was right about us finishing fifth. Surely wenger has to be out now????

Thumb up 3 Thumb down 6

  42. I have commented before that we don’t want Giroud anywhere near this Arsenal team. I’ll say it again Giroud is absolutely the worst striker on any top four contending team in the league. We don’t need him any where near this squad, not as a substitute striker either. He’s atrocious. How he continues to start games for this Arsenal team is beyond my imagination. It was as if we played with 10 men against 11 For the first 70 minutes he was on the pitch. Please get him out if this team.

Thumb up 14 Thumb down 3

  43. So this year its ‘Wenger out and Martinez in’ eh???
Seem to remember a year ago it was ‘Wenger out and Moyes in’ !
    #carefullwhatyouwishfor

Thumb up 20 Thumb down 1

    • It maybe the right moment to have a new manager. It’s been a long reign now.
But you are right : is it the best solution to our issues ? Will it change anything ? Not sure at all.
We have to find out our real issues (budget, staff, squad) before showing AW as the guilty man.
      Because it could be worse!

Thumb up 2 Thumb down 0

    • No I don’t think anyone at Arsenal wanted Moyes in.

There was a lot of talk for Laudrap but that has changed since.

Here it is, the next Arsenal Manager: Tony Pulis!!

Thumb up 3 Thumb down 3

  44. Wenger refuses to learn because he has an ideal of how the game should be played and will never deviate from that… That ideal came to realisation with the invincibles, and as much as remember those days, the game has moved on, financially and tactically. Wenger hasn’t and never will. But arsenal must move forward.. Wenger’s out!

Thumb up 5 Thumb down 2

  45. And again AW comes with his favorite answer “We should go back at work and answer on the pitch”.

Yes Arsene, we had good records abroad… until we played the biggest teams!
Yes Arsene, the 1-1 against Bayern is a good result but we were far from having a chance to win: Bayern was better.

We do not have enough quality players with experience on the field. That is his failure.
We have a lot of injuries while we do not have a deep squad with quality players. That’s his failure too.

I think he is still a great manager. But he believes so much in what he’s built that he does not realize how wrong he is now. He just waits the end of each game on his bench, waiting for players reaction… Not sure he says anything during half time… Well, maybe he needs a new challenge, as we need a new manager.

But we should not forget that our kids are really great. And we probably would not have that great perspective for the future without AW.
So yes, I still do not know whether it is a financial or a technical issue.
We think of Martinez or whoever, but is it really what we need ? Does it fix our problems ?

Who can bring a top class striker, a defensive midfielder, and an experienced goalkepper without real investment ?

  47. disagree with these ratings, terrible result but i feel the tem was let down mainly by 3 of the members, Vermaelen, just bad, positioning sucked, motivation to get to every ball not there and utter faliure to do a thing about balls passing him in the box, made mertesacker and szczesney look poor. Cazorla, i rate him but today he made no effort to track or help out Sagna, and giroud, who is simply exhausted. Sagna i cant seem to summon up the vitrol others are here, he had been thrown to the deep end here, with 2 players to deel with. Managerial mistake here im afraid. The formation just does not work without walcott, at best it can get by on ox on the right but not ideal. the the others i dont blame. you cant rate players immediately after the match especially a loss because it merely discredits the ingerity of the ratings when the match is properly reviewed. 1 goal Naismith was clearly offside, 1 was a wondergoal and 1 was unlucky.

Thumb up 3 Thumb down 1

  48. Wenger coaches the players. Someone else scouts and buys the players.

That is the only way this can work moving forward. Wenger’s edge in the transfer market, particularly in France, is gone but I don’t think he’s lost his managerial ability. The transfer market now is more competitive than ever because wealthy teams seem to exist everywhere now and as Wenger has said before, he’d never thought he’d be seeing a team like PSG buy 40 million pound players.

Let Wenger cook the meal but have someone else buy the groceries.

Thumb up 1 Thumb down 2

  49. I am with many of you on your opinions, we were bad today but Everton played in a way that was reminisant of bayern Munich style and I have to say they schooled us and we had nothing to say, I wonder what the game would have been like if jack, Ramsey, Özil and walcott were fit and playing the way they can. As for Wenger, he has been everything arsenal the majority of my life but I think his class shines in the last era of footballing environment, time has changed the league we play in and competitions we compete in and Wenger looks to be struggling. Full respect to the man though.

Thumb up 4 Thumb down 2

  50. I’m more annoyed about the fan reaction than the game. Did you suddenly think this team would morph into a world-class side. We have struggled away from home against decent sides. Even against spurs we struggled. You all got taken with the hype that we would challenge for the league. The only significant difference in personnel from last season is Ozil. Please be realistic Arsenal fans. The squad isnt good enough and yes I understand that its Arsene’s fault. But he now has the summer tranfer window coming up, lets give him that and see what he does. If we win the FA cup you can’t call this season a failure. We will get better next season, the money is finally there at the club. Just get behind the team for the next few weeks no matter what.

Thumb up 7 Thumb down 5

    • i think most fans expected this side to be significantly ahead of Everton with 5-6 games to go. The question is do you trust AW will get the 5-6 playes necessary to strengthen the team. Because that is what is needed.

Thumb up 4 Thumb down 0

      • I think the main problem at the club is that the board relies on Wenger to do everything since David Dein left. That for me is the more concerning trend. There will definitely be signings this summer and i don’t see why he can’t be trusted. A lot hangs on the FA cup this season. We also have an easier run in than Everton so 4th place is still possible. All this Wenger out stuff with only a few games left of the season does no-one any good. There will be plenty of time to air grievances in the off-season

Thumb up 4 Thumb down 2

  51. arsenal fans, now what do we do before we go down. wenger has failed us again, when every one except him saw the need to add and strenghten the team in january? he refused and now we are in a mess. the next year he will do the same thing or even worst.

Thumb up 3 Thumb down 0

  52. I don’t think the WengerOut calls are fair. One also has to see that he directs all the heat to himself. Takes it off the board and the players. Though I do think if we had been proactive in January we would have been challenging for the title. Now lets just keep faith and win the FA cup and qualify for CL.

Thumb up 4 Thumb down 5

    • I appreciate how he takes responsibility when things don’t go well, but his failure to ever hold the players accountable is part of the problem.

Thumb up 3 Thumb down 0

  53. Wenger’s era has come to an end. He’s to stubborn for his and the clubs own good. The only thing he still got is developing talent’s. Since when did we win a game tactically? His stubbornness to play possession football against every team doesn’t work and haven’t done for years. All our injuries are above average every season, his lack of leadership to motivate our players seems to be missing.

Looks like time is catching up with Wenger too…

We need a new passionate talented hungry manager with ideas, perhaps Clop,Martinez?

Thumb up 5 Thumb down 1

  54. Seems to me like the squad slready know Wenger is retiring in the summer.

    Pathetic and abject yet again.

I’m now actually looking forward to the World Cup, just because it means that the domestic season will be over.

  55. Arsenal are trapped between being an attacking team or a defensive counterattack team ! Some Weeks we play deep without a real out ball , some we play a high line without any real pressure we tried playing the offside trap last season but that hasn’t developed . no real pace in defence or attack .

Thumb up 0 Thumb down 0

  56. No hunger.

No energy (until Ox arrived at least)

No early and decisive response from Wenger when a change was needed.

    Piss poor.

Thumb up 2 Thumb down 0

  57. I don’t see why Vermaelen has pulled a lower rating than Mertesacker. To me, he was much more involved today than the BFG. Would someone care to explain? I am genuinely asking

Thumb up 1 Thumb down 1

  58. 1. The past few weeks have been awful, but you have to put it in to context, you can only reach a certain level with half a team missing. The same would be TRue for any other club in the top four.

    2. The man city away was different to recent weeks there was fight.

    3. Giroud isn’t as bad as everyone says he is just knackered, for most of the season he’s played 90 mins week in week out. Everyone else rotates strikers, Suarez has played only 20 games which helps. It is arsenes biggest mistake this season not replacing Walcott in January the goals have dried up.

    4. We were told that the interim years were going to be tough and yet arsene has consistently kept us in the champions league, took us to cup finals not many managers would have kept us competitive now restrictions are off he’s signed a superstar everyone wanted and he’s probably gonna win one more trophy than Maureen

    5. The maulings in recent weeks have made me feel sick, however when you live by the sword you die by it. This is how Wenger plays no sitting back no less than 100% attack, now tired and weakened we got punished but counter that with everything good that it has bought. Would bergkamp have been god playing for Jose parking the bus every week. I think not.

    6. All the Wenger outs. Imagine a world without arsene. No invincibles, no doubles, no Henry, no European cup final, no Wednesday nights beating Barcelona, winning in Madrid, 5-1 at the san siro. No just mid table obscurity Occasional Europa league forays a club stuck firmly in the 20th century and worse of all finishing below sp#rs

Thumb up 6 Thumb down 4

    • I agree with what you have written, but the thing is that all of those wonderful memories of what Wenger achieved date back to about a decade ago. What wonderful moments have we had in recent years, bar the signing of Ozil and Ramsey’s development? Yet teams with budgets as low as Wigan have gone on to win the FA Cup. I’ll always support Arsenal, even if we got relegated because we come 5th or 6th and every decent player buggers off. However, we need a manager that can turn around the current Arsenal team and get better results than the humiliating shockers that we have had against the bigger teams this season. If Wenger can finish 4th and win the FA Cup it’s a good start in the turning around of our fortunes, but to fall from 1st place to a scrap for 4th due to not having signed a decent enough striker etc in the last two windows is hard to swallow. If we don’t win a trophy again, having started the season so well but with the need for a striker so obvious, then Wenger is ultimately accountable as manager. I can’t think of anyone else with the responsibility.

Thumb up 2 Thumb down 0

      • Well put.
All the brilliant AW moments are a decade old.

And here’s some stats on Giroud – his goal tally against City, Utd, Liverpool & Chelsea = 1 goal, and that too just against L’pool, and we have played all of them twice.

Dear Arsene, Thank you for the memories over a decade old.
Win the FA Cup, for us and for your legacy.
Hold it high and say goodbye with a bit of pride.

    Up The Arsenal.
    Time to move forward.

    and about the replacement managers,
Martinez- Why he would leave Everton for us, I really can’t see a valid reason.
    Klopp/Loew – Pipe Dreams perhaps
Vieira – He’s shown what he’s capable of in the man city U21s
Bould – Better left coaching the defense.

  62. It almost feels like that the curtain on Arsene’s era is falling quite rapidly but I hope am proven wrong. Please win the bloody FA Cup for Arsene!!!

Thumb up 0 Thumb down 0

  63. Wenger got the teams election wrong …again.

1)Should have started Chamberlain RW to counter Baines and add a bit of speed to our side.

    2) Arteta looks knackered. he has been sterling all season. Why not Kallstrom next to Flamini for the business in the middle of the park.

    3) Rosicky should have been kept LW to shield Monreal. You cannnot fault him for not being tenacious. Santi in the middle. Bring on Podolski later for Rosicky when Everton have done a bit of running.

The biggest problem is not the selection but Wenger’s very dated approach of laissez faire on field management. he leaves the team to work themselves out of a tight spot when obviously the team seems lost and could benefit from instruction.

worse, he takes far too long to make remedy and enforce substitutions.

I’ve been saying this for many seasons now. No amount of reinforcement from market will help if we do not address this issue.

he gets away with it against poorer quality opposition but the better teams very quickly take advantage of us.

Sans teeth up front (which is a market issue), the least we could do is be up for the fight. Psychologically, I did not think wenger had it to fire the players up appropriately and we were again insipid. This is an issue of management nothing-else.

Thumb up 2 Thumb down 0

    • And I’m not saying he is a mug with tactics just he gets found out against better teams.

If anything, he has flattered to deceive because of the quality of players he has brought in through his good acumen in the market. But that only goes so far and he is not fully using the assets at optimum.

It reminds me of the incident when RVP shot a glance at the bench with Wenger (I believe) withdrawing our most effective player in Chamberlain on the day. Not excusing RVP’s subsequent behaviour but I do feel there may be an element of truth in why some of the bigger names have departed over the last seasons. It is a vote of no confidence not just (then) in the market tactics (which we are turning around now) but also critically in Wenger’s tactical approach.

Thumb up 1 Thumb down 0

  64. Am I the only one who wonders why we didn’t make a move for Schürrle before Chelsea? He’s been immense for them this season and now they’re through to next round of the UCL.

Thumb up 0 Thumb down 0

  65. Martinez beat us on tactics. Lukkaku was deployed on right to exploit monreal lack of physicality and awareness with naismith a more faster player to wiggle into spaces around the tall and slow mertesacker and unfit vermaelen.
