Did well overall, Chelsea had little joy down his side, and he at least tried to make things happen even if they didn't come off.

The decision to make the tackle was the wrong one, so unusual for a player of his experience. There was no contact, but it was only ever going to end up one way with a wankblaster like Costa. Should have stayed on his feet and allowed Cech the chance to make the save.

Was strong and aggressive, but perhaps lucky not to concede a penalty in the second half with a foul on Fabregas.

His attacking threat was nullified by the removal of Giroud, he had nobody to cross to. And with Walcott ahead of him, with whom has hasn't built any kind of relationship, it never clicked. Also probably should have done more to block the cross that led to the goal.

Oh Mathieu, that chance late in the first half. Y U NO SCORE M8? Had the most attempts on goal of any Arsenal player, but you have to ask why is he so far forward all the time.

I thought he was the only Arsenal player really up for it from the start, created that great chance for Flamini, made some incisive passes for an always offside Walcott, had 4/6 take-ons, won 5/7 tackles, made 8 ball recoveries and ran himself into the ground in the second half.

Hard to rate as he only played 18 minutes. In hindsight it feels like we'd have been better as an attacking force with him on, but if he was carrying a knock maybe the manager felt he couldn't last.

      Poorly-rated Thumb up 18 Thumb down 71

      • Firstly, the game was made difficult with the sending off.

Per wasn’t beaten by pace. Instead he was foolish to attempt the tackle.

Koscielny was caught ball watching when the pass was executed.

Per should have enough experience to know what Costa would possibly do and let him run, trusting Cech to cover his ankles. He needed to just keep close on Costa’s heels, Costa isn’t the quickest either.

Secondly again, plenty of knives out for Flammini. He covered the most distance when down to ten men running more than anyone-else at 13.2km.

Yes midfield was stretched but that was more a consequence of them having the extra man in Fabregas than Ramsey or Flammini being dissconnected. Rather Ozil and Walcott needed to be more aware tracking back.

Thirdly, (unless your a moron) you can understand why Wenger took Giroud off from a tactical stand point. We needed pace to cover ground and he was anticipating Chelsea hemming us in, us having to play on the counter. That said, Giroud is the more in form player and Walcott has just been dissapointing of late.

Fourthly, Gabriel. All this bollocks about Per not being good enough or Ramsey-Flamini being poor. Rammni took us through a win against a far stronger side in City and in a high pressure game against Olumpiakos. Per has made some vital interceptions in recent games where Koscielny has been off par. Gabriel was culpable for the Costa goal but some players like Per and Flammini will always be the lightning rod for misinformed criticism.

Finally those who blabber on about having to buy players (again), well the team ahead of us Leicester isn’t entirely made up of ‘world class’ players. They have made themselves ‘world class’ and the squad was assembled for a mere 17m. That’s a poor excuse. We need to have belief and be switched on. Application.

We are still 3 points of the top with Alexis coming back and City equally erratic so we have every bit to play for the title still with 15 games to go. We need to get back to winning ways quick. Soton is the next revenge game over the horizon. Lets not make excuses for ourselves. Do we want to win the title is the question. If we do, then we have the means to finish the business. Lets do it FFS.

Thumb up 17 Thumb down 10

  1. Was at the game and you must have been watching a different game to me. Ramsey other than the one great bit of skill to set up flamini was awful. The times he lost possession or was just to slow in playing the right pass. Still everyone knows you love him so not unexpected.

Thumb up 219 Thumb down 183

      • Except Bellerin,Sanchez and may be Ozil/Cambell everyone was poor.
They have yet to prove they are big game players.
Ramsey was the worst for me, not because of his lack of effort but lack of intelligence and adaptation when under pressure. He was taking ages to think where to pass.
Hopefully its a one off from him.
Also I personally think (without any rationale) that Gabriel should have started instead of Per.
        Overall its just one game.
Wipe it off or wash it off (your choice) and flush it away.

Thumb up 3 Thumb down 4

    • I’m tempted to agree with blogs, but I may not have watched closely enough after the goal to have an informed opinion. Honestly, these Chelsea games feel like some maniacal form of torture, and next time this fixture comes up I may just punch myself in the dick five times and call it a day. Either way, I also love Ramsey and think he will contribute a lot once Coq comes back and Walcott is hopefully benched.

Thumb up 86 Thumb down 12

    • Given, that in my own life and Sunday football team, I am usually a bit of a Wilshere and cannot stay fit for an entire season (Knees, Hamstrings, Ankle – you name it) you would think I would have reserved attitude towards wishing harm on any player – I know first hand that the frustration of being unable to play can be truly devastating.

You would THINK I would have that reservation… but for Diego Costa I am sorry (glad?) to say that it would please me more than a threesome with Mila Kunis and Natalie Portman if he had every bone in his legs broken by Ryan Shawcross.

Thumb up 128 Thumb down 1

    • It’s a tough one with Ramsey. I think it’s also a problem with the partnership than him alone. The first counter by Chelsea, Willian had a clean run through our midfield. Sure Ramsey lost it but the whole set up was wrong, where was Flamini if Ramsey is already high up the pitch? After being down to 10 men I think Ramsey stepped up, winning tackles everywhere on the pitch and trying to make things happen (by the end of the match he was absolutely knackered, at least we should be grateful for the effort alone). But that was mostly because Chelsea decided to stop playing and be content with the 1-0. When you don’t require discipline Ramsey is right up there. The times you need to be a bit more conservative, he might not make the best decisions. Maybe a partnership with Coq may be more fruitful.

Thumb up 30 Thumb down 4

    • Football is a game of small margins my friend. He may not have had the best game but Ramsey tried to make things happen. He lost the ball as much as any of our forward plays did today. No one is criticising Ozil for example yet he lost the ball resulting into several dangerous plays. I’d rather have our players try out things than stifle their creativity. Let’s not forget that each of them today worked hard to regain possession whenever it was turned over. Despite having a man advantage, Chelsea didn’t fashion any serious chances of note.

On a side note, Per is getting stick for nothing. Note that he looks up/across before he makes the tackle. He must’ve thought Kos would cover if he missed which didn’t happen (again small margins). On another Kos runs further forward and Per isn’t the last man. Yellow card and the outcome is different. We lost because things didn’t come off not because professional footballers don’t know scratch all of a sudden.

Thumb up 27 Thumb down 7

    • I hope Barca come in with a £50 mil for Ramsey this summer and we take it and go out and buy 2 top MF. we will also throw in Theo to sweeten the deal for them. both these players have no idea what a first touch is and for their passing and decision making has to be the worst in the league. we ont win anything with the 2 of them starting every week

Thumb up 18 Thumb down 21

  2. Aaron Ramsey again doing what he does best losing the ball high up the pitch for Mertesackers red card, but lets forget about that and let’s forget that’s it’s ultimately cost us the game.

Thumb up 66 Thumb down 40

    • Losing the ball high up the pitch happens when players try and make things happen – if you don’t try and make things happen you end up playing like van Gaal’s Man Utd.

For me the bigger issue is how easy it was for one ball to cut through our midfield. Like, I don’t think Willian would have been allowed make that pass if Coquelin was playing.

Thumb up 141 Thumb down 34

      • They cut through out midfield because Ramsey dived in playing about 10 yards further forward than he should have, allowing Willian 30-40 yards to run into.

What was Ramsey doing that far up the pitch after 17 minutes? We didn’t need to chase the game, why leave the defence so exposed so early? That’s why we keep on getting beaten by the top teams because we’re far too open.

Ramsey’s experienced enough now to know the difference and if he hasn’t learnt by now he never will. Defending isn’t optional for a central midfielder, it’s a basic and fundamental requirement, it’s quite clear that many people have had enough, it gets boring watching the same mistakes over and over again.

Thumb up 61 Thumb down 9

      • Why want Elneny playing? What’s the point of getting a destroyer if not to put him in the first team straight away? And Mertesacker has to go. He is not good enough to be captain, not good enough to be playing. Always costly errors against teams.

Thumb up 27 Thumb down 57

        • I think if you’re expecting Elneny to be a ‘destroyer’ You may be disappointed.

Beside that, I certainly wouldn’t throw him on for his first start after less than 2 weeks with the squad against Chelsea. Even this Chelsea.

Thumb up 27 Thumb down 4

          • Why did we get him then? According to Wenger we buy players only who improve the first team. Is he better than Flamini? If yes, why is he not starting? If not, why did we buy him?

Thumb up 26 Thumb down 12

          • Of course we bought him to improve the first team. But he’s been with the squad 2 weeks or less. You don’t throw in a player unfamiliar with the Premier League and the squad straight into the engine room (or what’s supposed to be the engine room anyway) against Chelsea. That’s suicidal.

Thumb up 5 Thumb down 2

    • Sarcasm(Walcott) is the coward way to face reality, and that´s why England National Football team will never win anything. Start being toughly serious on your debilities and you´ll start lefting the looser side.

Thumb up 1 Thumb down 8

  3. I actually thought we did pretty well 10 v 11 for 70 minutes. It was tought, but we stayed in the game and could have grabbed something. The dislike of Walcott is getting boring now, he often does things in big games for us, we all know what he can and cannot do!

Thumb up 159 Thumb down 26

    • Walcott is tiresome and continually disappointing. His one asset is his pace but with a lack of touch, dribbling skills, decision making or passing ability he seems to be a bystander in so many games. I would say deadweight.

We all know he can take chances but if that doesn’t fall to his feet, he doesn’t seem to offer anything else. Really disappointed in his last few games.

Although we lost, I thought we played really well and was nice to see the passion. Just a shame we got beaten by the chavs yet again.

      🙁

Thumb up 145 Thumb down 18

      • It’s his lack of effort that annoys me. He doesn’t have to be the most tactically aware or have the best technique, but just fucking try!

Thumb up 68 Thumb down 13

      • I think the really important question here is as follows:

Why is it, having been woeful up top in previous games, did Theo then play against United like he had been inseminated by alexis; put in a sensational performance, harry and chase everything, as well as terrorise their back four. Then, having received due and deserved praise, revert back to his default lethargic showings which have been nowhere near the level required by his pay packet?

I’m fed up of watching the rest of the team carry him in most games. He contributes goals every now and again but just not consistent at all.

Thumb up 27 Thumb down 6

  4. bizarre love in with ramsey, he was useless and never ever in the right position. poor pass after poor pass and generally shoddy decision making, ran around a lot though

Thumb up 160 Thumb down 48

  5. AW rating: 3/10. Wrong decision to start PM (speed v costa), wrong decision to sub OG rather than TW (proven so by the fact he took him out anyway later). Look how we pressed towards the end – Giroud would have been perfect in that position. Seems AW got most wrong today.

It’s like the psychological hurdle to beat Chelsea is more with the manager than the players… 🙁

We can still do it!! COYG

Thumb up 81 Thumb down 62

    • At 0-0 it was completely the right decision to take giroud off on paper, even without the knowledge that he was carrying a knock.

Unfortunately we went 1-0 with pretty much the next kick of the game.

The plan to keep it at 0-0 and hit them
on the counter was right. Shame it lasted all of 30 seconds

Thumb up 52 Thumb down 5

  6. Every player on the world would tackle like Mertesacker did, you have to react quick. Don’t blame him for our defeat today. And also he barely touched that scum Costa. Is any posibility costa gets a ban for diving?

It was clear before the match that Flamini – Ramsey doesn’t work. Ramsey is useless. In the past he was at least running. But nowadays we get nothing from him. We are outplayed in the midfield for some games now. Flamini at least tried today.

But the biggest credit for todays defeat takes Wenger imo. Giroud makes things happen in our final third. Without him we are completely clueless especially with none-existing midfield. I really don’t know what was in Wenger’s head at the time being. And why was Walcott a captain today? Just because of his 10 year anniversity at the club? At the moment he doesn’t deserve even bench. I think that with Giroud we could even won that game because Chelsea were bad, very bad. With crosses to Giroud we would hurt them a lot.

But still thinking more positive we are only 3 points behind first and we already played at Stoke, Liverpool and Chelsea home. That’s the bright side that we are still in it but Southampton home next Tuesday is a must win game without a question. Some players need to step up their form and the likes of Sanchez, Coquelin, Rosicky, Elneny,.. coming into the team would hopefully do just that.

Thumb up 55 Thumb down 46

    • Per should just let Costa through for one on one with Chech, if he scored, so be it….but at least we would still have 11 men on the pitch – had a better chance to equalize.

Thumb up 67 Thumb down 3

      • If Per had just let him through and he’d scored everyone would be having a go at him for being slow and wondering why he didn’t tackle him. “Why didn’t he take one for the team” and all. He made a split-second decision which didn’t come off, happens all the time. If anything Kos should’ve been covering for his defensive partner knowing he’d struggle for ace any day. Per is a top top defender who deserves more credit than he deserves. He’s one of the best readers of the game in the game currently.

Thumb up 13 Thumb down 5

      • The reason why Per did it was to deny Costa a clear goal-scoring chance. A pity we conceded almost immediately after, rendering his sacrifice worthless. That is the deeper issue haunting Arsenal over and over again – the question of mental strength.

Another lamentable fact is how no one (not even Per) seemed to even raise a finger in protest against the ref’s decision – sure it won’t have changed his mind but there is always a slight chance a vigorous complaining ‘might’ have made it a yellow. Again, a basic lack of nous on the pitch. When will Arsenal ever learn that a match against ‘equal’ teams is never just about talent and ability alone?

Thumb up 2 Thumb down 2

  7. Thought Cech’s action at the end of the game to get Kos back up onto his feet and stop him from doing a Gallas impression showed the sort of attitude Arsenal players often seem to lack.

Thumb up 199 Thumb down 1

  8. Theo is…… man. Dude outside of the City goal has arguably been our worst player.

    Flamini and Ramsey doesn’t work.

We all knew sooner or later, Per’s lack of pace would cost us.

And I do worry we may have burnt out Ozil.

Thumb up 138 Thumb down 8

    • Ozil is not burnt out just that his work rate is still but I would rather him on the pitch than Walcott what he lacks in work rate he makes up with creating chances and assists

Thumb up 13 Thumb down 20

  9. I thought Cech’s action at the end of the game to get Kos back up onto his feet and stop him from doing a Gallas impression showed the sort of attitude Arsenal players often seem to lack.

Thumb up 35 Thumb down 2

  10. Thanks for the great work you are doing blogs. I can imagine how painful it must be to write the match report after such a painful game and go on to rationally rate the players. Thanks mate and if you are ever in Bangkok, I will buy you a beer.

ok, but Flamini deserves at most a 3 just because he is Ozil’s best friend.

Thumb up 35 Thumb down 2

  11. Even with 10 men on the pitch we were the better team. Chelsea won by cheating because that’s the only way they could beat us. Costa is a diving cunt and that’s what he’ll be remembered for.

Thumb up 68 Thumb down 22

    • Look that was a soft call on Mertesacker. The commentator even mentioned just the day before a similar play was only given a yellow. Such b******* on such an important game to put us down one man for 72 minutes. God how I hate Costa. Mertesacker didn’t even really hit him. He went under him and Costa then rolled around like he had been shot. Under the circumstances, I believe we played a good game. Really a soft call that changed the complete complexion of the game.

Thumb up 22 Thumb down 8

      • Mertesacker has lately been an accident waiting to happen. Red card? Of course. How would we have reacted had it been against the Arse?? Just stupid. And not excusable.

Thumb up 25 Thumb down 16

        • I agree with you both. It was a cunt dive- Costa wasn’t even interested in going 1v1 wig Cech, his only thought and goal for the day was to get us down to 10.

And although I wouldn’t say ‘Accident waiting to happen’ Mert made a rash, rash tackle he never should have done. Stay on his feet, footsteps hounding Costa, hope to force an error, force him wide, or slow him enoug for Kos to clean him out.

Thumb up 14 Thumb down 0

      • Our destiny is still in our own boots … somehow. With the returnees being like new signings, and own goal back from his Xmas break, we are ready to surge home and seal the deal.
Get ready to sweat tho cos it will go all the way to May in a wild dogfight with and versus the Mancs, Leicester and perhaps the cruelest/kindest cut of all, Spurs.
        COYG! …
if we fuck it up, pse let Leicester win the thing. That would be gold.

Thumb up 11 Thumb down 0

  12. Are we ignoring the first Flamini chance where he fell down trying to shoot? He looked like he’d never seen a soccer ball before. Generous rating IMO.

Thumb up 36 Thumb down 12

  13. Ramsey should a 2. Pointless player who would not look out of place in Tony Pulis west brom side.
Elneny should play with Coq. Can bear to see Ramsey start another game.

Thumb up 43 Thumb down 90

  14. I believe you’ll find only about 1/3 of those on the Hindenburg died in the crash. If you have the power of time travel there are many doomed vessels to put Costa on with much better odds for his painful demise. Any suggestions? The greater chance of his suffering the better.

Thumb up 19 Thumb down 3

    • MV Doña Paz – collided with a petrol tanker carrying 8,800 barrels of gasoline on 20th December 1987, it caught fire and so did the shark infested water around the sinking ship. Of the 4,401 people on both ships, only 26 survived. 0.5% survival rate and a horrific way to go out.

Thumb up 9 Thumb down 3

  15. I am genuinely patient with Aaron Ramsey. But I really hope he gets benched for a bit. I thought he was awful today and has been on a sustained run of iffy form, with the odd goal or assist covering up game after game of shoddy passing, zero common sense on positioning and a sense of losing the ball at any given second. I don’t know if it is partly done to Flamini who is clearly a limited player beside him or is it just that we now see Ramsey’s great 2013/2014 was a freak? He worries me as a starter more than Per who has the odd bad game but plenty of decent ones or even Theo who is up and down.

Thumb up 82 Thumb down 19

    • Unless it’s a simple sideways ball it does seem a 50 50 bet that Rambo will give it away or get dispossessed at the moment. I swear in the last 20 minutes Alexis couldn’t be bothered to pass it to him. And you know somethings rotten when an obi fucking mikel shimmy puts you on your arse!

Thumb up 37 Thumb down 10

      • This attitude of ‘theo can play winger, flamini can play DM’ works against bad teams or half decent teams, but not for physical, high pressing teams like chelsh*t, soton, stoke, even spu*s . Flamini doesn’t deserve much stick because its not a lack of effort. His legs are slowly going, just like Arteta’s. We need a big physical DM presence to help retain the ball. How many times do you see people trying to press Wanyama or Yaya Toure to steal the ball?(I’m not calling them DM). There’s no point in it.

Arsenal’s ball retention on the other hand is like this.
Alexis: 9/10. Absolute beast. Even under blatant pushing while receiving the ball he manages to hold on or lay it off.
Santi : 8/10. Can only be bullied by physical, high pressing teams who are on his ass pushing him when he’s about to receive the ball. Once at feet its very hard to take it off of him, although he can be forced into a back-pass or slowed down from pinging it up-field early.
Ramsey: 6/10. With the 2 above injured, he was the best player to hold onto the ball in the midfield. Nothing to write home about, but our other options are all worse.

        How to win the season?
Until Coquelin is back, give Chambers the FA cup games as DM and see how he does. If he’s doing decently well, play him in the league. He’s atleast slightly quicker, has better strength(hopefully can resist pressing a little more as a result) and aerial presence.

Start Theo as a striker or rest him. Absolutely no point playing him on the wings. Speed and finishing don’t do much on the wings where you need to dribble, take on people, press, tackle at times, run up AND down.

Ask Ramsey to focus on the basics again. Just like the last time. Before we saw him explode with his goal-scoring exploits, everyone loved the fact that he was pressing and harrying the other midfield to regain possession. He needs to do the same, and move up-field AFTER the ball is in the final third. Late runs, just like before. Nowadays its all early.

        • I totally agree. If you use Walcott as a CF against big and alow defenders, you can rest Giroud and have him fresh for defences that suit his style of play. Playing Walcott on the left was crazy and I can’t think why he did not take a CF position when Giroud went off.

Think what Walcott’s pace would do to Terry. It would stretch the play more on a 11v11 as the Chelsea defence would not push up.

Thumb up 3 Thumb down 0

  16. We’ll see won’t we – if the Coq comes back alongside Rambo – then maybe you lot can all quit whinging about him. Rambo is quality, why do you think he used to get started on the right, when the other 3 right sided mids were fit. He’s on the team sheet before Theo and Ox for me. And JC is before those two.

Wonder if Elneny will get a start against Burnley.. Playing him today would have been too high pressure, last thing you need is to risk screwing up his confidence from day 1. If we don’t think the Flamsey combo works against top opposition you couldn’t really expect him to walk into the formation and start winging it from there.

  17. Arseblogs constant singling out of Walcott is a tad embarrassing. All his offsides were so close, split seconds. He laid one on a plate for Campbell. No one covered themselves in glory today apart from Sanchez maybe and fuck was it good to see him back. It’d be good to see some more objectivity, but then it’s a blog and it’s just an opinion, but it’s so predictable. Mertesacker lost that game for us, not Walcott. We were all over the show defensively and Theo was playing as a left winging striker more or less alone against a decent defence. Give the man a break eh?

Thumb up 27 Thumb down 39

    • bit like when he used to snipe at Joel Campbell.
Theo celebrated a decade with us, thought it was a bit strange i didnt see it mentioned by blogs but i think i get it now, he don’t rate him.

Thumb up 7 Thumb down 4

  18. Walcott….
The only time you see genuine passion from him is during contract negotiations
I can forgive anything but lack of application I just don’t understand why he starts, let alone gets the armband he looks like he needs a massive boot up the arse

Thumb up 64 Thumb down 7

  19. I guess we will play the next 3 EPL games with Gabriel.
    I hope he proves himself.
I love BFG but I think it’s time to give Gabriel a chance and help him improve.

Thumb up 64 Thumb down 1

  20. Ramsey is so inconsistent.
But, I suppose they all are they fucking cunts. Have to win the next two now. 2 points from a possible 9 plus a jammy win at home v Newcastle. Need a few players to step up now, and fast. January can fuck off.

Thumb up 10 Thumb down 10

  21. Surprised Campbell only got 5, I thought he was our best attacking player today and was disappointed with him being subbed even more than Giroud.

Thumb up 28 Thumb down 9

    • Joel missed a sitter in the 3rd minute on his left foot, should have known it would all turn to shite after that. Clattenberg is a Spurs fan, obviously. Kos would have got back to at least challenge Costa cunt and it was a dive. Per should have know better tho, time for Gabriel to take his place.
3 Flamini chances, 3 cock ups … just flush the funny and move on. We are still going to win the league if Alexis stays fit, he was the one shining light fro that pile of cat poos. And lay of Rambo, he did well in a sea of confusion and a composed Chelsea display. I need a coffee. PS: Joey Barton must not be allowed to take the FA Cup from us. Burn him with our biggest cigar. Fuucckkkkkkkkkkkkkk

Thumb up 9 Thumb down 12

  22. I dont understand all the stick for ramsey here today… he played in midfield with flamini who offers absolutely nothing cant oass to him i cant be the only one who noticed 4 times where ramsey olayed the ball straight to his feet and he literally either jumoed out the way or just acted like he didnt see it… never have i ever seen a player so bad when the ball is played to him and he didnt even do the defensive job on fabregas today would love to see elneny and ramsey together feel like ramsey would be sooo much more of a player if he had some1 that he can actually pass the ball to in midfiels at times.

Thumb up 6 Thumb down 20

  23. Flamini is not the right for this team and all these recent games have shown why Ramsey is not a central midfield player we want. A basic requirement of the central mid is passing ability and range which is way Santi plays so well there. Secondly, he needs to be able to do
Defensive work and work in tandem with his defensive midfielder. Ramsey looks like he has never seen flamini before and frankly I don’t remember a single time they have passed to each other. Third is positioning. Neither him or Flamini knows where to position themselves at any given time. They always seem to be in wrong place, always chasing the players running at our defence. To make things worse, they are out ball is Walcott who doesn’t seem to be able to pass or hold the ball even after 10 years.

Our midfield is completely dysfunctional. It is fair to say that once everyone is back, these three players will be spending fair amount of time reflecting on their performances from the bench.

Thumb up 39 Thumb down 5

    • Totally agree, after 10 games or so together you would think that they would have a semblance of an understanding of each others games but they play like complete strangers. It displays a complete and utter lack of intelligence on both parties part and really can’t see what either of them add in the long term.

Thumb up 17 Thumb down 2

    • Did we watch the same match? Don’t know but what I saw was that a CB of the other team got a red in the beginning of the match and that team had a hard time scoring a goal with one man less, despite creating good opportunities. So the conclusion of this is that some players on the pitch were sh** and should be blamed for not winning while being one man down? don’t really get the logic behind this one…

Thumb up 5 Thumb down 16

    • wrong – he was on long enough to cost us the match. 0/10 imo. how does he let costa beat him like that after all the pre-game bullshit about mental strength and knowing how to win tough and per being a leader in the dressing room. he absolutely failed the team today.

Thumb up 16 Thumb down 20

  24. We’ve come a long way with the same tired players and now we’re faltering, the defence looks jittery, this is the third game we’ve had no effective midfield, and the attack is unconvincing. Theo has been virtually invisible for a while now, Flamini and Ramsey are a disaster and Mesut should consider going back to his old boots because it isn’t often that his touch is so off. Add cheating, diving, disgusting Chel$ki to the mix and it was always going to be difficult. I think that madness from Per is a symptom of tired minds and trying too hard, nobody wants to lose to that mob. We need fresh legs and minds quickly, get our rhythm back and we can still achieve something special this season.

Thumb up 27 Thumb down 1

  25. Cech scoring a 95th minute equalizer would have been so, so delicious that I don’t know how it didn’t happen.

A number of players not at the races today but ffs Per, we know your slow…. but we expect you to be sensible at least

Thumb up 19 Thumb down 0

  26. One postive is that as soon as Alexis came on his explosive running and workrate really actually looked like they might make something happen. Delighted hes back because we’ve been a bit ropey since City and that kind of positivity will really help.

Thumb up 44 Thumb down 0

    • Nice to see Alexis back, but to this team it will make no difference. They’ll perform as awful as today again. Southampton away and now 3 games in a row without a win and amateurish performances…we’ll finish below Sp*rs and probably another 4 or 5 teams.

Thumb up 4 Thumb down 39

  27. How does the Ox not get a rating?
Played more minutes than Mertesacker and did more in that time than £140k a week.

Thumb up 14 Thumb down 8

  28. Still nauseous. They played us like a fiddle yet again. Losing 0-1 to them is worse than losing 0-4 to Southampton. I’m seriously borderline in tears.

Thumb up 19 Thumb down 0

    • Agree. With Özil nowhere no creativity anywhere. But it doesn’t really matter, we’re fucked now losing at home to a bottom team thanks to Wenger – again – choosing to play a snail at the back. Mertesacker has been really bad for a few games and shouldn’t have been playing. A disaster waiting to happen.

Thumb up 8 Thumb down 20

  29. Sorry, but this Arsenal side is overrated. Too many players are just not good enough and have been over indulged by Wenger for too longer. Walcott, The Ox, Flamini Mertesacker, Giroud should not be in our starting eleven and the our 3 world class players can not carry the rest of the team. Two points from nine is poor and not the form of potential champions.

Thumb up 22 Thumb down 42

    • Pretty much agree with every opinion there Jimbo.
Wenger is just too ‘nice’ to certain players.
I do wonder what Giroud will make of things now though. No proper football team takes off their only real striker. That one decision sums up how Wenger really feels about him.

Thumb up 12 Thumb down 18

  30. Was unable to watch the game and was planning to download it after for a post-watch. Definitely not doing it now. 100 to 0 real quick.

Thumb up 4 Thumb down 0

  31. All those people slagging off players have to realise, that they have played pretty much every game for the past 3 months. We can’t drop Ramsey, as there’s no one to drop him for. The only player we can swap with Theo is the Ox, the one player whose form is even further down the toilet. Who do we rotate Flamini for? Arteta’s hardly covered himself in glory the past few times he’s been on the pitch.
You could argue it’s our age-old problem with injuries, or a lack of recruitment.
Hopefully, it looks like some of the injured players will be back soon. Let’s face it, Santi’s out for the season, so we have to hope Alexis and Le Coq can come in and shore things up. 10-game win-streak now, please.

Thumb up 30 Thumb down 6

  32. It amazes me the negativity towards Ramsey…………….
Has he played in midfield this season yet with Coquelin for example? With Ozil central and perhaps with a functioning winger on both sides.
While Flamini has been in the “holding” role, and Walcott misfiring on the wings, not to mention the Ox being deployed in various roles about the park, he has kept going, that box to box operation, where I suggest lesser players would be overrun.
Like it or not , when Coq returns, Ramsey will maintain his present position, and then judge away people, judge away. If it then turns out, that he is still the shit player some describe here, then rubbishing the man might even be fair and relevant.

Thumb up 32 Thumb down 7

  33. You know i said after the Liverpool game and none of you agreed with me but i said it anyway it was a terrible result it showed such weakness… a liverpool side full of injuries always mid table and we couldnt beat them we started off nervous didnt go in to kill…. we should of hammered them we should of smelled blood and went for the jugular and it was the same today… we started poorly didnt go in with that wining mentality not taking advantage of chelseas poor form… we have to start taking advantage of these teams look at the situations their in their an absolute mess… it was the same with southampton we go behind and collapse losing 4-0 with this sort of mentality we will never win the league that i can tell you… The perfect example of this and some of you might not like this but remember the Man United game at old trafford against us when we lost 8-2 we had injuries we had lost players and had players suspended but Man U showed wining mentality they smelled blood knew they were good enough went in and took full advantage and showed no mercy…. thats the kind of mentality we need like it or not

Thumb up 17 Thumb down 9

      • Your right but whats more disappointing is it showed we were weak and how Mertesacker after the game said it was a good point, a good point? Can you imagine the great Arsenal Captains of old such as Tony Adams making a statement like that when playing a mid table team with the most injuries in the league when we are chasing a title… this Arsenal side doesnt have the leadership or the mentality they simply dont have it!

Thumb up 8 Thumb down 12

  34. Time to get pissed now and play angry for the rest of the year. Let’s win this damn thing. If we can stay healthy and get our injured players back it can happen.

Thumb up 15 Thumb down 0

  35. Can’t knock the effort after conceding the goal but upto then wasn’t really good enough.

The most Arsenal of Arsenal performances today for me. Shot ourselves in the foot as only we seem to do in these games.

I thought the next 3 games (in early Jan) would tell me where we were at and 2 points from 9 does not instil me with a great deal of confidence.

Ok, players out haven’t helped but the last minute goal v Liverpool and general performance against quite a poor side plus today leaves me feeling very unsure re our title chances.

    Prove me wrong, please…

Thumb up 9 Thumb down 1

  36. Respect hugely arseblog view and player ratings but – “Ramsey up for it” is a joke.

Ramsey is incompetent and continually putting other players under unnecessary pressure by trying to be flash when simple will do

Thumb up 22 Thumb down 18

  37. I think the hate towards Theo has been ridiculously harsh. We were down to 10 men ffs! No player stood out, with 11 who’s to say he wouldn’t have scored a tap in or a worldy from a quick break. No one will know because the ref fucked the whole game up for us. Yes technically it was a red but the ref can use his own discretion. We see it time and again where challenges that could or would be deemed a red if committed later in a game are dealt with discretely to keep a game flowing and with 11 men per side. We all know Costa’s reaction was ott which should have given Battenberg a clue! A stupid decision by Per but an unnecessary decision by the ref too. We did well to keep it at 0-1 and fought well to get back but every player bar Sanchez (who should have started) was below par and looked tired. As for the hate for Flamini, don’t forget that every home game he’s started this season at home, we have not lost which must have been behind AW’s thinking. The loss seems worse because it was the Chavs but we should move on. We are still in a good position, Leicester WILL drop off towards the spring period so in my mind we’re joint top with rivals Citeh. With players coming back we have to stay positive and push on.

Thumb up 10 Thumb down 17

  38. I think the rarings are a bit harsh on some of the players. Mertesacker deserves a 1, the rest of the team kept on working and created a lot of chances to score at least once, and played actually pretty well considering they were a man down. What did Mertesacker think is another issue, he is totally to blame for the loss and with his experience he shouldn’t be making such stupid challenges. Just really disappointed at him. Still just 3 points off Leicester and even with city so everything is still possible.

Thumb up 7 Thumb down 2

  39. Usual shite from Arsenal every year…get everybody’s hopes up for a real title challenge, and then do enough to fuck it up and hopefully finish fourth. Won’t win the league this year because they’re just not good enough. Played off the park by an average Southampton team, threw 2 points away at Anfield, can’t beat Stoke City FFS and now the perennial double capitulation to Chelsea. Get real Arsenal fans, we are stuck in groundhog day unless the board of directors wake up and do something. I love AW. but it’s time for change!!

Thumb up 21 Thumb down 15

  40. Overall a pretty poor display. Can’t believe we fell into the Costa trap again! I’ve always rejected the Arsenal “lack mental fortitude” critique but it’s hard to deny after this match. Chelsea just seem to have our number.

Thumb up 16 Thumb down 2

  41. Why pay 5-10 million on a player & not bring him on when you obviously need him? Thought it was a gamble worth taking when we are 10 & needed some extra energy, if it worked that would have been a good start if not we were already losing against 11 men who cares if he even gave them 2 more goals.

Thumb up 1 Thumb down 7

  42. Walcott was abysmal today. Has been for weeks. He has no passion for the shirt. Everything bounced off him today. He looks like he simply doesn’t care. At least with the rest, although they may have played poorly, at least they look like they care and actually try. Needs dropped ASAP.

Thumb up 21 Thumb down 3

  43. Walcott and Mertesacker MUST be either sold or dropped.
Özil and Kos must be crying st the ‘what could have been’ if they had different partners to play with.
    Will Wenger do that? No.

Thumb up 8 Thumb down 7

  44. Ox looked good when he came on. I thought we should have kept Campbell on and benched Theo. His consistency has not improved and as a player he is average, let’s face it. Every now and again he will produce a performance which mindfucks you.

Thumb up 17 Thumb down 4

  45. Droping 6 points to this chelsea side tells you why we won’t win the league. We played in the hands of diego costa in both games against chelsea and looked useless in both games.

  46. Ramsey and Flamini v Chelsea

    Tackles made: Ramsey – 21, Flamini – 6
    Tackles Won: Ramsey – 11, Flamini – 1

    Passes attempted: Ramsey – 66, Flamini – 34
    Pass accuracy: Ramsey – 88%, Flamini – 79%

Ramsey made 6 ball recoveries and created 3 scoring chances
Flamini had 3 attempts on goal, the most of any AFC player

Thumb up 15 Thumb down 4

  47. i thought there was contact when costa went down and rolled 10 times . but looking at the replay it didn’t look clear. You could argue the mistake was per not letting costa go against cech one on one and take the risk of conceding a goal.
i don’t think the criticism of theo is unfair. he has never managed an entire season at a level that matches his big contracts or the way they drag out (in the ozil sanchez bracket). without the goals , he’s got very little to contribute.
i’d have subbed him/campbell for gabriel especially with the ox and sanchez on the bench for later if we lacked pace.
i’m biased towards ramsey but i think he did alright today. him n flamini just don’t work as well as coquelin cazorla. his workrate is impressive (not to be confused with headless chicken running), he put in a shift today at both ends of the pitch , just not a lot came off in the attacking third. even if elneny isn’t an out and out defensive midfielder , maybe worth giving him a run with ramsey for the next games.

Thumb up 6 Thumb down 4

  48. Did anyone else found Walcott’s head bit too shiny on TV? Well, that’s all I can remember about him from Second half.

Thumb up 5 Thumb down 2

  49. Walcott given the armband just for completing 10 years at a club?
Embarrassing decision on wenger’s part, I must say
The guy’s hardly covered himself in glory and it’s time he gets dropped

Thumb up 12 Thumb down 3

  50. Ramsey understandably gets a lot of flak for his poor passes and decision making, but at least he was running his socks off and fighting with all he had. You could clearly see that there was nothing left in the tank towards the final 20 minutes of the game. Sure, there are a lot of things that he could improve on, but his performance was far from the worst of the lot.

I love Ozil, but how is it that he escapes without any bit of criticism from that match? He over-dribbled and got barged off the ball numerous times by the scums, made several bad passes and generally nothing came off for him.

Thumb up 5 Thumb down 2

  51. Let’s not throw the baby out with the bath water, in the cold hard light of day; the performance and decision making all over the pitch from most players was well below the standards we know they can reach but we are still in it to win it based solely on our table position rather than our form.
How we address our recent poor form will dictate whether or not we will have the success that is well and truly still within our grasp.

Whether or not we believe that we can win the CL game against Barcelona is just inside 30 Days away. With that being said how can we improve?

There comes a time when old ways must be put to bed especially when they have lead so often to our demise. I know Wenger is keen to let players play and bring out their best talents when comfortable and “Happy” whether or not that is down to his limits tactically one could only speculate as I do not know him personally; the argument has followed him for years however. What I do know and i can say with certainty is that some of our issues are chronic and repetitive but why does it have to remain so.

    I will take a look at a few key things;

Why is it that our faster CB is the one who always wants to play the opposing player offside thus leaving our slower CB exposed?

Why is it our slowest CB plays so high up the park?

Why Is it that our two deep midfielders (flamsey) are a more often than not ahead of their forward counterparts?

Why can’t we play Gabrielle in games where we know from the onset that pace will be used against Per?

Why Can’t we seem to cope with playing 10 Men, I mean Chelsea offered nothing in this game yet did enough to walk out with 3 points.

Why was Walcott left on the pitch or even Joel when our wide play and what Monreal does is best suited for a target man.

Why are we so feeble in the face of the first instance of adversity?

The answers to these are multifaceted and I am not privy to all the details nor does my lofty position on match days allow me greater insight that Blogs or anyone else but what I will say is that our leader in chief, Wenger, has 30 days to answer these questions otherwise our season will fall for naught.

    I really hope not!

Thumb up 5 Thumb down 0

  52. I refuse to be down on the players who worked their arses off while a man down for 70+ minutes. other than per, who totally cocked up, and theo, whose rating was parodic, I’d rate them all higher. They showed guts and steel after Per’s moment of madness. But goddamnit i’m pissed that we pressed the self-destruct button twice against the scum this campaign.

Thumb up 7 Thumb down 0

  53. I thought we did well under the circumstances. Flam’ had that glorious chance at the end of the first half. We fought hard until the end for the equalizer, but I agree with with those on here that mentioned it, Per should have let Costa pass. It looked as maybe the ball would have been far ahead and Cech could have came out and cleared. I want to break this Chelsea hoodoo as well, but I don’t think this game will be THE factor that decides if we end up with the title or not. It’s a tight race, but with Alexis and Coquelin coming back, as well as Wellbeck, I feel pretty confident. Hopefully we get to see our Coq in the FA Cup next week. COYG!!!!

there must be conspiracy behind this

Thumb up 5 Thumb down 4

  55. What are your thoughts on the Costa goal? Was it more of Koscielny’s and Flamini’s responsibility to stop the cross/Costa as they were goal side?

Thumb up 1 Thumb down 1

    • No, Koscielny and Flamini were right to move towards the ball. The error was Gabriel’s, for standing rooted to his spot instead of also moving forward to get between Costa and the goal.

Thumb up 2 Thumb down 1

  56. Per messed up the game. Dreadful error by our captain who panics whenever he’s done for pace. I’m also concerned tat Elneny us not considered better than Flamini..him and Theo stank up the UK.

Thumb up 1 Thumb down 0

  57. Time to admit that the Flamsey pivot has been a failure, and much of that rests on Ramsey, not Flamini as Mat has done a decent job shielding the back 4.

Thumb up 8 Thumb down 3

  58. Theo Walcott – Ironically he was Arsenal’s most creative spark but failed to register any shots at Thibaut Courtois. He was impressive on the ball and recorded 95% pass completion as well as creating three chances and two take ons. Once again, he could have done more but looked lively and would have faired better with Olivier Giroud on the pitch.

Thumb up 3 Thumb down 3

  59. Fair point truj.

No issues with the decision to bench Giroud.Hed have been an out ball but in a11 v 10 likely to have been quite isolated I think and his lack of real pace would have allowed Chelsea to press higher and attack us more.As it was they sat back and we were in the game to the death.

Can’t fault the effort today and if a few balls bouncing around the box at the end would have fallen better we’d have got a deserved draw.

Ozil didn’t have his best game but his effort couldn’t be faulted as he tried to make things happen and his disgust at the end with the outcome showed he is fully committed to the cause.

Shameful at the end when the Chelsea players went to their fans having not tried for most of the season. At least we have integrity and it was good that a lot of our fans stayed to clap the team off at the end for their efforts.

Win v Leicester and Southampton and We will do this.Keep the faith.

ps Why the fuck do refs look up at the card they are holding?

Thumb up 1 Thumb down 1

  60. I had a look at the table today and was shoked to find the Scum are just two points off us. I mean when did this much happen? We were sitting pretty at the top and suddenly we find ourself among such company?

Thumb up 2 Thumb down 0

  61. Theo should be on the bench!!! Line up for next games: Chec, belerin, gab, Kos, nacho, coq, ozil, Ramsey, giroud, Campbell and Sanchez

Thumb up 5 Thumb down 1

  62. Without reading through all the comments to verify I can only assume there’s a shovel full of sarcasm for Theo’s 10 and “majestic” rating. Abysmal showing from someone who should really have kicked in by now. Ramsey did indeed run himself into the ground but soooo many turnovers. Can’t understand taking Giroud off but then I’m not paid to make those calls. Shame on Per. 11 v 11 we’d have won even at 1-0 down, assuming scumsta even scored.

Thumb up 0 Thumb down 1

  63. I have too much irrational and emotional thoughts after this game so I’m just gonna say this: Per fucking Mertesacker cost us the game. Period.

Thumb up 6 Thumb down 1

  64. Who would buy Theo, given his wage expectations and the growing collective realisation that he’s not going to get much better? What’s particularly annoying is that he seems to have adopted a bit of a bratty persona on the pitch, too. I hope we start seeing Campbell, Alexis and Giroud upfront for a run.

Thumb up 7 Thumb down 1

  65. Well this was an accident waiting to happen wasn’t it. Mertesacker was always going to get caught like this sooner or later with his turning circle of the Queen Mary and I am sure I saw a tortoise overtaking him. At least with his eventual ban, we may have a chance for the Gabriel/Koscielny partnership to develop; surely the way for us to go permanently.
The goal I blame on Monreal. He had loads of time to get to the ball before it was crossed in and the goal would never have happened. If we could have kept it 0-0 for longer, who knows what the final score might have been.
Walcott is a complete non-contributor to the team and we virtually had 10 men at the kick-off. His only future I see is come on as a sub late in the game when he seems to make more effort, otherwise move him on while we perhaps could get some reasonable money for him

Thumb up 0 Thumb down 1

  66. It baffles me to see Walcott getting 10 in players rating for the game yesterday. I do not think I saw what others saw or it could be I was watching another game. Walcott was absolutely poor and useless in that game. Words are not even enough to describe Walcott performance in Arsenal shirt. He has never lived up to expectation. I believe if Walcott is from another country, I do not think he would still remain in Arsenal. However, the main problem in the game yesterday was the team selection. Per should not have played that game. The excuse Wenger is giving for the send off is ridiculous. Up til now, Wenger can not figure out how to beat Chelsea…shame on him!!!

Thumb up 0 Thumb down 1

  67. I think everyone is missing the point that Arsenal have not scored against Chelsea in 6 league games home and away. The last time the team scored at home was the 3-1 win in 2010. That is simply terrible if anyone thinks about it. How do you win if you can’t score. Unfair red cards, cheating, penalties, “parking the bus”, poor referee decisions, etc are all lame excuses to wants going on under Wenger. His teams are mentally unprepared to perform at this level and that’s why no matter how many players he brings in, they’ve failed to win the league the last 10 years and counting.

Thumb up 1 Thumb down 1

  68. Forget about it, move on. Freak result that came from one silly mistake. City and Leicester will drop more points this season, there will be chances and we will take them. Decent chance this weekend to give Elneny a run, get Alexis some game time and rest some of the lads.

We’ll be just fine, keep the faith.

  69. Before the sending off, it was clear that we were playing with an attitude of let’s try and get an early goal at home to put pressure on a shaky Chelsea side. The problem is that also left us incredibly exposed in the midfield. Some are defending Ramsey at the expense of Flamini’s shortcomings, but they’ve now played together for 10 or so games. Why is Ramsey still bombarding up the pitch and leaving Flamini to deal with multiple midfielders running at him, game after game, when he knows Flamini cannot deal with that? To me, this is an issue of coaching. It’s not as if Arsene doesn’t see the massive gap that we allowed Chelsea to have in midfield prior to the goal, and many other games prior to this one. So in my mind there are 2 possibilities:

    1. He gives Ramsey the choice as to when he makes runs forwards, and he’s ok with our midfiled being exposed because he thinks with our style and quality we will outscore the opposition
    2. He instructs Ramsey to sit more, but Ramsey does not listen.

Either way, I think we need to look at Arsene before we blame Mert, Flam, Ramsey, Walcott etc.

  70. I see Ramsey, Per, Theo and Flamini are getting all the love from the Gooners after this loss.
Stupid decision from Per; hopefully it’s a one off from him. Thought Theo had some decent touches in 1st half but the offsides were annoying. Didn’t think Flamini was that bad, just wish he took his chances better. And then there’s Ramsey.
Can’t question his effort but he is quite polarizing when things don’t go well for us. It does seem like he lacks positional ducipline and awareness which is a bit worrying. With Coq back soon, hopefully we get some better balance in the middle.

    • In an ideal world we would never have to say “I just wish Flamini had taken his chances better”.

We know Ramsey is a box to box +attacker. It’s Flamini that has no business being there. Instead of highlighting his weaknesses, he should simply be supporting Ramsey’s strengths.
