Bayern Munich 5-1 Arsenal - player ratings

For 45 minutes there was some vague hope. Then Laurent Koscielny went off, Arsenal – almost to a man – collapsed and we shipped another four goals to lose by the same scoreline as we did in 2015, 5-1.

Much as we’d rather not to do it, here’s how the player rated tonight.

Shambolic – his honeymoon period is definitely over. Still young in the life of a centre-half but very poor tonight.

I'm not a Coq-hater but he was pointless tonight. Made two tackles in the heart of midfield. Mesut Ozil made 5 from wherever it was he was supposed to be playing.

      • Knowing AFC we will do a “Milan”.Go 3 up and miss a sitter in the last minute that would put us through.

Can we really have Ozil and Walcott on the pitch at the same time in matches like this?

AW is struggling to get the right team who can be arsed to put in the effort.

Thumb up 18 Thumb down 3

    • Blogs would never give him that. I don’t understand the contempt against people who say he is lazy either. What’s going is he has had a month of producing rubbish and yet he is responding by not even showing any effort. And in return the manager starts him in every single game and never takes him off.
The “something” that is going is that despite playing like he has been he knows he in untouchable. No other decent manager would put up with performances like he had against City or last night.

Thumb up 9 Thumb down 2

    • Surely both the board & the majority shareholder must be into the triple digit negative numbers by now.

Real change is only going to happen when they all go, regardless of who is managing the club. Top down clear out should be a priority.

Thumb up 86 Thumb down 7

    • People are far too quick to write people off. Gibbs has given us over 10 years of service and never moaned or complained. Should be worth something, although i agree Nacho should have started tonight can only assume his is unfit. (unrelated but people should give Wenger a little slack for this result, players to blame tonight not Arsene.)

Thumb up 105 Thumb down 128

      • Mate, if someone’s been in the team for 10 years then writing them off is hardly reactionary. He’s an ok LB, good enough for the Premier League sure, in 13/14 he looked the real deal but a player of his ability shouldn’t be enough for Arsenal Football Club.

Thumb up 111 Thumb down 14

      • If 90% of the players put in rubbish performances in every big game (and some ‘small’ games too), then that’s on the manager.

Thumb up 122 Thumb down 7

      • Player for player arsenal just are not good enough. With the exception of Sanchez and Koz. Maybe an inform Ozil, but when is the last time you could say that. The result is not surprising but typical. Arsenal are capable enough to move out of the group stage and that’s about it. Anyone that thinks that we are in the same class as Bayern is deluding themselves. Maybe we can still push for the FA cup. Under Wenger we will never win the champions league.

Thumb up 21 Thumb down 3

    • No. If the players can be arsed, then we’ll win 3-0 or 4-1. As Arsene will say we’ve turned a corner.

You know what, though. This time there is no saving grace. It is time for him to set him mind attentively to finding suitable replacements and setting up the infrastructure to bring some articulate and knowledgeable debate in the club by former players that actually care about it.

Surely now he must know it is over. As Gunnerblog said, it is palpably observable that even the players don’t believe they will win under him. It is time to leave and to leave well.

Thumb up 34 Thumb down 1

  1. I don’t think it’s about individuals. Nothing has changed since the denilson/silvestre/Gervinho days. I can’t see many PL sides losing in this manner to Bayern – It’s the lack of an ideological plan, a system, a style. We desperately need a proper cunt like Simeone and then I feel we could win leagues with this
squad. The evidence is there that it is not about individuals. These players aren’t even given specific instruction. That comes from the manager and until he goes, nothing changes.

Would you rather we won the FA cup, unsure about Arsene’s future, or go out to Sutton, for him to announce his retirement after? I’m the fucking latter at this stage, but genuinely interested what you think.

Thumb up 23 Thumb down 12

  2. Does people still think isnt time for a change in this team already? be pro wenger or anti wenger, idc, but just we need something new, is the same over and over again, we not moving forwards but going backwards, with the best team we’ve had we’re still clueless, gutless, tactically inept and mentally weak.

And i dont mean a change for the sake of changing, Either with Arsene on the helm or without him SOMETHING HAS TO CHANGE. Enough is Enough. Sometimes isnt even about “winning trophys”, is just about SHOWING MORE AMBITION

Thumb up 177 Thumb down 1

    • I think Walcott, Ramsey and Gibbs need to go.

Walcott is good but not a first choice for a title challenging side.

      Monreal nèeds real competitio

Thumb up 94 Thumb down 13

      • The only players that can walk away today with his head held high are Ospina and Kos (we were holding them off good until he came off), the rest i dont think are as shit as some people think, is just that we more often than not, lack a game plan, or never “train” (or at least seems so) different tactics (or tactics at all). Is just the same, time after time. I agree some players need to go, to make place for new, hungrier and better players.

Thumb up 90 Thumb down 2

        • Spot On. Wengerball was worked out by other managers years ago. AW never changes and never prepares any other game plan.
Time for AW to go, and most of the board and Kroenke. The problem is all these people want their easy money from the club and won’t give it up.

Thumb up 8 Thumb down 1

        • This is very true. Unfortunately, I don’t think our players are trained on the mental side or tactical side much. As soon as our goal went in, Neuer’s head didn’t drop. He was not just whining and throwing his arms up either. He was protesting the lack of focus(it seemed like that atleast) and talking to his teammates.

The first goal was classic Guardiola. Overload one wing with three players(lahm robben and someone else, pardon me I can’t remember about who the players are). Lahm and the other guy make runs, occupy the full back and winger. Old bald turd Robben gets a clear sight on goal, albeit from range. I don’t think the tactic or the fact that robben likes to cut in and hit a long range curler into the far corner are news to any tactician, but we didn’t look prepared for it. Ozil could’ve put pressure on Robben.

In the first half, Lewandowski had a free header on goal that he couldn’t hit the target with. That should’ve been the cue for our coaches to warn our backline about contesting crosses better and being aware of movement. I hope it happened and player error caused the goal. Mustafi was still just about to jump when the ball was like almost to him, almost a free header again.

It was clear that bayern was looking to move players into spaces that open up when one of our midfielders would come up to press high. It was usually Xhaka/coquelin. As soon as they move forward, someone else would make a run into that little pocket of space. How do we counter this? I’m not an expert but wherever that bayern player is making a run from, he must’ve been marked by someone else. That someone should track back realizing his teammate is pressing and leaving space open. Ozil won the ball back a few times when an opponent was being slow in possession, but he doesn’t do the other part i just mentioned.

Also, because of this movement into space, both coquelin and oxlade chamberlain played much deeper than they should’ve been in the first half. Bayern didn’t have much pressure until they entered the last third. It tells me we’ve not been prepared well tactically.

Thumb up 15 Thumb down 0

    • We have a decent squad but sadly the same story time and time again, I was a Wenger fan but it seems that every year we are predictable and poor I am no longer surprised as it seems that ‘some’ players just don’t turn up, Sanchez presses every game and looks around to see nobody with him, who is telling him what to do because nobody is on the same planet.

Thumb up 5 Thumb down 1

  3. Despite what blogs says, Ozil IS lazy. And overrated. And mentally weak.
I think his ratings are spot on today, though. Ozil did not deserve a 1. Definitely deserved a 3 though.
We should sell him to China while he can. I’m sure he would thrive in the less physical and less competitive Chinese league where he could show off his ‘technical ability’ (yawn) and make plenty of dosh.
PS the rest of the team are overrated too, as is our ‘squad depth’

Thumb up 93 Thumb down 58

    • If you really believe that about Ozil, then presumably you’d be fine with him doing a Van Persie and going to Utd next season as well, confident that he’ll be lazy and useless. Hmmm.

He’s badly off form, but at the same time he has a free role at Arsenal. He’s not in the team to tackle, criticise him for not doing what he *is* in the team for. He got 18 Prem assists last season ffs, you don’t go from that to overrated and lazy in 2 months.

Hazard was unbelievably shit last season, meanwhile Ozil nearly broke the PL assist record.

Thumb up 75 Thumb down 15

      • Hi Vino, I’d love to know if there are any stats that tell us the opposition he got his assists against, and the manner of assists.

        I’m specifically looking for

How his stats look like against the other top 5 teams in the PL (chelsea, city, liverpool, spurs, united)

How many of his assists are from dead-ball situations. This takes nothing away from his skill, but its pretty obvious ozil can’t keep the ball under physical/tight pressing which is a very important thing in the PL.

Thumb up 20 Thumb down 34

    • its wengers job to understand the kind of player hes buying. Ozil cannot play the way fabregas did for arsenal, or say the way a modric plays. They are different midfielders. I think ozil is another player who enjoys cazorla’s presence because he gives him a solid base. I really dont understand the lazy or coward narrative. Watch ozil in previous teams. Nothing has changed about him. Put him in a team with vidal and alcantara behind, through balls be flying all around the place

Thumb up 8 Thumb down 5

  4. This team/squad/club is so obviously in need of new direction.
Yes Bayern may well be the better team, but we were hopeless bar 10-20mins in the entire game.
Notch this up as another embarrassment. We’re one of the supposed big clubs in world football but we’re a laughing stock.
I hate to be reductive, but the players need a rocket up their @rse!
Some fans fear change, but surely we deserve more than this. It’s the SAME story EVERY season.
I don’t want to see Wenger destroyed like this, but he has to make the right decision for the club and walk away.

Thumb up 139 Thumb down 1

  5. No player came out of that game with any credibility with the sole exception of Koscielny who gets a pass solely for getting injured before the collapse. Everyone at the club looks drained. The players are not trying and the one leader in the squad, Alexis, will no doubt be off in summer and who could blame him. Responsibility lies with manager for not walking years ago when his decline wasn’t as evident, and the board for offering him a new contract. Sad state of affairs.

Thumb up 52 Thumb down 2

  6. Been saying it for years. Ozil is the definition of a fair weather player . Our best player against ludograts and the like . One of the worst against big teams

Thumb up 74 Thumb down 17

  7. Ozil is fucking lazy and will never win a 50-50 tackle as he’ll always cower out of it. He’ll never pressure a defender as he NEVER EVER sprints on the press, always jogs but the stats will say he covered the same distance. Ditto Theo which is even more criminal considering his pace.

Watching Arsenal play is so fucking painful these days, even when we win games I can’t see our identity, our tactics, what is our formation does anyone even know?

I see Sanchez pressing high then looking round in bewilderment at his team mates 50 metres downfield who seem to not know whether to sit or press. WTF? It’s so obvious. It’s so embarrassing. It’s baffling.

Wenger’s lost it and it’s so fucking sad to see, I wish he’d gone out on a high after the last FA Cup win, I really do.

Thumb up 139 Thumb down 18

    • Mesut outackled everyone of our midfielders tonight. He was playing in a free role up front where he played for Germany. We played a 4 man midfield. The job of those midfielders was to disrupt Bayern and get the ball to Ozil quickly to orchestrate the counter. The midfield failed dismally and Mesut dropped back and made 5 tackles at 80%. That’s far better than Coquelin managed. But hey, let’s blame Ozil because he’s a soft target and just ‘walks’ around the field magically finding himself in pockets of space because he’s ‘lazy’ lucky and all those high km run stats and tonight’s high tackle numbers are illusion.

Thumb up 31 Thumb down 10

      • It’s not just the tackles though it’s the space he should be occupying in front of the Bayern midfield. Because he doesn’t run those couple of yards and let’s Vidal and Alonso forward unchallenged, it forced one of Xhaka or (usually Coqulein) to press from very deep. By the time they’re even close, Bayern have easily bypass that and swarmed the space left in behind, looking for Robben or Lewandoswski. It’s not just tackles, it’s positioning and pressure

Thumb up 8 Thumb down 1

        • If I was Mesut Ozil, convinced to come to Arsenal on the basis of a certain plan for where the team was going, and then four years into it found myself in a midfield surrounded by the same crappy group of players like Ox, Walcott, Iwobi, Ramsey, I would also be upset.

Thumb up 8 Thumb down 2

          • And yet that’s not an excuse to stop working for the team, nor does that excuse his inflexibility. After all, Ox, Iwobi and Ramsey are mostly played in unsuitable positions and formations because of Ozil. Away to Bayern I’d rather play those 3 plus Walcott in a tight 4-3-3 than have a no.10 sauntering around the pitch in a “free role”. A lot has been made of the 5 tackles he made but seeing as Bayern had 75% possession I’d say that’s not a lot, even if it was more than others. So Ozil might be upset by the players around him but he should be thinking “how many other top teams in Europe would change their formation to the detriment of at least 3 other players just to have me at no.10?”.

Thumb up 1 Thumb down 2

    • The stats don’t tell the entire story. It might say that he runs but, have you noticed when Ozil starts running?
Only after the 50/50 ball has been captured by opponent and has been passed on. After the ball goes away in fair distance, then he starts pretending as if he’s running. I’ve been watching him on recent games.
He’s not nicking his living… Neil Ashton is wrong…
      He’s a fraudster!!!

Thumb up 26 Thumb down 51

    • The formation was yet another tactical change from Wenger who is trying to find balance and form from his team but has failed with this change too. It was Nominally a 4-4-2 but more a 4-5-1 with Sanchez dropping into midfield and allowing Ozil to find space as the furthest player forward. It obviously changed once we were 3-1 down and he made changes. Against Chelsea we started in a 4-3-3 with Ozil fwd on left. Against Hull it was the 4-2-3-1.

Thumb up 1 Thumb down 0

    • Indeed the structure of the team in big games is hard to define. We started off seatibg deep (which just doesn’t seem to suit us at all), then towards the end of the half we seem to have stumbled on the press an found a way back into the game (albeit with a controversial penalty and three bites at the cherry for Alexis before it went in). Second half starts and am not sure whether we were pressing or sitting back. Look back and you’ll notice the same pattern in most-if-not-all the big games we’ve played. When you go three-one down away against a superior opponent, I was expecting the manager to prowl the touchline and just hammer damage limitation into those boys. Instead he remained hunkered on his seat and we became a wreck. It’s such basics that I found most annoying last night.

Thumb up 5 Thumb down 0

  8. Wow! Cannot believe this season. I think it’s best we finish fifth in the league because my heart is going to fail at this rate. 5 1 is flattering though. FML.

Thumb up 1 Thumb down 1

    • Exactly my thoughts, our midfiled was overunned an we got to half time with great result knowing bayern will put us with big preassure and knowing our mentality sub ozil put elneny park the bus run the time put monreal 60min instead of ozil double the flank do the same 80min with the rigt flank even they won they woul won it by one goal whic will be great result to start at the emirares.

Murinho would done those changes simeone woul done the alegri also, wenger is believing too much in the players tought the goal would lift us sn we could score another and we did the same opposite collapsed.

Thumb up 30 Thumb down 1

    • Right? Away goal, keep it tight, get ten men behind the ball, take it back to the Emirates.

Somehow, I doubt they spend much time on this in training. Or on any tactical adjustment to different in-game scenarios.

Thumb up 5 Thumb down 0

  9. To whoever it may concern,

Tonight the franchise I support was heavily beaten by another franchise from somewhere in Germany. As such, I wish to withdraw my interest from all of my franchise’s future activity until further notice.

To be honest, this has been coming long before tonight. After many years of supporting my chosen franchise through peaks and troughs, I want to be clear this was not an easy decision. Over time, I have had to remind myself how silly I was, being so emotionally invested in a plc which clearly had no interest in even acknowledging my existence as a fan. How silly I was to invest time and money into a pursuit in which I had no control. Yet, week after week, I was there. Those two hours where I could watch the franchise I was born into, kick a ball along a perfectly manicured lawn was escapism for me. Escapism from reality, and I bore the crest with pride, even in the lowest moments.

For these precious moments I want to issue some thankyous. Firstly to the upper level suits of this franchise. Your years of lies, deceit and utter contempt for those who pay your wages have led me to make this rational decision, and I thank you for showing me the light.

Secondly, I thank the players. I have long bemoaned the entitlement of ‘millenials’, however you take entitlement to a new level. I thank you for showing me that our sense of reality operate in two completely different parallels, and that I have absolutely nothing in common with you or your attention craving ways. I thank you for teaching me important lessons, such as looking at you and learning what I don’t want to become. I hope your entitled, spoilt ways and brittle, weak, acceptance of failure leads me to many successes in life.

Thirdly, I thank a section of the fans, and of course the so-called, expert pundits. Your one dimensional views and sensationalist opinions have taught me to think more clearly, with an open mind. They have taught me to look beyond my own nose and form ideas with context and substance.

Fourthly, I wish to thank Mr. Wenger. I thank you for many years of happiness, for always seeking perfection, and for maintaining class with intelligence and dignity. I also thank you for showing how an ego can destroy all good sentiment in a fraction. I thank you for not acknowledging your own flaws and limitations for the thing you supposedly love, and peddling on regardless, in blind faith. For I will surely not repeat the same mistakes.

Finally, I wish to thank football. For showing shameless, pig-headed greed and corruption. For destroying the game I, and so many of us love. For sacrificing something beautiful for money. For desecrating my two hours a week of escapism, I thank you. For this is a lesson I will surely pass on to my children.

In truth, I write this post with a feeling of numbness and resentment. Sentiments of loss, and sadness. Many will question the fortitude of my support, and so be it. I know what I felt, and I know what I have given. Sometimes even I have to concede that hoping time and again the inevitable won’t happen, can eventually become unhealthy.

    Yours sincerely,
    Your biggest fan.

Thumb up 18 Thumb down 8

    • Very eloquent, mister.

Were you watching during the end times of Terry Neill and Don Howe? They were pretty bad.

Thumb up 1 Thumb down 0

  10. This is going to be an overly dramatic comparison.

As an American, one of the worst feelings about the Trump situation is feeling completely helpless about anything improving. Despite a great deal of public outcry, it seems he can just make up whatever narrative to fit whatever he wants. Even when he does something completely, shockingly, unbelievably horrible, he’s still the president. So many have no faith this administration has a chance to get better. I’m devastated at what has become of my country.

We’re only watching a game, but it kind of feels the same with Arsenal. No matter how many years we put on embarrassing horror shows and title challenges, I have no faith this organization is going to improve. It’s live. die. repeat. The manager is tactically lost and can’t motivate his players. The players either aren’t good enough or can’t be arsed to give a shit. And nothing changes. The board seems lost or incompetent. I’m devastated at what has happened to my team. We have the resources and fan base to be world class.

I never get this angry about Arsenal, but today did it for me. Like with Trump, the worst part about it all is the feeling that I can’t do a single thing to enact change.

Thumb up 77 Thumb down 39

  11. You know the worst is Wenger’s failed team building has wasted a lot of money on overrated players, and now we are stuck with a squad of deadwoods again, bar 1-2 players. I’m confident we can still salvage something from the likes of Mustafi and Xhaka, since they are young but I hope we have enough money for the next manager to rebuild.

Thumb up 38 Thumb down 9

  12. ‘It was obvious ages ago that he is a player who has plateaued and needs to move on. Tonight was more evidence of that.’ Same could be said of Chamberlain and Walcott. And if you swap the word ‘player’ for the word ‘manager’ it would be just as true for Wenger.

Thumb up 54 Thumb down 5

    • Arguably not chamberlain in that list. He’s younger, has more ability than Theo(bar finishing) and Gibbo so I’d say he deserves chances.

Thumb up 12 Thumb down 5

  13. I really hope that this is the last time we need to lose in such embarassing fashion for the club to realise they need to make some serious changes

    • Whoa, don’t go blaming the fans. At least some of them actually showed up in Munich. Didn’t see anyone else from the club show up bar from perhaps Koz, Ospina, & possibly the kit man.

You do also realise that for the last 3 games, the player that has been given the most pressure by the fans going into the game has also put in the best shift on the pitch? (eg: Ox & Ospina). Just food for thought.

Thumb up 30 Thumb down 4

    • If you support a club you want whats best for it. Don’t go and try and put down other fans loyalty and support because they think change is in the best interests of the club, this is a football team not an Arsene Wenger tribute, not supporting Wenger is not he same as not supporting the club. Yeah we lost to Bayern and theres no shame in that as they’re a good team, but the manner of it and predictability of it married with the repetitive failures in the last however many seasons is what causes the bitterness. Why should Bayern be so much better than us? Also, as for saying ‘christ its a game of football’ whats the point in having any interest in it if you’re not going to invest any emotion in it? Thats why people love the game.

Thumb up 43 Thumb down 2

  15. Think Ospina is under rated, & everyone else vastly over rated in their scores.

Do feel a bit bad for the Ox to be honest though, as he probably would have scored higher if it hadn’t been for that shocker.

Can someone explain to me why he was the last man playing out from the back when that happened? Sorry, but had completely switched off at that stage & missed what lead up to it. Still, the Ox, playing last man out from the back? FFS.

Thumb up 38 Thumb down 4

    • That reflex save Ospina did with his wrist (basically off the line) was amazing!! Here in the US it certainly didn’t get the credit it deserved. If anyone else had done that anywhere they would have been gushing about it being “world class”.

Thank you David for keeping the score down to just an ambarrasing 5 – 1.

  16. In premier league matches wenger shuts up shop with both Gibbs and monreal playing on the left ( around 70 minute mark why not today at half time isobi wasn’t playing well, few good passes to Sanchez aside, should have played that tonight . against robben. Elneny in for coq. Why doesn’t Xhaka play long passes or balls over the top like he did at start of season, pace was ,/ is bayerns weakness at back with no boatang.

Thumb up 8 Thumb down 1

  17. Credit to Bayern for annihilating us twice in a row. We couldn’t beat Sunderland by 4 goals twice in a row.

Why can’t we buckle down and defend?

  18. If the Burnley boss were in charge, the team could ,I repeat could, put up with more of a fight.
This defeat shows the fm has to go.Year in and year out the same thing is happening.Of course some clubs will be happy to lick the boots of the qualifying teams but don’t forget Arsenal are a premium club. Its 5th/7th richest in ws.
There is no guarantee anew boss will win every game or most games but I do know the defence will be in better shape.
So as we come to spring the perennial stat of qualifying for the cl comes to mind. Dot be surprised thegunners finish 5th or below. That will be the final nail in the coffin.

Thumb up 18 Thumb down 1

  19. The fact that BFG is the club captain speaks volumes, last year was it not Arteta?
Are those inspirational guys?………….one a guy with ZERO caps for Spain, the other a bloody snail in terms of speed, yet our genius of a manager thinks they should be captain, after the joke of captain Fabregas?………..

Thumb up 2 Thumb down 9

  20. We play parts of the game like we are down to six players. Too many luxuries out there.

If we are going to keep a luxury player like Ozil on the field, then we can’t afford several more luxuries that are less talented as well.

I love Arsenal and always will. And I love Arsene, and always will. But the club is more important and it’s time to move on.

Thumb up 3 Thumb down 0

  21. Barcelona: God that was awful last night, nobody could possibly put in a worse first leg performance than that

    Arsenal: Hold my beer.
    My goodness 😀😀.

  22. WENGER it’s time to wake up and clear out the dead wood and admit some players haven’t shown their potential and are just not good enough to play in this team. Also Sanchez is not a team player. Instead of trying to get the glory and score, instead of running sidewaysacross the goal with the ball to try and hit a shot, only to be muscled out, he should pass it. Tonight it seemed we were in awe of Bayern, giving them space instead of closing down and putting tackles in. Against a team like Bayern, we needed men not boys! Our prima donas should start grafting and earn what they are paid. Why is Steve Bould not giving better advice to our defenders, he was one after all. There is something not right and it needs to be sorted out. Why do we have more injuries than most other teams?

Thumb up 5 Thumb down 0

  23. this is no longer frustrating seeing this year in year out , it’s just become really boring now
I’m at the point of acceptance of our mediocrity that until wenger fucks off we will see the same performance trends same times every year

Thumb up 1 Thumb down 0

  24. I miss Hillwood! Wenger is doing his job but I think at the moment it is more than he can handle, his basically also the Chairman!!! No one is giving him the backing he needs!! Tactical wise 0/10 we are too stiff and predictable. Him leaving without proper transition will send this club into free fall. All the fare weather fans and the media will move on. If you love Arsenal FC support a smooth transition if not all will be really lost! Trust in what has got you so far

Thumb up 0 Thumb down 2

  25. Its Wenger’s fault that he is good enough to lead Arsenal to top 4 finish, and the consequent income influx from CL, but not good enough to win games in the knock-out stages or the crunch/important matches in the EPL. The board (Stan Kroenke) is happy from financial perspective and is not arsed about what winning matches and trophy actually means. Wins, trophies are for fans, and obviously, there is a conflict of interest.

Thumb up 11 Thumb down 2

  26. I do genuinely feel for wenger no matter what players or how much he spends his teams away have this kind of performance in them, I feel for him because all he knows is Arsenal and he can’t let go. The poor man keeps trying to drag his teams forward but it’s the same results in the games that really matter, I wish he could find the strength to tell us all he will leave at the end of the season, then we could all unite behind him and see him of in the right way, he looked so old and maybe a bit ashamed in his interview but it’s his own players letting him down And it’s been like this for many years. For his own sake and the club’s it’s time for him to retire even if he manages to win a trophy, and keep his sanity and dignity intact.

Thumb up 32 Thumb down 5

    • For all the talk of players letting him down, he’s just as much at fault for letting the players down by sending them without proper tactics and preparation.

To go to Bayern with the same 4-2-3-1witj Ozil doing his usual disappearing act with no game plan was just stupid. Even Bayern, big as they are, had a game plan to attack our weaker left side.

Thumb up 16 Thumb down 2

  27. Sorry, can’t muster the enthusiasm to vote. After the faux controversy of Wenger playing Ospina; he turned out to be the only one who turned up! Don’t understand why Gibbs started ahead of Monreal and surely it’s obvious to anyone who cares that Gabriel is simply not good enough for this team. Beyond that, I’ve been convinced for some time that there is some serious discord among this squad which is manifest in these repeatedly listless and half-hearted performances.

I’ve never been a Wenger-outer but it’s evident that some serious moves have to be taken to get this club back on track. But, like others, I worry that the board has no plan in place for succession. Maybe best-case scenario is Wenger signing a one-year extension to enable a smooth transfer of power and the reorganisation of the club that would have to accompany it?

Thumb up 2 Thumb down 2

  28. It makes me sad to say but. As a team we were very poor. I went into this game with no expectation and I was still disapointed. At no point otnight did ANY player show any of us that they happy, proud, and willing to fight for the shirt they wore. I know venting on here means nothing but tonight showed me that we are willing to just roll over at any point and give up. I challenge any onlooker to show me a single second we pressed as a team, the ref tonight was incredibly fair and lenient and bayern as per did roll around and dive but we gave them so much opportunity, without ever ACTUALLY putting a challenge in it was laughabke after the 60min. Sad to say, we have become the joke of Europe, as bias and shitty as the media is. We Give Them The Ammo.

  29. Groundhog Day again. Likely a few more “wenger out” converts after this tactical debacle. My wenger out moment was last season vs Southampton, a 4-0 hammering.
The grass isn’t always greener…at this point who cares. Wenger out.

Thumb up 4 Thumb down 0

  30. This is pretty heart breaking. I do feel its Wenger’s last season. Its a shame that this is how it will end. Whether you are wenger in or wenger out, the players are not good enough at the moment. Wenger at the very least deserves to leave at the end of the season. Fans should respect the man and voice their opinion another time. Too much negativity right now. Although i know its hard to be positive.

  32. It was a total shit performance from us we literally set back and let bayern walk all over us , we did not take the game to them we are better than this , we played really crappy hardluck to Ox , Sanchez was lucky with the rebound , Hummels is food in their defence we did not explore their weakness , we played Bayer many times before oh gosh robbed does always cut back on his left to score , we were bullied today cuz we let them Arsenal was friggin bad today there was no one who took control on the field today after Kos got injured steups Ospina tried , the entire Arsenal board need to open their friggin eyes , still love Arsenal but the board is to friggin stingy and Ozil needs to open his eyes some more we have blasted backbone

Thumb up 2 Thumb down 0

  33. The simple fact is that for this system of Wenger’s to work, players need to own up and take responsibility.
They consistently fail to do so.
Arguably the manager’s philosophy doesn’t cut it in this day and age, possibly because players aren’t what they once were – I.e they are mollycoddled from a young age in youth teams and given everything on a plate.

I didn’t even watch this match but I had a feeling this would happen. This ‘soft centre’ is, in my opinion, partially the managers fault, he should be walking in at half time of games and telling players to stop being p*****s and grow up, but he seems to be too bothered by how they’ll take it.
Additionally, as much as I hate slating players in the public forum, he should be doing that, if the performances warrant it.

Don’t want Wenger to go, but I see little chance of anything else happening now. If I was in his shoes I would be totally humiliated at being let down, yet again, by players he consistently stands up for

Why do these players never talk to each other? Every single time we’re down and out, they shut up and look around at each other, in the expectation that the others will do something. It’s such a joke, as if half of them can’t even be bothered and need motivating. Why do people need motivating if they’re on 5-6 figures a week?
    Do bankers need motivating?
    Do coaches need motivating?
Do doctors need motivating every day of their lives?
    No.
These children need to grow up and stop being protected by the manager.
He needs to be brutally honest with them, and tell them they will be sold, for peanuts, if they refuse to grow up.

Sorry for the rant. I’m drunk and pissed off at this consistent bollocks.

Thumb up 15 Thumb down 5

  34. Why can’t Wenger put out a team that knows how to park the bus? For once, forget the beautiful football, and defend like your life depends on it.
Why no change in tactics, ever? At half time today, we are 1-1. Change the shape of the team to hold onto that precious score. Is it arrogance, or stupidity, to keep thinking there is only one way to play?

Thumb up 12 Thumb down 0

    • I seem to remember comments that it was the players – rather than Wenger – who decided to play defensively and counter attack at Manc in the cup a couple of years ago. That game aside, we just refuse to plan anything for what the opponents will be doing. This is pure arrogance by AW in saying that he will let them worry about us.

This mental block worked when he was ahead of the game but now everyone has caught up it’s just embarrassing. We’ve yet to visit Scousers, Spuds and with Manc coming soon too, our league position is under threat if he continues that way.

Thumb up 3 Thumb down 0

  35. I dont believe changing manager solves everything, it seems all the ppl in the club works like someone from hierarchied out of fashion corporation. Better not sell Ramsey cuz I will lose face if he goes to other team and plays well. Better not buy expensive player to avoid risk of undeperformance…such a corporate attitude(salary man)

Thumb up 5 Thumb down 8

  36. 1) I am now convinced that the presence of Wenger makes it more difficult to sign players all things being equal. There are simply too many managers out there who are better
    2) we are absolutely the joke club that everyone accuses us of being. We live out every single narrative placed upon us
    3) what do you guys like Welbeck, Elneny and Lucas have to do to get a start?!
    5) guys like Gibbs and Coq would not get anywhere near the starting lineup any of the other top six clubs
    6) Sanchez is absolutely gone the summer and I’d be quite inclined decide to sell Ozil at this point

Thumb up 26 Thumb down 4

    • Disagree about pint one / it was wenger who spoke to Sanchez and ozil yo bring them here . With Sanchez us over Liverpool because wenger spoke to him for hours in spainish.

Coq not playing well as he is the one pressing when the best game I have seen him play was against Man City away 2-0. When he sat in front of defence and on David silva shadow. Elneny should play and do the press , as if he wins the ball on the press he can forward pass and shot better than coq. Imo’

Thumb up 4 Thumb down 0

  37. We always find a way to be the worst…Barca get crushed 4-0 nil…no worries Arsenal will go one better and get hammered 5..Just for shits and giggles.

If anything should tell you about tonight…After 9 mins it was clear Lahm/Robben were having a field day and would continue to do so..I like Iwobi but playing against two veteran and world class footballers he looked like a boy lost and he contributed to Gibbs having a shocker. Its not like we did not have one of the hardest working wide forwards on the bench, who also would have contributed to our counter attack abilities and also happens to be a great outlet in general. But there sat Welbeck…

Thumb up 7 Thumb down 0

  38. Usual us! Every one expected arsenal to loose and we humbled their thoughts very well,Am one of those Arsene’s loyal fans but I think he needs to be fair to us he should not accept new deal for the sake of his love to arsenal, because it widely known that he can’t take this team forward we hate being hurt like yesterday

Thumb up 7 Thumb down 0

  39. Arsenal is not Bayern tho we aspire to be on that level. Sure we hang with them for a spell, but to maintain that over 90 minutes or at home AND away…too much to ask. Tbh we probably overachieve given what we have 1 thru 11. At what position were Arsenal superiror to Bayern? I’ll wait. This is why it would have been such an achievement to progress to the next round.

Thumb up 2 Thumb down 5

  40. Nailed it in the prologue blogs, the second Kos left the pitch everyone shit their pants and did a Gallas inside.

Gave Kos a 9 for holding the rest of the bed wetters together for as long as he did. All those who recently armchair analysed him and said he’s overrated, educate yourselves and watch this match over and over.

Beside Kos out leaving us with 2 CB’s obviously playing in different matches, we got run over in midfield. Again. Should have played Elneny ahead of Coq, and need to get a genuine quality replacement for Santi to pair up with Xhaka.

FFS we might have been in better shape putting Mert on for Kos – at least he can fucking organize a defense and everybody knows to compensate for the speed issue.

Thumb up 15 Thumb down 2

  41. Another failed team selection!
Where the he’ll is Danny Welbz and Perez.
Why do we continue to play badly out of form players…ie Coquelin, Ozil, Mustafi?

I would sit Ozil and play Holding for the rest of the season…..maybe Mustafi is actually shit and Koshielny has been covering up for him.

One thing is for sure Wenger.is predictably pathetic.

Thumb up 11 Thumb down 11

  42. The definition of insanity or stupidity is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results…..sound familiar.

Thumb up 6 Thumb down 4

  43. Ozil is such a cowardly player. Barely worth the contract he is on now, let alone a fat new one. His massive transfer fee was a huge waste of money. Strolling around the pitch like he couldn’t give a shit, the coward.

Thumb up 13 Thumb down 6

  44. In an echo of many of the comments here I have always held great loyalty and admiration to arsene. However the best thing for both club and arsene is for him not to be offered a new deal/privately withdraw it and then dress it up as a mutual decision if it isn’t. That said, many of the players don’t deserve their wage for the season independent of what the manager is instructing them or not – remember Chelski players leading themselves to victory with di Matteo in charge?

I do feel however we should not resort to abusing wenger – this is a man who has deep affection for the club to the point of blindness. The players should realise this now and shape up for the rest of the season to let the man go with some dignity intact. I’d agree with comments based around a lack of hunger and guile – eboue, senderos and flamini managed a run to the champions league final with some discipline and pure desire. Don’t see any of that in the current crop except for possibly 3 or 4 in the whole squad.

Thumb up 5 Thumb down 1

  45. His performance was poor tonight but I don’t at all agree with the Ozil bashing. I used to be one of his biggest critics. Someone playing that far forward for an attacking side like Arsenal should be scoring 15 – 20 a season. Then he started scoring goals and I thought, ok, he’s a good player.

He’s playing like shit now but that is not because he is a shit player. It is because he is playing at a fucked up dysfunctional football club. Ozil is the canary in the coalmine. The sensitive sort that detects the toxic gas before the others. It started for him back in December. He knows something is very wrong at Arsenal and he can’t just act like everything is OK. All the players feel some of what Ozil feels, that’s why they are all playing like shit. Ozil just feels it more.

There is so much angst at Arsenal. So much unspoken simmering bullshit. Anyone that has worked in a fucked up work environment with a clueless CEO and a supervisor that doesn’t know what he’s doing knows exactly what it’s like. It’s awful. Completely unbearable. You dread going to work in the morning and when you leave at the end of the day you are exhausted even though you didn’t really get anything done because the whole office is paralyzed. It’s extremely destructive. Performances tank. Moral plummets. All that is needed is effective leadership. Someone to take action, to make the necessary adjustments, or at the very least, to ACKNOWLEDGE THE FUCKING PROBLEM. But at Arsenal not even that simple step can happen because everyone’s head is in the sand.

Thumb up 22 Thumb down 2

  46. Gutless performance.

Special mention for Iwobi who is so overrated it’s not even funny anymore. Sanchez turns the ball over in traffic quite enough, we don’t need someone just as bad out there. Speaking of, it’s really quite pathetic if he’s our next best penalty option after Giroud. He’s bloody awful at them.

And I’m sorry, but why has Monreal been dumped? Is he injured? If not, it makes no sense. Gibbs hasn’t exactly set the wing back spot alight.

For better or for worse, this is going to unravel really fast. I love Wenger and I don’t know why he bothers anymore. Let someone else get the flack. Enjoy your sunset.

Thumb up 3 Thumb down 0

  47. Believe me, I don’t know what to say. I’ve never seen such a dismal performance from an arsenal team, not even the previous 5:1 drubbing was so bad. yes, Barcelona was thrashed 4:0 by PSG the other night, but they put up some resistance. this arsenal team was a disgrace, I couldn’t believe what I was watching. who would tell me what else needs to happen before Wenger could summon up courage and finally decide to leave.

Thumb up 1 Thumb down 0

    • Comment: I am in support of change in the Arsenal coaching set up.I was so disappointed that I verily believed that BURNLEY would have done better. I think it is said that the the best time to leave is when the ovation is loudest.

Thumb up 0 Thumb down 0

  48. This result plus our continued inconsistent performances equal a scream for help. Add that to letting our two highest profile signings being allowed to run down to the last 18 months of their contracts says it all – the players that, let’s face it, have put in a pretty decent shift since coming to the club. They want to win trophies, not finish 4th and get past the CL group stages.

We’re doomed if something doesn’t change. Simple as that.

Thumb up 2 Thumb down 0

  49. 1 Ospina : he is poor with crosses so we should have prevented them from coming in by closing down early. Alas. Can’t say Cech would have done much better with the turgid defending ahead.

2 Bellerin : he did OK considering he was doubled up by both Costa and Alaba. I mentioned he needed help.

3 Mustafi: latest to be branded as mediocre. Could have done better again st Lewandowski but honestly that cross should never have come in in the first place. Did decent but overwhelmed when Koscielny went off.

4 Koscielny: How fragile is our confidence when we collapsed as soon as he had to leave. Hope it isn’t serious because we need to recover very quickly. As bad as this was, it could get far worse. Think Sutton or worse Spurs.

5 Gibbs : Appaling. Not sure what the fuss on Mustafi is when Gibbs is so poor. We were raped on the left time and again. Not sure why Montreal wasn’t played but to lose out to two older players in Lahm and Robben…we need to find the next left back this summer. Their first second and last goal all from the left.

6 Granit: well at least he only performed one red card potential tackle the midfield was too rigid. passive defense resembling a fussball table for them to run amok. Too timid.

7 Coquelin :another whose performances have been sub par. Principally I think he tried to sit flat across with Granit where we may have been better served with him carrying a bit higher up denying their miss who had a field day bc we sat so deep waiting instead of taking active defense. Gaffers fault bc he played us too careful and worried about positioning.

8 Ozil : wad he on? Just not the fellow to dig you out of a hole. again I mention he needed to be aggressive and shoot like he meant it. Two tame shots one from free kick and other on the break in first half
If he leaves, I think he is a luxury and we may be better served with someone who has a bit more belief.

9 Ox : tried hard. Didn’t think it wrong he started a bit wide. Made the mistake for their last goal but at that point…

10 Iwobi : again poor choice by Wenger. Why throw an inexperience player into the fray? He’s good but this may damage him. Liijed completely lost.should have started Welbeck. We’ve been here before.

11 Alexis. I fear he is going this summer. In truth can’t begrudge him. He is making super human effort. His teammates just don’t understand. Tried to get them to press in concert but they sat back instead like lambs.

We were fortunate for the penalty and he made a bit of a hash but he never gave up and got the goal. Oh for one more player of his ilk.

12 Gabriel : I’ve said it before he is culpable. Would have preferred Metersecker. How gullible to get sold the back heel for Thiago’s goal.

13 Walcott : what was Wenger thinking if at all. as per usual slow with subs to bear influence on the game when they went ahead with their second goal. Should have put Welbeck on for Iwobi then. Instead we get Walcott who for a player of his age and supposed experience brought nothing to bear. Why wenger persist with his English experiment is beyond me. They lack guile. Would prefer Mahrez.

14 giroud: bring him on but don’t provide sufficient crosses.

Gaffer : I think this could be it. Looks loss and frankly unable to break through his own glass ceiling.

Its not that we are a bad team. we have a good team bereft of sufficient midfield(sans Santi, Elneny is a poor choice to have to have as back up, Ramsey uninspired)

We are a good team when we belief we are but we have not been a great team for a long while.

Past his prime. Its a matter of time now.

Lets hope we still finish the season with something(FA cup) but its scant consolation and surely cannot be enough anymore.

Thumb up 5 Thumb down 10

  50. Most predictable things in football:
    1. Robben shooting with his left boot (probably the most left footed player)
    2. Arsenal going out of the champions league knockout, that too in embarrassing fashion.

I mean for, would the likes of burnley, or everton or any mid table club lose in such fashion. Ok, granted that any team can lose a game, that bayern are a geeat side with world class players all over the field, that there ia no shame in losing to great teams. But, the manner in which arsenal collapse and just give up is shocking yet not surprising.

  51. I feel like shit. Still. Every Cunt & their dog laughing at us because we played dead right to the script and the fucking narrative. Yep, it’s February. Fuck me and fuck you!
Apparently Lucas had a hamstring problem, but why Danny wasn’t used at all, fuck knows. Where is the real Mesut Ozil? Will Elnenny now finally get a run in the side over Coq? Did Valencia do one on us with Mustaphi? Please insert Captain Per back into the lineup ASAP. Please give Alexis’ agent whatever amount he wants. It’s going to be hard to get him to commit long term. This is as low as it has been during the Wenger years. The 8-2 mauling was with a kiddie line up and we still had the majority of the season to turn things around, which we did to an extent. The only way this gets worse is if Man Uropa pip us to our 4th place trophy. Stay positive fellow Gooners. But it’s fucking hard sometimes.

  52. Said this months ago ,ozil and wenger have to go,did anyone see ozil last night when robben got the ball for the first goal,he was as close as coq to him,he just stopped his usual jog and stood still watching, god dam it we paid 42 million for him,we would have got kante from Leicester for that …if all are fit he will have to play players who will give everything for rest of season..wellbeck..perez..mert..ospina.., I knew last night when he picked ozil behind the striker it was all over we should had a 3 man midfield ..xalai..ox..elney …..

  54. Wenger reminds of the Nokia! 15 years ago they were innovative, their products were reliable and were the dominant force in the mobile phone industry! But then refused to change their technology and now Samsung and Apple are more dominant. You are sentimental about your Nokia 3310 but you just can’t beat a smartphone! Our Manager has clearly lost his mojo…its quite sad. Either his tactics are just not to the standards of the current game or his players just have no clue on how to implement his strategy effectively. Either way we are fucked.. Top 4 also looks like a real challenge this season at this rate. Love the team but we have a real problem

Thumb up 6 Thumb down 0

  55. iwobi has become such a disappointment – he seems to have learned all the wrongs things from Theo i.e. how to stand around waiting for an attacking pass, with no thought to tracking back or work effort. From about 10 mins in last night, I made a point of watching him closely and the lad just does NOT make any effort to win the ball back… less than 5 tackle attempts the entire evening and NONE in the first half!
Four of their goals came through his left flank channel and, whilst Gibbs was not great, he was left completely on his own to deal with Robben as Iwobi just couldn’t be bothered to track back.
How Arsene thinks that he can afford to have both Ozil and Iwobi on the pitch and a team that attack like Bayern is beyond me – we simply cannot afford to have not one but TWO defensive holes against a team like that: small wonder the mids completely dominated us, and that Lahm had all the time in the world to springboard Robben up the left.

  56. The real problem is that the club is totally unprepared for the time after the one man show called Wenger that has been going on in twenty years. I fear it will be a lot worse if he leaves this summer. And yet still I hope he does so this process can get started

  57. I rather think that Mesut Özil wants away from The Emirates this summer. It seems to me that he’s made a calculation that Arsenal isn’t going to give him the things he wants from his football, i.e. trophies and glory. He seems to be deeply unhappy with what is happening around him.

I wonder if Alexis Sanchez is thinking the same too? It wouldn’t surprise me. He is of a different mindset to Özil and I can’t see him not trying to make things happen, but he must also be looking at La Liga or Serie A and thinking that there are clubs where he would flourish.

The sad reality is that Arsenal, as a club, is not good enough to win the Champions League, or even the EPL. This saddens me hugely, but every year the same things happen.

  58. Hindsight being 20/20, wouldn’t it have made more sense to start Welbeck and Perez on the wings? Neither Ox or Iwobi are known for their defensive abilities and both look far too overmatched from the starting whistle. Welbeck’s work rate and ability to track back would have been far more helpful to either Gibbs or Bellerin, who were pretty much left alone all night. Safe to say a veteran like Perez would not have been intimated either. Man, that was frustrating. Also, is Monreal injured? Why on earth was Gibbs given the start? Would have been really nice to see Elneny get some run as well. Lastly, another wasted season for Ramsey. Time to blow it up I think…..

  59. I personally don’t think that AW leaving is the silver bullet for AFC.

I think our problems are much more to do with the guys on the pitch who, for whatever mental/physical/technical reason, just aren’t good enough for Champions League football.

There’s way too much dead wood in this team. If Arsene goes in the following months, I think he should take the majority of this team with him.

Seriously, how many of last night’s AFC squad would have actually been picked to play for Bayern last night? Alexis – Yes, Ospina – maybe… but who else…? I cant name one.

I’m questioning my £1600 season ticket, and £100 return rail fares from Leeds on matchdays, which breaks my heart.

  60. Over the past 12/13 years the players have come and gone but one thing has remained constant, Arsene Wenger. Over those years we have won the FA Cup, which was a wonderful achievement but year after year we have fallen short in the PL and CL. The common denominator is AW. He has been a wonderful servant to our club but last night and the game against Chelsea, were an utter shambles and it left me hanging my head in disbelief. The eyes of the world were on us last night and we were once again a total shambles, unable to keep the ball and constantly giving it back to Bayern, often just kicking it anywhere. I did something last night that I have never done before. With 10 minutes to go, I couldn’t take anymore and switched the TV off. I was ashamed of our performance and ashamed of our manager and players. Things have to change, I couldn’t face another two years of this absolute torment.

    • Actually if you are talking about Wenger shouldn’t you be basing your opinion over his entire tenure.

Otherwise that means i can have an opinion about you as a person just based on this one post.

Who cares what u did before the last 30seconds/20yrs right?

  61. What has to happen for Welbeck and Elneny to get their opportunities? I know Welbeck isn’t back to full fitness yet, but only way he can get there and help us out is to play. If I were Elneny I wouldn’t be able to contain my frustration at having to continually play behind Coquelin with the displays he’s been giving.

  62. That’s me done as far as Arsenal are concerned, I’ve supported them through ‘thick and thin’ since 1971 but I’m not watching another game (Oh, c’mon Sutton on Monday perhaps) until this board goes. They’re obviously more interested in profit than success. I don’t even blame Wenger, I feel sorry for him as he’s being directed by the board.

As for the players. If Coq doesn’t know to do anything to stop Robben turning in from the wing for the first goal, then there’s no hope – everyone else knew he was going to do that! Where’s the intelligence to our players that the likes of Pires, Bergkamp, Henry, Rosicky, Vieira etc. used to exhibit in abundance? Ozil is lazy and lightweight and Sanchez is now clearly pissed off with the mediocrity that surrounds him.

I’m concentrating on the Rugby Six Nations for now, better sportsmen and true entertainment!

  63. It was like there is a key that you can use on arsenal and it just opens up.

Felt like it was all too easy a gameplan from bayern.

Honestly thing Ramsey and Xhaka midfield would have bossed it tonight. But thats football.

Blame game is easy, in reality we don’t have the quality of player to support our ambitions.

And as was suggested (imo very accurately), that the board settle for what is safe financially. And that trickles down to the players we buy in.

It isnt fast enough. Too much looking what we can do internally to improve, but not enough checking who is overtaking us whilst we still in second gear.

The key that unlocked us is basically an unbalanced squad when the best eleven are not all available.

That meant bayern and the rest can simply make our worst passers at the back pump long balls to some of the shortest forwards in the league.

Also the contract situation should have been sorted by now. Of wenger, ozil and alexis. It affects things that, when there is uncertainty in the three people who can make or break the clubs fortunes over the next two years, ie the duration of your contract before it is up for negotation. Bit of a downer that. Quelle surprise.

  65. I see a lack of confident in this team. I. E. When Alexis calling midfield player to press and nobody move on. Ox nervously stucked deep waiting for Costa. Captain Koz, great at tackling, but not pushing the team upfront. Etc.

  66. Thing is, on paper, we shouldn’t be having these results. In 2016, Arsenal was the 5th most valuable football team in the world, behind Real Madrid, Barca, Man Utd, and Bayern. So if we have the money, and the revenue, and the fan base, and the stadium, and the infrastructure – then the fault lies with the players and the coach.

    We deserve better.

  67. Last night Arsenal were outplayed by a team that has a huge resemblance to how arsenal used to be. An athletic, physically imposing team with great technical ability, clinical in front of goal with a mental toughness & winning attitude.

This generation of Arsenal players will be remembered as mentally weak failures without the technical ability to play the arsenal way.

Gibbs, Monreal, Gabriel, bfg, coquelin, Ramsey, Giroud, Walcott are not good enough to play for a team challenging for the league nevermind the champions league.

Jury is still out on mustafi, xhaka, elneny, wilshere, wellbeck & lucas but the signs don’t look good.

Not much of the squad left I know. Kos, sanchez, bellerin, carzola & ozil (if we have better players to do his defensive work).

Ox & Iwobi are still young enough to improve but should be considered squad players.
