Arteta wants transfer market aggression

Mikel Arteta says it’s about time Arsenal showed more aggression in the transfer market.

With only Yaya Sanogo signed this summer (for free), Arsenal fans have yet to see the spending power promised by Ivan Gazidis at the end of last season.

And Arteta, the club’s on-field captain, reckons the club now need to put their money where their mouth is. Speaking from Vietnam, where the Gunners will face the national side on Wednesday, he said, “The club have said they are going to be very ambitious in the market and have got the financial resources to get big players.

“I think it’s about time. When you compare us to other top English clubs and the money they have paid, we are very far apart.

The value of this club is the class and what it means is very difficult to match. Now, financially, they are very strong so maybe we will be more aggressive in the transfer market. I am excited. They made it public that they are going to go big. The sort of players they have been linked with makes me happy.

“Big signings create a good atmosphere and we need to do something because other teams are doing it and I think we will.”

You won’t find any Arsenal fans arguing with the Lego-haired Spaniard over those comments – even the players want the squad to be strengthened. It makes the team more competitive and, as Arteta says, creates a good atmosphere.

With the news that Liverpool turned down Arsenal’s bid for Luis Suarez, perhaps there’s more indication of the kind of targets we have, even if the idea of signing the Uruguayan is proving hugely divisive amongst fans.

And when one of the senior players at the club is urging the club to spend, they’d do well to listen.
Then act.

The first 3 words of the title had me worried there for a second…

Couldn’t agree more with what he has to say.

c-bus

Had the same reaction. Freaked me right the fuck out.

Its also very good to see a respected player such as Arteta echo what the fans want

frrrred

I like my women like I do artetas eyebrows…THICK!

When this man speaks, you listen and nod in agreement. How is he not captain again?

A N Other

So do we Mikel, so do we.

jason

Wilshere following Higuain on twitter and Arteta speaking about big signings.

The players are no different from the fans they want signings to and i personally think a goal keeper, Williams, a CDM and a striker will see us win a trophy.

Now i dont mind if we dont sign them all as long as we sign 2 good players im fine with that as long as we are showing intent and now just saying we will sign just to get season tickets sold.

Talk is cheap

Goonerific

I hear talk is Wengers next target!

Rictastic

Talk is coming for free during this transfer window 🙂

Bunburyist

As a signing-on bonus, Suarez will eat Nicklas Bendtner.

I like that the club is thinking of creative ways to get deadwood off the wages. Suarez would almost pay for himself!

Aamir

It was “about time” 3 years ago according to Alex Fynn. In 2010 with our revenues boosted by property sales, we had at the time, the highest revenue of any football club. Big chance, not taken by Wenger.

Aamir

Before I get 100 more thumbs down, I am an ardent supporter of Arsene Wenger. The reason he didn’t spend that summer was because he believed the team would be successful in 10-11 and we didn’t have the guarantee of sponsorship money that we do now. But ask anyone who knows about our accounts, we have had money since 2010. I wish Arsene had gambled a little more back then. There’s no way we would have collapsed like a Leeds United just by overspending in one single summer.

CountLeaf

didn’t we have e.g. a huge stadium debt to pay off at the time?

ANS

I don’t see your point Mr Leaf. We are still paying off our stadium debt and will be for years.

TomJ

Yes it’s a 30 year mortgage is it not? Is the interest paid off yet?

Matthew

Cesc, Fellaini & Higuain please.

frrrred

I’ll have whats he’s having too thanks…

ken

YES! YES! YES!

Indiagooner

Its nice to note that in the three names you took, the only first name you used was cesc’s. would love to have him back.class player and seems like a fan too.

Harish P

I don’t know why people settle for players like Williams when we tout that we want money spent big. If we have big money, we should spend it big and go hard for a world class defender, a strong NEED for many, many years. I’m liking what we’re linked with otherwise, such as Cesar between the posts, Bender in DM, and Higuain up front. Great positions that would go far with that kind of quality. I’m genuinely stunned that no first team players are signed yet. Gladly the weather is amazing right now, keeps my mind off the transfer nonsense,… Read more »

I dont think we just need to sign a forward, defensive mid and a centre back. But also a creative offensive player. Attack could get a little stale at the end of last season, and its a bit dangerous to always rely on santi (or jack) to provide the spark consistently throughout the season.

mrarsenal3

Guess you forgot about Rosicky, eh?

GunnerJake

He can’t play all season. As much as i love him, he doesn’t really get a look in till the end of the season

Andy Mack

So 3 creatives in Santi, Jack and Rosicky aren’t enough….
OK there’s no such thing as enough when it comes to quality, but 3 is sufficient.
More would be nice but unnecessary.

Andy Mack

And Lego man is another creative!

TexasGooner6

We need a striker and a defensive mid. If Miquel can play as the 4th cb than we are good. If possible I would bring Cesc back!

Arseblood

Our new signings should be on the Asian Tour right now! Pull your fingers out!

KidKnockout

Joel Campbell has got his work permit and was highly rated by Marca, where do you see him playing next season? Could he take Gervinho’s place?

Gooner1980

If they sign Suarez I think I would end my 33 year support of Arsenal. The guy is scum. Please sign Higuin instead.

Highbury Shuffle

The fact you say they instead of we, speaks volumes.

Matt

I sort of agree with that, but at the same time, I know why he said it when it comes to this signing. This just doesn’t seem like something “we” would do. If it happens, I’ll feel like it’s something they did, not something we did. I really hope that we’re doing this just force Real’s hand because they won’t sell us the player we actually want. If we buy Higuain, then we won’t try to buy Suarez, so there will be no bidding war and they’ll be able to get him cheaper. I don’t think it’s a very clever… Read more »

Arsene wenger needs to forget about trying to build players and buy real quality player.every year we see teams like city.united.chelsea.get all the quality players and wenger waits till the deadline day to try and sign average or unknown players.this is really killing the. Club.and it really hurts as an arsenal fan to see other clubs get all the silverware and arsenal keep struggling every year to make champions league .spurs are showing more aggression in the transfer market then arsenal do.arsenal has one problem and that’s arsene wenger he waits till the last hours to sign players and that… Read more »

Higuain, Cesc, Capoue, Williams, Cesar. No excuses.

Blah, blah, blah.. Just reveal your secret hairproduct already! 😀

Afeez Mikail

Arsene we need.. A goalkeeper, Williams, Felliani, fabregas and Gonzalo

Afeez Mikail

Gedion Zelalem has a great talent…..

Masiya

we Always fall for the same Wenger & Gazidis trick…sell season tickets first, sell players, then buying virtually unknown footballers on last hour of transfer deadline (some straight from home squillachi chamack) on the back of promises to spend.. Wenger shouldn’t sign his contract till he shows ambition even tho I love the boss but we need to create history…

CountLeaf

gee. our most recent transfers include Mert, Poldi, Santi and Monreal, and some of them were bought early in the transfer window last year. virtually unknown my ass.

GreenGooner

Cesc pleaseeeeeeeeeeeeeeee

Manzi

Here’s what I think will happen this transfer window, by positions needed: ST: Joel Campbell just got he’s work permit and with Sanogo in the 1st team squad and Wenger convinced of his potential and a proven goalscorer in Podolski, in his second season, to provide backup for Giroud who the coach believes will definitely improve on 17g 12a from last season. Throw in Walcott who’s got goals in him and we don’t end up signing a striker. CM (6,8): We dip into the youth setup to provide invaluable 1st team experience to a couple of youngsters (not older than… Read more »

Ninad Kuchekar

I can understand your frustration, but I am sure what you said is not the case.

Manzi

I hope it’s not the case. We need a CM of equal quality to Arteta and ST seamlessly rotate with Giroud.

SoqedHozi

I’d love us to sign Higuian, Cesc, Gonalons and Adler. I just can’t see those last 2 coming off. Any 4th choice mertesacker-esque CB would be good too but I couldn’t name one (miquel?)

Ninad Kuchekar

I am fed up with silly TV programs over weekends..I don’t care if we sign anyone, I don’t care if we don’t. I swear I will even watch those “Cardiff vs Crystal Palace” kind of matches….but for heaven’s sake, please start some football already!

Indonesian Gooner

If cesc goes to utd without us doing anything despite having that buy back clause, then wenger/ivan/thedick should all be thrown inside a 50 m deep well and be fed dying rats and have people shit into the well everyday until cesc’s career is over.

Highbury Shuffle

Woah

Dr Baptiste

I would just like to point out that if Cesc says no to going back to us, then the buy-back clause is null and void.

While i don’t want us to sign Suarez and would greatly prefer Higuain, i am at least forced to admit that he IS the caliber of footballer that we should be targeting, as a human being he is deplorable, but he does at least have enough talent. Our other targets (rumors or otherwise) of Lars Bender Fellani are exactly the players we need, for 1 thing if we sign fellani there is 1 less big guy waiting to snap wilshere if nothing else.

XMarksTheCoq

When I saw the title of the article, all I could think of was Arteta holding a Berretta, wearing one of Tony Montana’s best suits, chomping a fat cigar, and in a deadly accent that would make Banderas proud, saying “I want transfer market aggression, and what I want to know is….which one of you punks is gonna give it to me?”

Speaking of transers- just thinking about the Fabregas to Man U story- don’t we have the right of first refusal ?

Matt

Apparently we do, but you have to remember it’s dependent on Fabregas wanting to come to us. As I understand it, we have an agreement that says if Fabregas ever wants to return to Arsenal, we can buy him back for something like £25m (think it might be a bit less). So it doesn’t mean we can block a transfer to somewhere else. If he wants to go to Man United, then he’ll go there and we can’t do anything about it.

Matt

But don’t worry, because he doesn’t want to join them. He’s a key player at Barca and loves it there, he’s said it time and time again. I don’t know where all this stuff about him being a bit-part player has come from. He started more games than any other outfield player for them last season. Including Messi.

The reason Suarez wants to leave in the first place is because he is fed up with the english refs. How will that change by coming to us,1. and also to continue the point that he is carrying a ban which he would still have to serve, which is no use to us as we have spurs in our 3rd fixture and not having our big new signing would be terrible. I also thing that Higuain is a better striker anyway and would much prefer to see him in the prem, he is not as wasteful for a start, and… Read more »
