Lightning strikes twice as Mavididi is sidelined by hamstring woe again

11

In January 2017, Stephy Mavididi went on loan to Charlton Athletic, and after impressing initially, had his season ended with a hamstring injury.

It was so bad that it required surgery to fix it, and it was a real blow to the development of the highly rated young striker.

Back in August he joined Preston North End on loan, it didn’t go as well as planned, and last month that deal was cut short so he could join Charlton for a second spell.

Again he impressed early on, scoring the winner on his first appearance as the Addicks beat Oldham 1-0, and two weeks later made a 3-1 win over Walsall safe with an 89th minute strike.

Sadly though, lightning appears to have struck twice, as he’ll now miss a prolonged period with another hamstring strain.

In a statement on their website, Charlton said:

The injury is the same side as the one he had last season, however, it is in a different place and not a repeat of the same injury. He has seen a specialist this week and the rehabilitation will be slightly more prolonged due to his previous injury and at this stage the tentative timescale has been set at around eight weeks.

Our medical team are currently in close liaison with the medical team at Arsenal regarding his treatment and rehabilitation.

What a blow for him, fingers crossed he can recover quickly enough to play some part in what remains of the season.

So sad. Whole careers depend on stuff like this. It could be curtains for the fella.

At least it isn’t the same part of the hamstring, lets hope the part that had surgery isn’t causing other parts of his hammy to rupture

Poor kid. I hope it isn’t a case of the Afobes (very poorly timed injury) for him.

Get well soon, son. Best wishes on a speedy recovery.

Charlton basically admitted they overplayed him when he got the first injury, and this is a big disappointment as he was playing well again for them. How many loans are actually beneficial to our young players? It’s really difficult to bring young players through to first team football but the loan system just doesn’t seem to be well thought out. He’s 19 years old, surely it’s better to keep him in the under 23s until his body is stronger?
