Wenger likes playing striker Welbeck as a striker

55

Arsene Wenger says that he prefers to play striker Danny Welbeck as a striker and says the striker’s best position is probably as a striker.

The England international, who was signed as a striker from Manchester United, looks set to play as a striker in the Europa League clash with Swedish side Ostersund tomorrow because fellow strikers Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Alexandre Lacazette can’t play as strikers because they are cup-tied and injured respectively.

The Gunners might have had other options to play striker but they sold three strikers last month to other sides who needed strikers.

Facing the media in Sweden ahead of tomorrow’s game, Wenger said: “[Playing as a central striker] is where I prefer him personally and it is where I believe that he has an opportunity to do well.

“He had to wait a little bit to get back in the team but that gave him time to work on his fitness and from what I have seen today he is sharper than [for] a long time. He looks very sharp.”

Shit happens, this is football. Welbeck has an amazing opportunity these next two games to prove to the manager what he can do. A fully fit and motivated Welbeck will be a headache for any defence, regardless to if he can be clinical or not. His work rate was immense in the fa cup final last season and I wanna see a bit more of that.

Equally, if he doesn’t perform, that may give someone like Eddie the platform to shine. Excited to see how we’ll go about this tie, the snow and the pitch looks like it’s gonna be an interesting game.

A loss against them would be as bad as England’s exit from the euros by Iceland. This fixture has giant killing written all over it, if were not up for it there will be an upset. We have the league cup final 3 days after the second leg, we have to get the job done in the first leg so we can rest some players before the game against city.

To be fair he always turns up for England when played CF. His whole career he’s been shunted out wide, excited to see him get a shot.

He’ll score a perfect hattrick. Thigh, ass, back of the neck.

No, it is his turn to try as a left back.

Seems not to be popular a view but I agree. I’m jaded with this. And I love arsenal and I am not going anywhere. But seriously jaded. I’m sure lots of people can understand the emotion even if they disagree with the assessment.

A goal every 4 to 5 games, regardless of the club he played for. Would love it if he can disprove the doubters, which is just about all of us.

Though his England scoring record is 15 in 36 so a lot better. Hope he can bring that form to his Arsenal career.

Gio
Gio

Yes, his finishing is not up to scratch, but the goal ratio is also partly due to him being played out wide a lot. Even for United, he rarely started up front.

I seem to remember a year or two ago when Giroud was injured and Welbeck was given a run of games up front, he didn’t look bad at all. If I recall correctly he ended up getting injured himself soon after though and hasn’t had a proper run up front since.

I think we’d all love Welbeck to play like a striker.

I’m not sure how I feel about Arsenal playing a player in their preferred position. Seems a touch out of character, and I’m a traditions man myself.

I feel you, but these are desperate times. If you have to play somebody in their preferred position, you have suck it up and just do it.

He’s all we got and I for one hope he has a great game playing in his best position and scores a classic of his back side! We’re gonna need him for an option now so good luck to him. Coyg

Anyone think Arsenal will do the same to this Swedish side tomorrow?
(I don’t. Hope so. But I don’t think so.)

Time was when we would look forward to going past the likes of Porto where instead we now fret over getting a result from the likes of an Ostersund.

“Don’t mind being out of CL for the Europa” they said. LOL.

Welbeck to be fair to him has been played out wide in recent season(s)

He needs to be more central but we also (like Giroud) have to take advantage of his strengths. We need to be a little more direct and not try to pick our way through the eye of the needle all the time.

Alas this teamlacks creative/wide players with pace now. So much so that we need the fullbacks to make the difference. Which creates its on set of problems. BOTH Monreal and Bellerin have been caught too high up.

The opponents know we will press them and they sit deep covering the middle where the likes of Ozil, Mhkitaryan, Jack, Ramsey tend to gravitate to.

As a result we shuffle sideways. They will take us on the break exploiting the area behind the fullbacks when we commit high up.

There fore it is essential to get the right team balance.

I feel without Koscielny, we should revert to back 3 even against Ostersund.

Mustafi flanked by Monreal (for experience) and Chambers means we have two players who are familiar with fullback role who can watch the space vacated when our fullbacks (Kolasinac and Bellerin) push forward.

I would like to sit Mhki slightly deeper next to Granit to take turns with Ozil (on right) in attacking the box but also use his experience to know when to drop and help the Swiss cover.

Granit and Elneny is a poor combination neither can turn with the ball which means effectively the ball goes back into our defense and we are under pressure.

If I had to choose between the two (hard choice one is mediocre the other flawed), I’d take the Swiss only because we are going 3 at the back and would benefit from a bit more forward intent.

The other player I’d include is the physically strong and energetic Iwobi. With Jack likely out, he is the only other player that can dribble at players and insitigate things. Like Mhiki, he has free roam with Ozil behind the striker (Welbeck) but needs to watch the space behind the fullbacks.

So –

…………………………………..Welbeck……………………………………….
……………….Iwobi………………………………..Ozil………………………..
Kolasinac………………………………………………………………….Bellerin
……………………………Granit……….Mhki…………………………………..
…………..Monreal……………………………….Chambers…………………..
…………………………………..Mustafi…………………………………………
…………………………………..Ospina…………………………………………

Exactly 2 years ago I believe Welbz came off the bench and scored that awesome late winning goal against Leicester City. He can score goals… we must believe and get behind the team! #COYG

When a manger has only one 1st team player available to play the next game as CF, he’s got to say that player is good in that position.
He’d be an idiot to say anything else.

Am I right in thinking that the other British players in the squad at the time had a rather large influence on Wenger deciding to sign Welbeck?

Gervinho looks like Messi compared to Wellz and he would have to have been one of the clumsiest strikers we ever had.

Play two up front and stop offsetting for the fact we have a shit midfield. Actually get a Dembele when you have the chance. How about that?

Fabian Delph played LB for City Tuesday. He´s a CM. Danilo, RB, came on and played as a CDM to shore things up. I could name many others. Modern football needs new ideas and approaches and locking players to one position is old fashioned.

In the Name of Bergkamp 3:16

Let’s be honest. For all his faults, Chamakh was more prolific than Welbeck will ever be and that’s saying much. All well and good being a nice guy but football is a business and goals are the currency a striker is judged by; Welbeck is a poor fit for us.
