Unai Emery held his first Arsenal press conference, speaking ahead of Saturday’s friendly with Boreham Wood FC.

Here’s what he had to say on a range of topics. His English is perfect yet, but it’s definitely improved since his announcement.

Have to say I’m impressed with Emery so far. He’s obviously passionate about what he does, excited for the season now, COYG!

And completely unphased in front of the media. No nerve or sweat. I liked the fact that he asked for translations on few of the sensitive questions about Wenger or player that belongs to different clubs (Nzonzi). Shows he looks for clarity before answeing.

Leno (Cech)

Bellerin (Lichtsteiner) Sokratis (Mavropanos) Söyüncü (Chambers) Monreal (Kolasinac)

Torreira (Guendouzi)

Xhaka (Elneny) Ramsey (Maitland-Niles)

Özil (Iwobi)

Mkhitaryan (Nelson)

Aubameyang (Lacazette)

Would sell Welbeck and Mustafi and bring in Söyüncü for that money and then I’d play with a 4-4-1-1 – diamond.
I think it would bring the best out of all of our players. Torreira is the perfect guy to iron out the defensive problems we had when we only played with Rambo and Xhaka in the middle. Additionally it would also make Özil better as he would have one more player behind him so he could concentrate more on his offensive game, too. Ramsey could still make his runs from deep but wouldn’t leave a hole with it thanks to Torreira. Mkhitaryan as someone who plays between the lines, sometimes as a second striker, sometimes as a second number 10, sometimes maybe even from deeper switching positions with Rambo. And with Auba we have the striker up front who would always have at least 2 defenders attached to him in order to open that spaces for Micky, Rambo and maybe even Özil if Emery can teach him how to shoot a bit more often.
It would certainly require a lot of work from our full backs as we would play without real wingers but all of them have offensive qualities and quite a good engine and with Rambo, Micky, Laca and Auba there are also a lot of players who will appear on the wing in certain moments.
Also we could adjust this system against especially strong or weak opposition just by playing different players in certain positions but without changing the whole system.
Against weak opposition we could for example play Xhaka on the 6, Ramsey and Micky on the 8 and Lacazette as a second striker.
Against strong opposition we could play with Torreira, Xhaka and Elneny/AMN and then Rambo on the 10 and Özil maybe as joker.

Am i the only one who thinks Unai speaks like a nerd? He’s trying so hard and i love it.. he deserves a lot of credit!

I am excited! Also this world cup may end up helping us in the end.
Spu*s will be the biggest loser…since they will have 9 players out. All first teamers. Hopefully most of them will lose motivation after not winning the cup (only Lloris has a chance).
Chelsea just sacked their manager today. They wont have Hazard, Courtois, Kante, Cahil until much later.
This is a great opportunity for us to quickly come out of the block and get ahead before the other teams get going.
COYG!

I’m not sure they will ever have hazard again, but we will see.

Spot on.

And use that momentum from a good start to carry us through to the new year while others are playing catch up.

But maybe, without having even played our first pre season match, we shouldn’t get too far ahead of ourselves!

I wasn’t sure about this guy initially, but he’s really impressed me since he took over as Head Coach.
I think the club is in safe hands…

I suppose we shouldn’t count our chickens yet but we seem to be handling it much better than Utd did.

Is it just me or can anyone else see Emery having similar mannerisms to our Santi Cazola

If only he could have press conferences with Santi beside him. 🙁

Obviously behind Emery and everything, but I really miss Arsene. It is difficult to accept he is not at Arsenal anymore. This will be one very odd season.

I miss his candid opinions about the wider world of football at press conferences, which can be dull affairs.

I think not. This could be a very good season. and if it turns out so, we’ll have no mind to miss the old regime.

His English is a lot better than just two months ago. Feels like he’s really worked at it to make so much progress in such a short time.
